It is a pleasure to be visiting Kenya on this economic mission and bringing a group of renowned Dutch companies to this beautiful country. The Netherlands and Kenya have a longstanding relationship based on development cooperation and growing bilateral trade relations.

I am proud to present to you a business delegation that represents Dutch expertise and know-how in a range of sectors, including agrifood, horticulture and (maritime) infrastructure. In these and other sectors the Netherlands has the potential to establish valuable partnerships with Kenyan counterparts. Importantly, Dutch enterprises and research institutes have a strong reputation for promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Kenya is on its way to becoming a middle-income country. In 2013 the Kenyan economy is expected to grow by four to five per cent, a trend that is likely to continue in the coming years. The Netherlands is currently Kenya’s third-largest export destination. The current growth and potential of the Kenyan economy offers ample opportunity for strengthening ties and exploring new ways of trading and doing business with each other. Dutch companies are eager to step up cooperation with their Kenyan counterparts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is therefore working to develop an enabling environment for Dutch companies, both small and large, to operate successfully in Kenya. The principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR) are a crucial component of these efforts.

The aim of this economic mission is to foster business development. We will kick off in Nairobi, and continue on to Naivasha and Mombasa. I am convinced that our mission will have important added value for all the participants, some of whom are already operating successfully in Kenya, while others are considering entering the Kenyan market. The goal of this mission is to identify and facilitate new alliances and opportunities for cooperation between Kenya and the Netherlands.

I wish the participating organisations from Kenya and the Netherlands every success in establishing inspiring new contacts and working together, with the aim of building strong ties both now and in the future.

The economic relationship between Kenya and the Netherlands is strong and diverse. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Netherlands is the third export destination for Kenyan goods. Dutch companies are important investors in the horticultural sector but also in other areas of the economy. The economic mission led by the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, Ms Lilianne ploumen, underlines the commitment of the Dutch government to further strengthen our bilateral economic relations with Kenya.

And there is great potential for that: Kenya is the gateway to East and Central Africa, a regional business hub and a major tourist destination. Both our countries have deep rooted traditions of entrepreneurship that complement each other well.

I am therefore pleased that you have taken the opportunity to explore further openings for business in this beautiful country full of business potential.

I am grateful to the Kenyan authorities in Nairobi, Naivasha and Mombasa for their tremendous support for this mission. I am convinced that the visit will catalyse further deepening of bilateral trade and investment.

I wish all participants, both Kenyan and Dutch, a pleasant and successful cooperation.

Introducing the Netherlands

A country that was in need of more land for agriculture… Where land was reclaimed from the sea and kept dry: the famous ‘polders’. A country supposedly too cold to grow certain vegetables and flowers... Where greenhouses were invented as a solution to this problem. Where Dutch farmers now produce 2.5 times more food per acre than EU farmers produce on average… We know food & flowers.

A country that the Dutch created in the delta of three large rivers, flowing into the North Sea… Where two thirds of GDP are earned below sea level… Where there used to be a lake almost two million acres wide where Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is today… Where innovative and daring solutions for water control protect half of the country against the risk of being flooded. It earned us a worldwide reputation… We know water.

A country that is the gateway to Europe… Connecting nearly half a billion consumers in the European hinterland to the world’s producers… Thanks to the world-class Port of Rotterdam, the internationally praised Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, an extensive network of waterways, Europe’s strongest road transport sector and an extensive network of rail links… We know logistics.

A country with an open and cooperative attitude… Whose residents have always felt the need to explore what lies beyond its borders... Where the world’s first multinational corporation originated in the 17th century. A country where, today, 87% of people who are 15 years or older speak English… We know international business.

Agrico is a co-operative enterprise of 850 private farmers and is exclusively focused on breeding, production and marketing of seed- and ware potatoes.

Annual production has reached the total figure of 850.000 tonnes. Of which 550,000 tonnes of seed potatoes. These are produced in The Netherlands (400.000T) and abroad (France, UK, poland, Scandinavia, Canada, aso, 150.000 T), We also produce 300,000 tonnes of ware potatoes , which are mainly for the fresh markets. By virtue of these quantities Agrico is Europe’s largest potato enterprise, and the biggest seed potato producer and exporter in the world.

The major share of Agrico’s turnover goes for export. An extensive network of foreign and overseas offices and agents is instrumental in annual transactions of seed- and ware potatoes to over 85 countries all over the world.

To an important extent Agrico owns this unique position to research, and breeding activities in a constant effort to develop new and vastly improved potato varieties. The portfolio of varieties is suitable for any climatically condition, culture, or market purpose. Agrico has varieties available which will thrive, botanically as well as economically. Our production is with experienced farmers, on excellent soils. The combination of varieties and quality are our unique selling points, giving us our strong market position.

Since the Kenyan and Dutch government reached bilateral agreements on phytosanitary regulations, variety testing and protection, Agrico started a daughter business in Nairobi. Agrico East Africa with 5 staff members, are looking after Agrico’s interest in the region. Our strategy is to provide seed potatoes of the right varieties, locally produced, to Kenya and surrounding countries. This to the benefit of the whole potato chain. We are sure that we can boost potato production in Kenya and the rest of East Africa, this to reach food security for the population.

Annelies ClaessensHead of Mission, Cordaid Office Kenya

For almost a century, Cordaid has been fighting poverty and exclusion in fragile and conflict areas. We are ideally positioned to mobilize citizens, (social) enterprises, NGOs, governments and companies to bring about real change. We are continually seeking partnerships with the private sector, so as to match innovative solutions to real development needs. Working with over 800 local partners, we are deeply rooted in the areas in which we operate. Our professionals work with communities to build resilience and self-reliance, tackling multiple disciplines ranging from efficient and consumer driven health systems to child education, climate resilience and food security.

We invest in social impact and have the track record to prove our innovative methods. Supported by 316,000 private donors and institutional donors such as the Worldbank, the EU, and the Global Fund, we have a firm base and the leverage to get the job done.

Local communities and urban settlements in Kenya, are challenged by unsustainable and instable social and economic conditions. For example, frequent drought in pastoral areas that disrupt livestock and living conditions, also causing rise to political tensions. This will not be immediately solved by the discovery of underground aquifers, but by long term affordable and owned community solutions. Similarly, overcrowding and poor infrastructure in rampantly growing informal cities is a source of much illness and tension. Water and sanitation solutions offer relief and bio-energy technologies, potential for promise.

We are keen to participate in this trade mission as a means to expand the possibilities to deliver joint solutions to some of the world’s real development challenges.

Deltares and Africa

In Africa economic expansion, growing populations but on the other hand subsidence and the impact of climate change are putting pressure on available space in deltas, coastal zones and river basins. This affects local population, businesses and the environment. Managing densely populated vulnerable areas is complex. Our African clients need an integrated multi-discplinary application of our expertise. They want solutions that are affordable, sustainable and good for the local people. Deltares can do just that; next to technological aspects we will address ecological aspects and constraints related to spatial planning, policies, legislation, governance and economical processes.

Gerard TierolfDirector

Originally the Company FAT dc started the production of Universal cable dual controls, for driving schools, in 1989. Since 1999, the business is established in Utrecht, right in the heart of the Netherlands.

The FAT dual controls distinguishes themselves from other comparable products by the innovative use of cables instead of fixed bars. Due to this universal application the dual control fits any car, truck or bus, with no more than small adaptations.

After the Dutch market was well covered with a network of dealers, we decided to have a look across the border. It became evident that also in neighboring countries there was an increasing demand for dual controls of this kind.

FAT dc cooperate with many different organizations, there are off coarse the dealers and large driving schools, but also NGO’s who by improving the standard of driving instruction (with our product) try to improve road safety.

The FAT dual control is being exported to almost every country within Europe, and to many other parts of the world. We have dealers in over 35 countries.participation in this trade/fact-finding mission is an excellent opportunity to visit interested parties in Kenya. We are looking for a dealer for Kenya and other interested parties Driving schools or Car-adapters.

Mr. Gerard Tierolf the proprietor of FAT dc look forward to a sunny and interesting trade mission, he hopes that this first business trip to Kenya will bring good contacts and opportunities for a future cooperation.

FoodTechAfrica (FTA) is a public-private initiative combining the strengths of Dutch agro-food companies (mainly SMEs), knowledge institutes, governmental agencies and their East-African counterparts to improve food security in East Africa through the establishment of a fully integrated aquaculture value chain.

Food security: growing demand for protein-rich products East Africa is facing a growing demand for animal protein, due to a sharp growth in population, rapid urbanisation, rising incomes and changes in food habits. This results in increasing demand for sustainably produced, safe, nutritious and protein-rich food products. At present, local actors are unable to meet this demand. This results in nutritional deficiency, inconsistent supply and excessively high prices for a substantial part of the population. Fish are efficient forms of livestock in terms of water usage, feed conversion and greenhouse gas emissions. This healthy source of animal protein offers substantial opportunities to improve food security, when produced in a sustainable manner.

Objective of FTA The objective of FTA is to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of a fully integrated aquaculture value chain in East Africa. This contributes to the development of local capacity through knowledge transfer, linking existing primary production processes and results in a positive spin-off in terms of increased production and productivity, improved infrastructure and technical capacity, more efficient markets and local entrepreneurship, thereby benefitting both commercial and small-scale subsistence farmers.

Public-private partnership: combining strengthsFTA is initiated and coordinated by Larive International, a company which offers business development advisory services towards companies doing business in emerging markets. participants in the consortium include Wageningen University & Research centre (Wageningen UR), Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), Fishion, The Roost, Nutreco, Almex, Dinnissen, Holland Aqua, Ottevanger, VIQON, Unga Farm Care, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Dutch Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya.

The past years have proven how successful co-operations between the horticulture sectors of Kenya and the Netherlands can be. The combined knowledge of Green Farming members and East African partners has elevated production levels at several businesses in Kenya to a new high, and sustainability has been enhanced. The end result is a higher and better quality return, and an efficient and sustainable use of the available resources.

Green Farming is a program that aims to connect the horticultural networks of The Netherlands and Kenya by setting up joint activities, projects or co-operations in the areas of research, development and production. The Green Farming consortium consists of over 25 leading companies in horticulture technology and Wageningen University and Research Centre. The guiding principle behind Green Farming is equality. Members of Green Farming do not deliver knowledge, they share it. Together, with their partners in East Africa, they aim to find solutions that best fit local conditions. Solutions that meet the demands of the market, are easy to use, durable and affordable.

Entrepreneurs and organizations from Kenya have the best knowledge about the local conditions, the climate differences in the various regions and at different altitudes, the economic and political developments and norms, and the infrastructure. Dutch entrepreneurs and organizations can add their knowledge on sustainable (growing) systems, greenhouses, post-harvest technologies, logistics, and trade, environmentally friendly crop protection and the conditions that the international retailers set on sustainability and food safety. The entrepreneurs and organizations that are affiliated to Green Farming can be found worldwide. Using their practical experience and broad expertise they apply their knowledge and products worldwide to fit local circumstances. Green Farming combines the best of both worlds.

KONEKSIE is a social venture that developed a motorcycle taxi for the East African market that is reliable and safe.

KONEKSIE, founded in 2011, presents a business case that includes a unique and newly designed African motorcycle, a set of services to improve safety and reliability, and on top of that solid commercial potential. We believe that social impact and business can be mutually reinforcing. Two years of comprehensive research and the involvement of hundreds of people in Kenya, our first East African market, has helped us to crystallise the opportunity for KONEKSIE. It relates to the facts that:

• in Kenya, the boda boda only manages to fill part of the rising demand for mobility because it is not reliable and safe. Demand for affordable mobility outstrips supply, hundreds of thousands of people are still designated to a daily commute on foot.

• hospitals in East Africa report up to 50% of surgical interventions to be related to boda boda incidents. As such, safety is both a macro and micro level concern.

• boda boda drivers, or operators, are micro-entrepreneurs making their daily livings by providing customers with transportation.Lacking the prospect of motorcycle ownership, growing their businesses is out of their reach.

KONEKSIE’s business model contributes to improving these matters by providing opportunities for boda boda operators unparalleled in the sector: ownership of the only motorcycle ever designed for transportation in the African context, the boda boda. With our local partners we assure the required financing, proper licensing, insurance and training, because safety and reliability depend on both driver and motorcycle.

To meet the demand this generates, KONEKSIE will produce as much of its motorcycle in Africa as possible, creating jobs and transferring knowledge. KONEKSIE BV registered a Kenyan limited (KONEKSIE East Africa Ltd) in January 2013.
