Past Lives, Dreams and Soul Travel is a phrase commonly used when someone asks what Eckankar is about. I have participated in book discussions of the same title, attended workshops, and I must admit I did not feel much connection to the dreams piece. It’s not that I did not dream; I simply did not oft remember them.
I have learned some valuable techniques to help me remember my night dreams:
♦ Ask the Dream Master/my inner teacher to help me remember my dreams.
♦ Keep a dream journal. Enter
T he public is warmly invited to attend ECK worship services on the second Sunday of
every month in Salt Lake City. Each service focuses
on an aspect of Eckankar’s teachings. Services
often feature a reading from ECK works, singing HU
(an ancient love song to God), talks, music, and a
group discussion of spiritual principles at work in
daily life. Worship service lasts about an hour.
Fellowship and a potluck lunch follow.

dreams upon awaking — even in the middle of the night.
♦ Have my dream journal document open on my computer in the next room. I find it much easier to read a typewritten entry than my handwriting after waking from a slumbering state in the wee hours.
♦ Do a spiritual exercise before retiring to imagine that my dreams are captured in a golden goblet at the side of my bed to help me remember them.
What are waking dreams? At our last Utah Regional ECK Seminar, Juan Antonio and Maria Santestaban, former Regional ECK Spiritual Aides of Mexico, shared some of their experiences with waking dreams. They find great joy in seeing the ECK, or the Holy Spirit, in everyday life. I have heard them tell numerous stories of observing a bird with a damaged wing or seeing a child interact with a parent and how they have discovered a message of truth or benefit for them at the moment. I asked my inner teacher, the Mahanta, to help me find the ECK in everyday life. One day, I had eaten some beef jerky and spent a good deal of energy attempting to remove a piece from between two of my teeth. My tongue was exhausted and so I chose to stop forcing it. An hour later, as I left an event and exited the building, the piece of jerky simply fell out from between my teeth.
Then I remembered a workshop at a major seminar by Mary Carol Moore. She emphasized three points. 1. Hold lightly to your wishes (for an hour I was determined and obsessed with removing the piece of jerky, but eventually relinquished my attachment), 2. Do the work (I did that part) and 3. Let go of the outcome. For me, this is even harder than step one, just trusting Sugmad, or God, that they might have a more helpful outcome in mind (most people seem to say that the outcomes are usually better than if they had orchestrated it themselves).
As I have explored my dream life over the past several weeks, I had several waking dreams. I discovered
a number of spiritual threads that have become woven together in a tapestry of creative dreaming or conscious, active dreaming, which might also be considered Soul Travel as it is an expansion of consciousness.
Today, I feel like I now understand how I have actively dreamed many parts of my life into reality as I have attempted to use my creative imagination and invite the Mahanta, my inner teacher, to help me be a vehicle of love in all of my interactions. I also own that I had the help of the Mahanta many years ago, even before I knew who my inner teacher really was.
So when Simon Cowell asked Susan Boyle, the cheeky 46 year-old English woman who was auditioning on “Britain’s Got Talent,” what her dream was, she declared it was to sing professionally. Then she sang the ballad from “Les Miserables,” “I dreamed a dream,” in which the destitute character, Fantine, surrenders and sings, “…now life has killed the dream I dreamed.”
I am awed at the gift that I have been given intuitively, long before I joined Eckankar to believe that I could live my dream. I now acknowledge that my choice to never surrender was actually promptings of the Mahanta, my inner teacher, to use my creative imagination, expand my consciousness and dream my way back to God!

Dreams touch every level of our life. They may let us glimpse the future,
or give suggestions for healing, or share insights into our relationships. Above all, they can and will steer us more directly toward God.
