    Hi Friends!

It's indeed a pleasure for me to write President's Column on behalf of ANANDADHARA.

I still remember the day in 2014, when in a small outlet in JP Nagar, I saw a poster (half torn) with a title “ANANDADHARA” and luckily, surviving at the edge of the poster a ten digit mobile number.I came to Bangalore in 2007,but till 2014, I felt nothing could be better than to celebrate Durga Puja in our own city,Kolkata. But in 2014, I was proved wrong. I dialed that ten digit mobile no and was asked to come to an address. When I reached there, I met a group of people (hardly 10 ) of different ages but having a common dream, with full of energy to do something for the society and build an association to enjoy every festival of the Bengali culture, share each other's problem and promise to help each other in a different city away from their native place. Yes, I am talking about ANANDADHARA, a team of 10 members of 2014 , have grown up to 70odd members along with their family and many more to join.

ANADADHARA is a non profitable socio cultural trust, based in JP Nagar, was formed on 15thAugust 2012, a very special day for all of us,with a vision to serve the society through socio cultural activities and to connect with people irrespective of caste and community, to build a culture where every people lives in harmony in this cosmopolitan city of Bangalore. As a socio cultural Organization, ANADADHARA always stands for humanity, participated in several fundraisingprogramme to support victims and their families affected by natural calamities, participated in Walkathon against corruption.

Along with other socio cultural events ANANDADHARA organizesDurga Puja, Laxmi puja,Kali Puja Saraswati Puja, PoilaBaishak ( Bengali new year), Makar Sankranti and Holi. This gives a platform to hundreds of people to take part in those festivals and enjoy every moment and connect with each other.

This year DurgaPuja at ANANDADHARA will be held from 26th of Sept to 30th September. A special attraction of this year Durga puja is a Flea Market.Apart from this there are Cultural programmesand various events organized by Puja committee. It therefore gives me immense pleasure, to invite you all, to Sixth year Durga Puja celebration 2017 organized by ANANDADHARA.

In this occasion a souvenir “Anandam” is being published by souvenir committee. We are grateful to the contributors as well as advertisersto come forward and support our venture to make it a success. I alsocongratulate thesouvenir committee for their great effort to publish this souvenir on time.

Let us pray to Goddess Durga to shower blessings on all of us and may this festival brings happiness, peace and prosperity to all.Wish you all a happy DurgaPuja & happy Dushera

    From the Editor's desk…

As summer fades to fall the spirit of fesvity takes over and there is a special feeling that Durga Puja is round the

corner! There is a gradual build-up over next three-four months as we discuss the events, onboard our

sponsors, plan our cultural events and have endless meengs to chalkout the finest details. The Durga proma,

theme-based pandals, lights, decoraon, music and food - help to celebrate this auspicious event in style and

grandeur. Shopping knows no limits - clothes, jewellery, books, and even home décor. It is me for the family to

    get together and share.

This year, we are celebrang the sixth edion of Durga Puja at Anandadhara in associaon with J P Nagar

Cultural and Welfare Associaon. On this occasion, let me present Anandam, the annual souvenir

ofAnandadhara. The word “souvenir” which has a French origin literally means amemento or keepsake that

makes us cherish a place or special event. In Sanskrit, the mother of all languages, Anandam, means “bliss”.

This mullingual souvenir is truly blissful as it's a plaorm for creave expression of art, culture and joy. The

arcles, poems, painng and sketches in the souvenir are a reflecon of creators' imaginaon, emoon and

above all have a spontaneity of their own.As the write-ups are in different languages, it is a great example of

cross cultural and linguisc assimilaon of thoughts that will appeal to a wider secon of the society.

In this edion of Anandam, you will get to know more about Yoga from Bijaya Bhaacharya who is a praconer

and a fitness trainer. As you master the different forms of pranayama, meditaon and postures, it transcends

you to a state of inner peace, sound health and happiness. The arcle on music by the same author is a

beauful illustraon and research note on the correlaon of music and wellbeing.

The Bangla poems by Amarnath Mukherjee, a person of mulfaceted talent will mesmerize you with his

depicon of God's creavity and affecon for mother.Do not miss his poem on “Facebook”!Ankan Roy will

capvate our readers with his beauful descripon of autumn. Dr. Arunabha Sengupta has penned his thoughts

on Kavi guru Rabindranath Tagore. His other poems have beauful narrave on love and shades of grey

entangling the world. The write-up by Snigdha Choudhury is a chronical of how Durga Puja has gradually

changed over a period from a fesval of faith, devoon to tradion geng lost. But sll the Utsav connues with

    the same vigour and energy!

The arcle ದಸಾೖಭವ wrien in Kannada by Thejaswini gives a vivid descripon of how Navaratri / Dusshera

fesval is celebrated in our country/state – with a lot of grandeur. It emphasizes the importance of Navaratri,

says how powerful Goddess Durga is and the deep values this fesval holds. A few of the famous Devi temples in

Bangalore are menoned. In addion, the arcle touched upon the grand way in which the fesval is celebrated

in Mysoreand how devotees rejoice the victory of Goddess Durga and Lord Rama.

The Hindi arcle penned by Inderpreet is a chronological narrave of Samuel Johnson's “A Diconary of the

English Language” which was published in 1755. This arcle is highly recommended for all to read.

The sketches are the original work of budding arst and is a true indicaon of their arsc potenal in coming

days. As Arunit's capon says, the friendly Spiderman may pop up any me in our home! The artwork by

Ananya speaks highly of her creave urge and quality of her cra. The sketches by Shreyas aresimply adorable.

The poems from our young friends – Anwesha, Titus, Sumitra,Sumedha and Soumik are rich in imagery and

    Dear Friends,

It seems only yesterday when we were all working overtime to finish the job at hand to present Bangalore a Durga Puja with a difference. Six years have gone by since then and each year Anandadhara has grown leaps and bounds with many creative ideas taking shape and transforming the face of Durga Puja celebration in this beautiful city we call our home. The journey so far has been enriching but not easy and on this grand occasion of Durga Puja I would like to thank each and every one of you for your immense cooperation and love in making Anandadhara what it is today.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to each and everyoneat JP Nagar Cultural and Welfare association for being a stupendous source of support since our inception, without your support none of this could have been possible.

This is Anandadhara's 6th year of Durga Puja celebration and like every year this year too we bring you a theme based puja and I am sure you would be more than pleasantly surprised with what has been presented to you by our amazingly efficient creative team.

With the moral of the world at all time low, with wars waging in various parts of the world, with the refugee situation only worsening day by day, human suffering has reached alarming levels. It is time that we alljoin our hands irrespective of our various differences to come together in brotherhood and harmony, promoting with all our hearts what the world needs the most today “Peace”. AnandadharaDurga Puja 2017 represents that very fabric of life which we are slowly forgetting to remember. If we are successful in bringing Peace to at least one person's life with our presentation this year we would happily accept our efforts being a success.

As a non-profit Socio-cultural organization we promise and resolve to be the wind of change and present to you each year a celebration that would keep your hearts warm and happy throughout the year.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has more than willingly come forward to donate and sponsor our Puja fund without which what you see before your eyes wouldn't have been a reality and with that I humbly would expect your encouragement and support for many years to come.

Like every year, Anandam comes to your hand with its refreshing content, we hope you like what we have put together for you.

Wishing each and every one of you a warm and heartfelt greetings on this auspicious occasion of Durga Puja and Dussehra. May Mother Goddess Durga bring peace, calmness and happiness to your lives.

    Happy Pujas !

creavity and definitely not yawn. Read them at leisure to appreciate the innocence of their thoughts.

Publishing souvenirs during Durga Puja is a long-standing tradion of Bengalis. I must menon that Anandam,

our annual Durga Puja souvenir is not just a means to collect adversements, but strives to provide a creave

plaorm to both the young and old minds. You can be assured all the edions of Anandam(s) are for true

keepsake and are a collector's delight.

Durga Puja is the most happening fesval of Bengalis that can be sensed with its spurt of fanfare on all the four

days of the fesval. With the advent of Internet, the world is now a global village and we can get a virtual feel of

Durga Puja from anywhere. However as Bengalis take pride in recreang Durga Puja where they live, there is

Durga Puja now in every connent, country and city. In J P Nagar, Bangalore we too we have taken all efforts to

create the fesve fervor similar to what is witnessed in Bengal.

The history of fesvals is as old as the history of the human society. We celebrate Durga Puja to mark the victory

of Goddess Durga over the evil demon Mahishasura. It is celebrated during the last five days of Navaratri.I

share the commonly known allegory according to which the four days of puja equates to Mother Goddess's

annual visit to her paternal home on earth, along with her four children – Laxmi, Saraswa, Karkeya and

Ganesha. It is interesng to note that the Goddess is an inseparable member of our family and not merely an

    idol who is worshipped.

But, Durga Puja is not merely a religious fesval; it is essenally a socio-cultural celebraon which also renews

harmony among people. It stands for triumph of truth over untruth, victory of righteousness over evil and

jusce for all cizens. This is taking a greater significance in current day context, as evil demonshave manifested

in new avatars like corrupon, terrorism, crime against women, children and oppressed secons of the society.

The modern-day Goddess Durga stands redeeming the mortals on earth from the darkness, untruth, pain,

suffering and gender inequality Cheering the spontaneous outburst of goodwill and gaietyas we celebrate this .

fesval amidst celebrang women's power. Let us pray to Goddess Durga to strengthen the moral fabric of our

society and reinforce our religious beliefs and values, to build a naon in which women and children are treated

    as partners with equal rights.

It's my pleasure to place on record our gratude to all patrons for their generous adversements and

sponsorships which plays a key role in organizing the grand fesval. Also, a big round of applause for all our

authors and arsts who have penned beauful arcles, poems, sketches, etc. which has helped us present a

rich and vibrant edion of Anandam.

I take this opportunity to welcome our new members to the Anandadhara family. We deeply appreciate the

generous support of the members and friends of Anandadhara to make the celebraon a successful and

sustainable one. We thank all the volunteers for their enthusiasc parcipaon in preparaon and

implementaon of our program. Sincere thanks to J P Nagar Cultural and Welfare Associaon for their

cooperaon in arranging this fesval. And last but not the least, your valuable feedback and suggesons for

improving our future edions will be graciously acknowledged.

    Hope you enjoy reading Anandam!

Pujo greengs and loads of good wishes to you from Anandadhara!

  • The fierce sun shone uninhibited,

    Through powerless fleeting clouds,

    Pushed through thirsty brown leaves,

    Heated up the fractured ground.

And heated up a mound of flesh,

    Featherless, fallen off his nest.

His mother's cries sounded like silence

Mixed with foliage and cricket chirps.

And a pair of yellow eyes watched-

The little bird on the naked ground.

The forest saw his regal wings,

Swooping down upon a helpless prey,

    But negated nature's course as

He stopped abruptly on his way.

    Circled round and round above

The helpless one on the burning ground.

The forest watched in silent awe-

    A hooded beak hovering broad,

His gigantic shadow never left the bird.

And the fierce sun failed to heat up

Through the regal, wild, Godly gird.

  • The universal appeal of music is well-known. It influences all levels of human consciousness taking our

aenon away from unpleasant and unwanted maers. Listening to good music keeps us relaxed and calm. A

wealth of studies revealed how music posively influences on physical as well as mental health.

Music does not have language or geographic barrier. It is scienfic indeed, there is growing evidence showing

that the brain responds to music in very different way. Melody and rhythm are interpreted differently in the

brain thannon-musical tones. It resonates many different areas of the brain. A symphony influences

brainwaves to slow down to lower frequency range. It is clinically proven fact that soothing music reduces

levels of the stress hormone known as “corsol”. The result is reducon of hypertension, anxiety etc.On the

other hand posive emoons are evoked. This makes a lasng effect on physiological systems. This is the most

evident reason of evoluon of music therapy.

Effect of music on physical systems of human body

There are a number of other posive

effects apart from relaxaon. It has been

    scienfically proved that music relieves

    pharmaceucal pain during pregnancy.

    During early labour, music promotes

    relaxaon. Listening to good melodies

    releases 'endorphins', which are natural

pain relievers. In fact, music therapy is

being used in pain management, even in

    post-surgicalsituaons.

Music therapy is effecve in reducing

stress in paents with the diagnosis of

    acute myocardial infarcon. Studies

revealed that lowering apical heart rates

were more successful in amusic therapy

group than in a control group. The

incidence of cardiac complicaons are found to be lower in the intervenon groups.

    Children, even infants respond

posively to music. Any parent knows

that it's natural for a child to begin

dancing and singing at an early

age.Music can grab and hold our

aenon of a child, and control goals,

both of which are skills we need to

succeed. Even memory and pace of

    learning are enhanced too.

Music is a part of our lives. A healthy

    lifestyle constutes a wholesome use

of music on an everyday basis. Keep

on listening to soothing music you

love, this helps to maintain good

    health.

    THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC

I watched it fall, dancing with the windA vivid green caught my eyeWhy did it fall, had it sinned? That bold little leaf floated by.

The earth was damp, a barren strangerAs it touched the ground I could have sworn -That I saw it shiver, a lone little ranger Enclosed by the strangeness of the unknown.

The leaf soon succumbed and embraced the earthAs if they were two forgotten old chums.Once lost now found, it seemed their reunion was worth- The parting, as now, to the earth it had come.

I gazed at it appalled as I could not comprehend The familiarity between the leaf and the groundIt had left its home, wasn't it grief- stricken? Did it approve of this vast profound?

Unlike many of us, the leaf had recognized, That the ground was the start; it would be the end.As I stood there and watched, I soon realized That every one of us would have to transcend.

Above these bonds of worldly pleasuresAbove the ephemeral joys and lustAs ashes would only turn back into ashes,And dust shall only go back into dust.

brainwaves to slow down to lower frequency range. It is clinically proven fact that soothing music reduces

levels of the stress hormone known as “corsol”. The result is reducon of hypertension, anxiety etc.On the

other hand posive emoons are evoked. This makes a lasng effect on physiological systems. This is the most

evident reason of evoluon of music therapy.

Effect of music on physical systems of human body

There are a number of other posive

effects apart from relaxaon. It has been

    scienfically proved that music relieves

    pharmaceucal pain during pregnancy.

    During early labour, music promotes

    relaxaon. Listening to good melodies

    releases 'endorphins', which are natural

pain relievers. In fact, music therapy is

being used in pain management, even in

    post-surgicalsituaons.

Music therapy is effecve in reducing

stress in paents with the diagnosis of

    acute myocardial infarcon. Studies

revealed that lowering apical heart rates

were more successful in amusic therapy

group than in a control group. The

incidence of cardiac complicaons are found to be lower in the intervenon groups.

    Children, even infants respond

posively to music. Any parent knows

that it's natural for a child to begin

dancing and singing at an early

age.Music can grab and hold our

aenon of a child, and control goals,

both of which are skills we need to

succeed. Even memory and pace of

    learning are enhanced too.

Music is a part of our lives. A healthy

    lifestyle constutes a wholesome use

of music on an everyday basis. Keep

on listening to soothing music you

love, this helps to maintain good

    health.

    THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC

I watched it fall, dancing with the windA vivid green caught my eyeWhy did it fall, had it sinned? That bold little leaf floated by.

The earth was damp, a barren strangerAs it touched the ground I could have sworn -That I saw it shiver, a lone little ranger Enclosed by the strangeness of the unknown.

The leaf soon succumbed and embraced the earthAs if they were two forgotten old chums.Once lost now found, it seemed their reunion was worth- The parting, as now, to the earth it had come.

I gazed at it appalled as I could not comprehend The familiarity between the leaf and the groundIt had left its home, wasn't it grief- stricken? Did it approve of this vast profound?

Unlike many of us, the leaf had recognized, That the ground was the start; it would be the end.As I stood there and watched, I soon realized That every one of us would have to transcend.

Above these bonds of worldly pleasuresAbove the ephemeral joys and lustAs ashes would only turn back into ashes,And dust shall only go back into dust.

  • It is said "The face is the mirror of the mind”. If the mind is strained the face is bound to be dull. Stress and

depression can easily be read from one's face. Sedentary lifestyle, improper nutrion and illness show up as

dull appearance on your skin as well. It has alwaysbeen an unanswered queson how to remain aracve,

    especially to women.

If you're told that Yoga is the best answer, you must be wondering how the pracce of Yoga can have effects on

the skin. This is understandable, acceptance should not be based on assumpon or a mere suggeson. There

must be a factual proven relaon. However, modern science does not intend to contemplate nor confront the

philosophy of Yoga.Fortunately, researches worldwide, though discrete, have conceded many surprising

abilies of Yoga; looking young is one of them indeed. Let me look into what Yoga brings to a praconer in

simple terms with an inclinaon towards science.

Foremost, we need to understand that Yoga is not synonymous to postures, it is a collecon of disnct

branches, e.g. Kriya, Mudra, Bandha etc. and progressive stages like Pranayama, Meditaon etc. Even if set

aside the spiritual aspects, advancement to higher stage is necessary for beer results.

At the inial stage Yoga focusses on physical exercises. The intenon is to make the body healthy to such a state

that you never has to worry about illness. Instead, completely devote your me on upliing your conscience.

Once aained to this level you are ready to proceed to next stage. Now, let's analyze what goes behind the

scene. Yogic exercises are opmized such that it increases Oxygen intake with least efforts. An example is Surya

Namaskara. Second, it does not increase the demand on heart or lungs to work very hard. In fact, it is suggested

to relax in Savasana in between postures. Third, the blood flow increases to internal organs; not only to the

limbs. Consider the example of inverted postures which creates a flash flow of blood to the brain. By the me

you're elevated to the advanced stage to begin Pranayama, all channels of your body are completely obstacle

free. You hardly need a physical exercise once you reach there. The focus is now shied to maintaining higher

oxygen level, thus the stage of Pranayama is laid out. The result is evident, that we call holiscwellbeing. The

inner peace and sound health appear externally as beauty. You will achieve this benefit even if it is not focused

explicitly. That's the secret of staying young and aracve.

Some of the postures in this context and the benefits they carry:

Matsyasana(FishPose)The fish pose gives a good stretch to our spine and neck. This increases the blood flow in the upper body.

Regular pracce improves skin texture, making you look radiant.Mood, emoons and stress are regulated.

PadaHastasana(StandingForwardBends)This asana invigorates the enre spine and the nervous system. It is an excellent posture to nourish the skin.

Chakrasana(wheelPose)The chakrasana is a great all round toner.

It stretches your spine and reduces

sffness. This asana has a wonderful

    effect on the nervous, digesve,
