(London, England: Public Auction No. 48) A specialized 363-Lot public auction featuring the ‘Aurelius’ Collection of Great Britain King Edward VII Postage Stamps: Part I The ‘Aurelius’ collection is stated to be the finest collection of KEVII postage stamps to have been offered at auction for many years. The collection incls a powerful group of Proofs, particularly Trial Colors, and an extensive holding of mint multiples of the 1-1⁄2d. to 1/- values. Examination of auction catalogues from previous decades during the lotting procedures for this sale revealed the rarity of the 1-1⁄2d, 2d, 4d, and 7d Trial Color Proofs. The groups contained in the ‘Aurelius’ collection are possibly the most extensive ever assembled in private hands. Famous collections such as those formed by Colonel Bates, Per Gjerding, Major Beaumont, Joseph Silkin, M.H. Stothert and Tommy Allen contain but a few examples, with only the H.C.V. Adams collection, sold in 1956, included a comparable section. Many of the large multiples offered emanate from the collection formed by Cecil Shaw. The plating of many of these was done by comparing marginal markings of complete sheet skeletons held in the Brotherton collection at Leeds University.
