SIMOTION Top LoadingOptimized handling functions for packaging machines

Short product changeover times, quick format changes and the con-tinuously increasing diversity of packaging materials are just someof the challenges faced by the manufacturers of packaging machines. As a result, there is a growing tendency to use handling robots directlyin the process. With SIMOTION Top Loading, we are offering you astandard application for motion tasks that occur frequently in handlingprocesses, allowing you to create innovative machine concepts.

A better performance all roundSIMOTION Top Loading delivers astandardized software library whichsignificantly simplifies engineering, programming and operation whileincreasing the performance of themachine. Advantages offered by the SIMOTIONTop Loading standard application

Easy conguring of different kinematics(gantry, SCARA, articulated arm, roller, delta and specialized kinematics)

Standardized Top Loading applicationfor all SIMOTION platforms

Integrated automation of the wholemachine with a single control system

Preconfigured interfaces for the integrationof product detection vision systems

No training in robot programming languagesrequired thanks to uniform, IEC 61131-3-

    compliant programming methods

Optimized PathThe path can be traversed at either con-stant or variable speed. The variable pathspeed is calculated by the Top Loadinglibrary which also monitors and limitsthe dynamics of the physical axes, thegeometry axes X, Y and Z (TCP) and thepath axes. All these functions make itmuch easier now for the user to programthe motion paths. Gantry, scara, arti-culated arm, roller and delta kinematicsare already integrated. Thanks to thestandardized parameterization of trans-formations, the rest of the softwareremains unchanged.

Easy programmingThanks to the sample applications, inte-grated error handling and uniform diag-nostic structures that are delivered withthe software, it is easy to integrate themotion tasks of the Top Loading modulecell into the main project. The motionprogram is extremely easy to configureusing the extensive set of motion, jumpand control commands. The softwarelibrary even provides single-axis andcoupling commands for additional syn-chronized or infeed axes. The definitionof work areas and barred zones, reportzones or product zones is also supportedthree-dimensionally.

The toolbox for standardizedapplicationsThe SIMOTION Top Loading tech-nology package is one of severalapplications for the automation ofpackaging machines and is an inte-gral component of the OptimizedPackaging Line toolbox. This tool-box offers standard solutions forwidely used machine types andcommon tasks based on theSINAMICS drive system and theSIMOTION motion control system. With Optimized Packaging Line, wehave developed a concept to auto-mate the entire packaging linebased on a uniform automation

    and communication standard.

    WOLF Packaging Equipment

Chooses New, Low-CostControl ConceptAn innovative manufacturer is now also using theSINAMICS S120 intelligent drive system for itsmachine control tasks

With more than 15 years experience in the industry and over 1000systems installed worldwide, WOLF Verpackungsmaschinen GmbH isone of the worlds leading tubular bagging machine vendors for a widerange of bag types and sizes. The simpler machines, which are deployedin very large numbers worldwide, are particularly vulnerable to pricepressure. That is why every opportunity for cutting costs must be exploit-ed to the full including the electrical equipment. Here, WOLF has opted

for a new and very efficient concept: It uses the technology functions ofthe SINAMICS S120 drive system for machine control, allowing the com-pany to dispense with its own controller hardware.

    The challenge:Maintaining functionalitywhile reducing components

The vertical tubular baggingmachine can shape, fill, and sealup to 120 bags with a maximum

Meeting this variety of differenttasks usually involves implementingtwo systems: servo drives and the

control system. In the case of the drives, WOLFhas already been using the

Fast implementation, convincing resultThe project presented here was execut-ed as part of an undergraduate disser-tation the best proof that such an au-tomation solution is possible withoutgreat engineering costs and systemknow-how. And additional functions, such as print mark correction and filmslip compensation, can be implement-ed at any time with this machine.

Open for expansionThe solution described here is imple-mented with a scalable SINAMICS driveplatform and is therefore not limitedto simple machines: The number ofaxes and signal inputs/outputs canbe expanded if and when needed.A separate controller system such asSIMOTION or SIMATIC can be added foradditional, more complex control tasks.

Entire machine control implemented in the

drive, that is, customers own controllerhardware no longer required. This makesthe solution particularly economical.

Drive system also performsall control tasksThe CU320 control unit was chosen toimplement the new concept with theSINAMICS S120 drive system. Thismodule is particularly powerful: It cancontrol several drives at once, includ-ing the positioning functionality.Technological functions and controltasks can be implemented with pro-grammable software blocks, thenumber of signal inputs/outputs pass-ing through an interface and terminalmodules can be expanded as required. This permits implementation of allnecessary machine functions.A touch panel is used for operationand recipe management, which com-municates with the CU320 via PROFI-BUS.

Drag drop connect and off you go!All technological functions and controltasks were implemented using theSINAMICS functionality Drive controlChart (DCC). These are ready-pro-grammed function blocks such as logiccommands, adders, ON/OFF delays, orclosed-loop control blocks. Almost anynumber of these blocks can be usedand interconnected or connected toprocess signals. This is done simply byselecting them in a graphical editor, interconnecting and then dependingon the type of block parameterizingthem. All control tasks, including the variousoperating modes, machine start/stop,proportioning calculation, temperaturecontrol, dead-time compensation etc.can therefore be implemented simplyand directly in the drive.

banks on retro fittingpackaging machinesLeading manufacturer enjoys the benefitsof modern motion control technology

Packaging consumer goods at a high turnover rate demands modern,high-performance motion technology. As a leading manufacturer ofvertical high-speed forming, filling, and sealing machines, as wellas packaging systems, the Sandiacre Packaging Machinery com pany, founded in Nottingham in the UK in 1969, has responded to itscustomers requirements. Increasingly, these customers have beendemanding space-saving solutions.

Sandiacre were prompted to assesstheir existing machinery offer whenthey received an order from a verylarge food producer for a new rangeof vertical form/fill/seal machines. The technical specification for

standardizing their systems requiredthe use of motion control techno l-ogy from Siemens. This started the

Good things come in small packagesThe packaging market demands com-pact control and drive technology.Siemens proposed a solution basedon combining a SIMOTION Dmotion controller with the universalSINAMICS S120 drive system andstandard 1FK7 servo motors. TheMP277 panel was used with themachine for visualization, operatorguidance, and parameterizationpurposes. To ensure that the imageprinted onto the plastic film usedalways fits the tubular bag, the printmark is detected by a sensor. IndustrialEthernet is used for connection to thecompany network. The ET 200M distri-buted I/O system for detecting digitaland analog systems is connected viaPROFIBUS.

Less space needed in the controlcabinetIn twin form/fill/seal machines, two

single form/fill/seal machines areplaced next to each other and equip-ped with a shared control cabinet. This

allows the two axes of each single in-termittent form/fill/seal machine to becombined in a compact 4-axis unit, anarrangement which requires less spacein the control cabinet. Foil extractorsand traverse sealing units are found ina drive line-up. The tubular bag sealedby the traverse sealing unit can befilled with free-flowing/free-pouringproducts. A pulse-driven sealing deviceis used as part of this process.

Teamwork makes difficult tasks easyThe Siemens solutions exceeded our ex-pectations throughout the entire project, commented Jim Goodwin, a technicaldirector of the company. According toMr. Goodwin, this meant: The solution wassimple and could be directly implementedin a number of our vertical form/fill/sealmachines. Also, you could not put a price onthe fact that a Siemens engineer was presenton site throughout the entire project tosupport our in-house engineers and adviseon the best choice of products. After thesuccess of this first upgrade, we are now inthe process of applying the concept to therest of our intermittent form/fill/seal ma-chines, with a view to extending it to ourcontinuous form/fill/seal machine rangesduring the next year.

Engineering reduced by the useof standardized software librariesReady-to-use, tried-and-tested, easilyadapted standard solutions were usedin the form of open software librariesin an effort to meet the tight schedule.Already capable of realizing a largeproportion of the motion functions, such as removing the foil or correctingthe print mark, these offered a meansof reducing the proportion of sof twareactually developed in-house and theassociated engineering for the ma-chine to a considerable extent.

Scalable hardwareThe proportioning system is the heartof the packaging line, comprising eightindependent worm feeders driven bySiemens 1FT6 servomotors. Theseservomotors enable the sachet fillingmachine to achieve optimum produc-tion speed thanks to their compact

dimensions and high torque. At thesame time, SIMOTION D controls theworm feeders individually and, withthem, the amount of product filledinto every single sachet.

    Highlights:

The PLC was combined with thesystems Motion Control technology, making it easier to optimize the mo-tion sequences, as well as reducingthe number of interfaces and the asso-ciated engineering costs. The combi-nation offered a means of implement-ing all of the checking functions forthe stick pack machine in a very com-pact construction and in a singleintelligent controller. This architecturehas numerous advantages, includingits unique but flexible developmentenvironment and the ability to orga-

nize software in modules and integratetemperature control. SIMOTION Dtherefore assumes responsibility forall aspects of machine automation. Everything from a single sourceSignals from the linked SiemensSIWAREX CS weighing system areused to correct the filling process.

Each stick pack is checked individuallyand placed in a car ton by means of apick & place function. This functionis also performed by servomotors toensure the necessary dynamic per-formance.

Safety integratedThe safety functions integrated intoSINAMICS S120 enabled Universal-Pack to utilize the Safe Torque Off(STO) functions certified in accordancewith SIL 2 at a standstill, which led tosubstantial cost savings as a conse-quence of reductions in hardware andswitchgear cabinet requirements.

Simple line integrationOMAC-compliant interface blocks forSIMOTION D lower the costs of datacommunications between the machine

modules and the visualization systemwith MultiPanel 277.

Speeding up the machineproduction processThe positive experience gathered inthis project induced Universal-Pack toimplement other machine modules, such as pick & place and car toners,

on the same platform. This led to con-siderable reductions in the develop-ment time and associated time-to-mar-ket for the new models.

Optimized Packaging Line: Just the solution for you

Whether in the food and beverage or pharmaceutical industries, the

problems are always the same: Machines from various manufacturers

must be connected up in one line. That often means high integration

maintenance costs and thus high operating costs as well.

Furthermore, theres a lack of transparency in the production processes,

    Standardization integrated

Optimized Packaging Line rigorously applies and implements the international standards of OMAC

and the PROFINET User Group. The user organization OMAC has set the goal of defining guidelines for

the wide-scale introduction of open and modular automation architectures, and the use of these

international standards makes line integration considerably simpler and faster. The details of com-

munication via PROFIBUS or PROFINET are also defined including uniformly and clearly assigned

interfaces for messages and alarms as well as a continuous operating concept throughout the entire

    system.
