COVID-19 – Highlights

Maps 1, 2 and 3 (below) shows the incidence rate of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the Region of the Americas reported during EW 41 and 42.

In North America, almost all states in the US still show an incidence rate higher than 300 per 100,000 population, with the northwestern states, Alaska, and West Virginia reporting a rate of over 700 per 100,000 people. In Canada, the Northwest Territories report the highest incidence (>700 per 100,000 pop), followed by Saskatchewan (>300 per 100,000 pop) in the country.

In South America, most federal units of Brazil report less than 300 cases per 100,000 population. In Central America, Belize had the highest incidence rates in the region. Belize district, Stann Creek, and Toledo continue to report over 700 cases per 100,000 populations.

Spotlight – COVID-19 Situation Update – Jamaica Country Office Situation Report #472

Trends: As of 26 October, a total of 88,480 confirmed cases of COVID-19 including 2,184 deaths have been

reported in Jamaica. As of 21 October, there were 28,945 cases (32.9% of confirmed cases) in isolation across the island. New cases decreased by 11.4% and new deaths increased by 27.5% during EW 41. A total of 630,456 samples have been tested at the laboratory with a daily positivity rate of 15.7% and a cumulative positivity rate of 14.0%.

Demographics: As of 12 October 2021, the highest burden of total confirmed cases remains within the 20-29

years and 30-39 years age groups, accounting for 18.8% and 18.0% of cases respectively. Proportion of cases among females were slightly higher than males, with a male to female ratio (M:F) of 1:1.3. On the other hand, males accounted for more deaths, with a M:F ratio of 1:0.9.

Geographical Distribution: Data for 18 October 2021 highlighted that Kingston & St. Andrew (24.8%,

n=21,706) and St. Catherine (18.5%, n=16,214) had the highest cumulative number of cases. The highest proportions of active cases for this week, however, were found in the parishes of St. Catherine and St. James (14.9% and 13.6% respectively). Total infection rates were the highest in the western parishes of St. James and Trelawny, accounting for 4,630 and 4,268 cases per 100,000 population respectively. The total rates of active infections, however for this reporting period were in the eastern parishes of St. Thomas (124.3 cases per 100,000 population) and St. Catherine (106.3 cases per 100,000 population

Hospitalizations: As of 21 October 2021, hospitalizations decreased by approximately 13.7% since the last

reporting period (14 Oct 2021). There was a total of 339 hospitalizations (1.2% of active cases), of which approximately 26.0% (n=88) were moderately ill, 9.7% (n=33) severely ill, and 6.8% (n=23) were critically ill. The average hospital occupancy rate as of 18 October 2021 has improved to 59.1%.
