Referencing Style for JET
Authors submitting to JET are responsible for ensuring that their reference lists and in-text
referencing styles conform to the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association (APA, 5th Edition). Manuscripts not conforming to APA style will be
returned to the author(s) for correction. Authors are responsible for all information provided in
their reference lists.
To help you in preparing your reference lists, the following samples are provided. The five
most common citations to appear in the reference lists of submissions to the JET are:
1. Book:
McCully, C. (2009). The sound structure of english: An introduction. New York: Cambridge
University Press.
Leaver, B.L., Ehrman, M., & Shehkman, B . (2005). Achieving success in second language
acquisition. New York: Cambridge University Press.
2. Journal articles:
Papathanasiou, E. (2009). An investigation of two ways of presenting vocabulary. ELT
Journal. 63(4), 313-320.

Family name, comma, initial(s), period & (same style for other authors).
Date in brackets, followed by a period. authors).
Italicize and use lower case letters for book titles, except for the first word of the title and for the first word after a colon in the title. , period & (same style for other authors).
Spell out publisher name rather than abbreviating as CUP.
For multiple authors’ the last author’s name is preceded by ampersand instead of “and”. , period & (same style for other authors).
Article title in lower case letters except for the first word of title and the first word after a colon in the title. , period & (same style for other authors).
Journal titles use upper case letters and italics
Volume number only in italics, followed by issue number in brackets (no space), followed by a comma
Do not use "pp." for citing journal pages. . authors).
