In this issue

A few months back, I was talking with a co-worker

who was very distraught. He found himself in a situationat work where he was being directed by his supervisor todo something that made him uncomfortable. As we talked,he explained that what he was asked to do was not illegal,but which was in clear violation of the company’s, as wellas his own, moral and ethical code of conduct.

I told my friend I was sorry to hear this was happeningto him, and shared that over the last couple of years, I hadbeen presented with similar dilemmas. Although mysupervisor’s suggestion was not presented in the form of a“directive,” it nevertheless was presented as a scenariowhere sometimes one does not have the luxury of operatingin a “black and white” world. That, for all intents andpurposes, the world is gray, and as such, perception andthe corresponding calls to action can, and should, beperformed within a gray environment.

My friend asked how I handled those times. I sharedwith him that I would try and negotiate counter solutions.Sometimes I was successful, and sometimes I was not.When the counter solutions were not accepted, it wasexpected that I would carry out the specific call to actionthat would directly compromise my interpretation of thecompany’s code of conduct. During these times, I told myfriend, I would express my discomfort in the same “gray”language mentioned earlier. Even though I never said“no,” which would risk a charge of insubordination, mydiscomfort was, nonetheless, understood as a refusal, andas such, set off a chain of “gray” consequences. I sharedwith my friend that even though the consequences thatfollowed were measurable and caused significant pain, Iremained comfortable with my decision, and accepted theassociated consequences.

I then asked my friend how he was planning to addresshis situation. He said he already followed the directive anddid what he was instructed to do. He further explainedthat when he notified his supervisor that he completed theaction, his supervisor stated that he had no idea what hewas talking about and abruptly ended the call!

My friend was so distressed by this behavior by hissupervisor that I found myself becoming upset too about hisperceived mistreatment. Ultimately, my association withhis experience launched me on a mental initiative to right

Kim’s Message fromthe Afterlife

im and I were co-workers, and somehow we gotaround to talking about spirituality. Kim told me about herrecall of a past life in England, as well as other experiencesforetelling the future. These happened when she was ateenager, and she became so frightened by the experiencesthat she asked God to stop them, and God did, and she wasgrateful.

I talked to Kim about my spiritual path, ECKANKAR,and Kim attended an ECK Worship Service. There shelearned about singing HU, a spiritual exercise anyone canuse to connect with Divine Spirit. Kim attended otherECKANKAR events but never became a member because ofher strong Christian faith. ThenKim took another job and, and weonly had brief contact with eachother through our professionalwork, but she told me she was stillsinging HU!

Then I found out from amutual acquaintance that Kimwas very ill, diagnosed with endstage cancer. Knowing that sheloved the HU Song, I sent her acard along with the book, HU,the Most Beautiful Prayer. Mynote pointed out the recorded HUsong on the CD included with thebook.

A few weeks later, Kim calledme to say that she took the HU CDwith her to every chemotherapysession! She said she was feelingmuch better and that her doctorswere pleased with her progress—the tumors were shrinking, andshe wasn’t having any side effectsat all from the treatment.

Kim said that she was alsousing exercises from the book, TheSpiritual Exercises ofECKANKAR, which she hadbought at one of the ECK events she had attended. Afterdoing a spiritual exercise for two weeks where, every nightbefore bed, she asked Divine Spirit to reveal to her what wasright for her now, she wrote me a letter:

Can’t wait to tell you about my dream or space Soultravel or Astro travel…very enlightening and thenfunny! Take one day at a time. I’m ready for lunch ordinner, my treat. See ya soon my sister in HU!”When we met for lunch, Kim told me about her dream

travel experience. In the lucid dream, Kim said I took her to aplace that was like a library. We were greeted by threewomen wearing white. We separated, and Kim met with

two of the women. They asked why Kim was there, what shewanted of them. Kim said she wanted whatever they desiredto reveal to her. Kim remembers the women looking at eachother and smiling, and one told her that what she soughthad already been revealed to her. Kim was curious aboutthis answer, but accepted it. They got up to escort her out.On the way, Kim wondered, to herself, if there was a signthat she could use to show me after her passing that she wasOK and that life continues after death. One of the womenleaned close and whispered in her ear, “pink butterflies.”

When Kim awoke in her body, she was excited about theexperience, but she thought the whispered words wereridiculous. The more she thought about it, the more upsetshe became because it seemed nonsense to her. She couldn’twait to see if butterflies had some meaning for me, becausethey didn’t for her.

After telling me her tale at our lunch, she leanedexpectantly across therestaurant table and asked ifbutterflies meant anything tome. “Not really,” I replied! Wealso wondered why “pink?”The next day, I decided to sendmy friend an ECKANKARJournal that I had on hand. Forsome reason, I had gotten thebook from a shelf weeks beforeand put it on the desk in myroom without reading it. So Ipicked it up and started lookingat the book’s stories, and cameacross one called, “TheButterfly.” It was a story by awoman whose son hadcommitted suicide. She had anexperience with a butterfly, andthen discovered that thebutterfly is a symbol ofresurrection. The woman’sbutterfly experience reassuredher that her son was still alive,that there truly is life afterdeath. I then knew why I hadthe urge to send that book toKim!

Because we both had wondered about the pink color, Iused my computer to Google the spiritual meaning of colors,which indicated the color pink represents unconditionallove, or love requiring nothing in return. It is also the colorof friendship. Now it was clear why Kim was given thephrase “pink butterflies” during her dream travelexperience! So, I put the information on the color pink in thenote to Kim along with the book, indicating that she shouldcheck out the story about the butterfly!

Message Received--Loud & Clear — continued from page 1

As my head surged downward, my shoulder met thefloor first with a terrific thud! The two feet that passed bymy head earlier were very gracefully maneuvering the glassshower door up and out of its track. So, as the first part ofmy fall had me off my feet, and the second part had mehitting the floor, the third part had the glass door launchingup and out, and shattering all over me.

As I lay on the floor covered in a thousand pieces ofshattered glass, I performed a quick diagnostic on myjostled body. Once my scan revealed that only my pridewas impacted, I immediately recognized the message I wasprovided, and verbally responded, with a smile, “I got it,Mahanta [another name for Divine Spirit], thank you.” As Iset about cleaning up, I thought about the message that wasjust provided. I found that it segmented nicely into threeparts: The first, the slip, represented how fast my actionswould have taken flight, if I had executed my plan toachieve justice for my friend; the second, the thump of myperson hitting the floor, represented the thundering jolt myactions would have leveled. And finally, the third part, theshattered glass doorway, represented the rippling effect myactions would have imparted on so many parties.

In ECK Wisdom on Inner Guidance (p. 50), SriHarold Klemp relates a story where a woman was helpingtroubled youth deal with others’ negative actions. DivineSpirit nudged the woman to say:

“In life, we don’t have much control over whatother people will say or do, or how they willbehave, but we do have control of how weunderstand it and let it affect us.”

I am so grateful for the wonderful gift of this “wakingdream” experience. My shower misstep helped me to avoidcreating a much larger, karmic misstep in my life. Itprovided an opportunity to prevent wreaking havoc onmyself and others, while also shattering a mental andemotional doorway that no longer needs to be a part of mylife. Thank you Mahanta: Message received—loud andclear!

An Invitation to Sing HU,a Love Song to God

With eyes open or closed, take a fewbreaths to relax. Then begin to sing HU(pronounced like the word hue) in a long,drawn-out sound: HU-U-U-U. Takeanother breath, and sing HU again.Continue for up to twenty minutes. SingHU with a feeling of love, and it willgradually open your heart to God.

After Kim read the butterfly story in the book I mailedher, she stopped by my office. In our conversation, I couldtell that she was seeing the larger picture now: how DivineSpirit can arrange experiences in our lives to give us aspiritual realization or whatever we need most at that time.

Kim and I continued to meet for lunch or a movie foranother year before her cancer started to grow again. Ivisited her when she went into hospice. Her cousin was inher room along with several former co-workers. Kim toldeveryone the story of the pink butterfly dream experience. Iadded that we discovered the butterfly is the Christiansymbol of resurrection, life after death, and that pinkrepresents unconditional love.

My beautiful friend Kim passed away four days later, ona warm, sunny afternoon. At the memorial service, Kim’scousin—the one who heard the story of the pink butterfliesduring the hospice visit with Kim—sought me out toexcitedly share her story. She said that when the call cameto tell her that Kim had passed, right at that moment, shelooked down and, on the wrist of a child near her, she saw abracelet with a large, pink butterfly! We both knew it wasKim’s promised sign! With the help of Divine Spirit, Kimwas telling both of us that all was well with her, and thatshe, as Soul, lived on after leaving her physical body.Thanks Kim, for your message! And thank you Kim for yourgift of unconditional love. Backatcha girlfriend!
