SEPTEMBER 13, 2020 ~ YEAR A 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection: I Tell You, You Should Forgive Not Seven Times, But Seventy-Seven Times.24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Forgiveness from the heart The mercy we practise in family life takes many forms. We encourage, we support, we carry one another. But the most necessary form of mercy is the ability to forgive. Its not always easy to forgive, but it is necessary. If there is no forgiveness among family members, problems start to multiply. Sufferings of all kinds develop and create walls that separate us from each other. On the other hand, if day after day we forgive, ordinary relations remain possible and love can always be reborn. Forgiveness is not always easy; it is one of the most unselfish acts of love. Forgiveness can also be one of the greatest acts of freedom - the freedom to love even the one who has done you wrong. When it is hard to forgive, this is a grace we must ask for. Sometimes our human strength is not enough and we must ask God in humility and prayer. Sometimes it takes time to receive this grace, and this is normal. When were very deeply wounded, receiving this grace can take time and a lot of prayer, patience, and humility It is difficult to say, I forgive you.It is easier to forgive the way Jesus does. When Jesus forgave his enemies on the cross, he turned to the Father and said, Father, forgive them. They know not what they do. When we find it too hard to say, I forgive you,we too must turn to the Father, because in the end only God can really forgive. We have to turn to the Father and say those words of Jesus, Father, forgive him - or forgive her – because he (or she) doesnt know what he (or she) is doing”…. To forgive, we have to go through the heart of the Father. This is the source of forgiveness. It is not in me; its the heart of God, and thats where I have to go looking for forgiveness. 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reflection: “I Tell You, You Should Forgive

Not Seven Times, But Seventy-Seven Times.”

24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Forgiveness from the heart

The mercy we practise in family life takes many forms. We encourage, we support, we carry one another. But the most necessary form of mercy is the ability to forgive. It’s not always easy to forgive, but it is necessary.

When we’re very deeply wounded, receiving this grace can take time and a lot of prayer, patience, and humility … It is difficult to say, “I forgive you.” It is easier to forgive the way Jesus does. When Jesus forgave his enemies on the cross, he turned to the Father and said, Father, forgive them. They know not what they do. When we find it too hard to say, “I forgive you,” we too must turn to the Father, because in the end only God can really forgive. We have to turn to the Father and say those words of Jesus, “Father, forgive him - or forgive her – because he (or she) doesn’t know what he (or she) is doing”…. To forgive, we have to go through the heart of the Father. This is the source of forgiveness. It is not in me; it’s the heart of God, and that’s where I have to go looking for forgiveness. … Magnificat/Fr. Jacques Philippe

Our parish is funded solely by our parishioners. Even though the number of people attending Mass is limited, the parish still has expenses and counts on your support. We thank

those who contribute monthly through pre-authorized debit. We invite all others to send their regular contri-butions by cheque to the office via Canada Post, drop it off through the mail slot of the Rectory door, or at the office during office hours. You could also have your monthly donations automatically deposited to the parish account on the 7th of every month. You would just need to fill out and sign the Pre-Authorized Debit form (which can be found on the Parish Website www.olphkamloops.ca under Ministries), scan and email it or mail it back to the office. Thank you for remembering to support the parish.

DURING THIS pandemic, please take this time to study your faith.

Go on Formed.org. Click on sign up, click on I belong to a parish or organization, type in Our Lady of Perpetual Help (our parish will show on a list and click on that) and then either sign up with your name and email address, or sign in if you have a membership already.

Choose Life Kamloops (40 Days for Life) September 23 - November 1.

We will begin with a prayer vigil on Tuesday September 22nd at 7 pm at the Cathedral. This is an invitation for every parish to participate in prayer and fasting so that the entire Body of Christ can unite around a common focus especially in these uncertain times of

COVID to protect the inherent dignity of all life.

Kamloops parishes will continue to hold their public presence outside Sacred Heart Cathedral on 3rd Avenue from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm daily and this year we invite all parishes to join us wherever you are and whenever you are able to pray to an end to the culture of death in our country and world.

We will unveil the Facebook page September 1 to encourage everyone to start preparing for the 40 days for Life time of prayer. Please email [email protected] for further information or any questions you may have. We pray that everyone across our Diocese will come together this fall and turn our hearts and minds to a culture of life.

SPECIAL COLLECTION SUNDAY - Due to COVID-19 a number of the second collections were missed during this year.

In order to give parishioners an opportunity to contribute to the various needs of the Universal Church, “Special Collection Sunday” is designated in our Diocese as the weekend of October 17 & 18, 2020.

Parishioners who wish to contribute to the “Church in the Holy Land” (originally scheduled for Good Friday), the “Needs of the Church in Canada”, the “Pope’s Pastoral Works” (originally scheduled for the Second Sunday of Easter) and “World Mission Sunday” (originally scheduled for October 25) are encouraged to bring their enve-lopes for these important works of the Church on the weekend of October 17 or 18, 2020.

REGISTERING FOR WEEKEND MASSES. As the limit of 50 people, including the clergy, is still in force, we thank everyone who has signed up for a weekend Mass. Please note that you can only sign up for ONE Mass. Also, if you have signed up for a Mass and know you will be away, please let the office know BEFORE noon on Friday, so that we can give the spot (s) to someone on the wait-ing list.

Thank you also to those who have agreed to attend Mass every other Sunday so that those on waiting lists have the opportunity to attend Mass too!

And remember, if you are not feeling well, or have a compromised immune system, or are living with someone who has, please stay home. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass during the pandemic has not been lifted.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL

COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that

You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive

You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

“Peter approached Jesus and asked him, "Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I for-give? As many as seven times?" Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times." (Mt 18:21-22)

Wrath and anger are hate-ful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the LORD’s vengeance, for he

remembers their sins in detail. (Sir 27:30 - 28:1)

Vengeance in the human heart is the angry portion of justice. Vengeance, or the infliction of punish-ment upon one who has done moral wrong, is not a bad thing in itself as it is certainly a part of justice. The only thing is – vengeance belongs entirely to God (Dt 32:35).

If vengeance belongs to God alone (in the sense that God’s anger is always perfect and justifiable) then we should avoid acting like it falls to us to dispense it.

Vengeance itself results in a succession of injury and suffering. Thus the need to forgive “seventy-seven times” if one is to truly imitate God.
