Love in the time of Cholera

Duration: 138 mins ~ Drama ~ Language: English ~ Release date: 2008 Producer: Scott Steindorff and Brantley M. Dunaway Director: Mike Newell ~ Country of Origin: USA

Review by David Stratton

In Cartagena, Colombia, in 1879, Florentino Ariza, (UNAX UGALDE), an impressionable youth, falls instantly in love with Fermina Daza, (GIOVANNA MEZZOGIORNO), but her strict father, JOHN LEGUIZAMO, is bitterly opposed to the relation-ship and takes his daughter away from the city. When they meet again, some time later, with Florentino now played by JAVIER BARDEM, Fermina discovers that what she thought was love is an illusion and she rejects her devastated suitor and instead marries Dr. Juvenal Urbino, (BENJAMIN BRATT). Although over the succeeding years Florentino has over 600 lovers, details of which he notes in his diary, he nev-er ceases to love Fermina and in his heart he remains true to her. I must confess that I’ve never read the celebrated novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on which this handsomely produced film is based, but it’s pretty clear that Ronald Harwood’s screenplay only skims the surface of the material. Though Cartagena in the late 19th Century is beautifully evoked in director Mike Newell’s visually sumptuous film, there’s something missing at the core of this love story. The basic problem, I think, lies in the casting. There’s a terrible moment when Fermina sees Florentino again after a long absence and realises she doesn’t love him – terrible because this is the first scene in which JAVIER BARDEM plays the character and he doesn’t look the slightest bit like the actor who played him as a younger man. No wonder Fermina has changed her mind, you think, it’s not the same bloke! Full review http://www.abc.net.au/atthemovies/txt/s2230325.htm
