Issue Identification and Strategy Development

For a wide variety of clients we serve as a sparring partner for creating their roadmap to sustainability. We have a proven

track record helping clients in identifying their main Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues. Our approach is always

tailored to the specific requirements of our client’s projects. It often involves identifying the views of the companies’ main

stakeholders, analyzing benchmarks, and collecting (through tailored questionnaires) internal and external insights. Based

on these findings, we help clients develop their CSR/sustainability strategy, formulate a clear policy, and design an action

plan for further implementation in their organization.

For many of our clients, besides assisting them with their general CSR strategy, we have also focused on specific

sustainability issues like climate change, supply chain sustainability, human rights, or community involvement.

Reporting and Monitoring

Our advisory group has a strong track record in providing consultancy services to companies in the selection of their CSR

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), data definition, handling, and reporting. We assist our clients in all (or specific)

aspects of sustainability reporting, namely:

• Content: identifying sustainability themes using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) methodology, formulating KPIs

and the related so-called activity data.

• Organization: setting up the internal organizational procedures to effectively collect, handle, validate, and

communicate the data. When necessary, we provide clients with Royal HaskoningDHV consultants to act as in-

company assistants.

• ICT: providing ICT support to capture sustainability data (integrate in clients’ system as well as through our own

advanced Excel-based application).

• Communication: assisting in the communication of the sustainability message, writing chapters or cases for CSR

reports, or reviewing draft reports.

Our clients have different ambitions regarding their sustainability report. We work for first-time reporters as well as

experienced, high-level reporters. During the whole process of making a CSR report we serve as a sparring partner.

Several of our clients have received the Kristal Award for the best Sustainability Report of a Dutch company, or have

made substantial progress in relevant sustainability ratings, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the CDP

Leadership Indices, and the Dutch Transparency Benchmark

Implementation and Training

We assist companies in meeting the challenge of effectively implementing socially responsible and sustainable business

practices. We have helped our clients to further embed sustainability in their organization. When assisting our clients we

maintain a hands-on and pragmatic approach.

Here is a selection of our activities in the field of implementation and training:

• Implementing ISO standards, including the ISO 26000 guideline, the CSR Performance ladder, the CO2 –

Performance ladder (SKAO), in all of the organization’s specialties and activities.

• Formulating business integrity policies and codes of conduct.

• Managing sustainable supply chains (developing supplier codes of conduct, audits, training, and greening product

portfolio).

• Developing and facilitating trainings and workshops for specific target groups, like account managers and sustainable

procurement staff.

• Developing tools (including website and e-tool) to implement CSR.

• Facilitating our Sustainability Challenge Game aimed at developing sustainable business opportunities.

• Executing sustainability programs by way of a secondment of an Royal HaskoningDHV consultant to the client.

Events and Memberships

Besides the work we do for our clients, we also focus on developing the sustainability concept. To this end, we organize

various events, host a website, and are an active member of CRS-related organizations.

Publications

We are active in publishing articles and giving interviews which highlight (new) relevant issues and opinions on

sustainability in the some of the country’s most important media. We also publish articles in specialized journals and

magazines.

In 2012, we were privileged to publish a book about the implementation of corporate social responsibility, in assignment of

the Dutch foundation Stichting Management Studies, called ‘Duurzaam ondernemen waarmaken, het bedrijfskundig

perspectief!’ (translated as “Managing the transition to a sustainable enterprise").
