This is the final set of reference questions for the course. The answer for these 25questions from three sources of information ( print , Buley Databases, and the Internetquestions)

1. What is the name of the archbishop of Canterbury?

The analysis of the question- This is a ready reference question that need to be answered by a subject

biography (religion) or General biographies that provide an access to itscontent by the persons title or job or the subject that could be related to thatperson, thats because we dont know the name of that person, that way wecould easily search for the archbishop of Canterbury which is a religiousleader or position.

- Since the question didnt specify if we need to know the current archbishop ofCanterbury or just one of them, Ill assume that we need the current name, sowe have to search for it in the latest edition of the print biographies availableat the library, and because most of the libraries now dont have the latest

print edition of most of their reference books, and they prefer to get theelectronic version of these reference, it could be possible to search for theelectronic version of one of the biography resources.

- Because I dont have an access to the latest edition of the suitable Generalbiography resources like The Cambridge biographical encyclopedia, or eventheNew encyclopaedia Britannica, and also there is no access to one of thesubject or selective print biographies like Encyclopedia of Religion, or WhosWho in Religion, or Christianity, Ill try to search for the answer in theelectronic biographical resources in Buley databases to get the name of thearchbishop of Canterbury.

- I tried Credo searching box using these terms (current archbishop of

Canterbury) I limited the answer to biographies but I couldnt get the answerusing these terms, it was a long list of biographic resources, but I couldnt notdefine the current one between them, so I tried the Credos encyclopedias,the first hit gave the answer through The Hutchinson UnabridgedEncyclopedia, when I checked the answer I found a link to site of thearchbishop of Canterbury, that site made me sure that Rowan Williams is thecurrent archbishop of Canterbury.

- There is another encyclopedia has a clear answer to this question which is TheColumbia Encyclopedia

2. What University offered the first bibliographycourse and when?

The analysis of the question

- This ready reference question could be answered by a fact booklike the Famous Firsts Facts book. As I know that Melvil Deweyestablished the first courses of library science, in America, so I figured outthat this American first fact book will be a suitable place to search for theanswer to that question .This work presents 8549 firsts in Americanhistory, from the earliest known human activity to in the United States tocurrent social, cultural, and scientific developments, up to and through thedate of this copy of the book( 2006)- Since that reference book is arranged alphabetically under the mainsubject headings, then sub heading, so I had to search its subject indexfor the word Bibliography which could referred me to the right pageinside the book.- I searched there but I couldnt find the answer to that question inthat edition, I found out about many first course in Book, biology and alsothe first library school was 1887in NY, but no first bibliography course.

The Answer:

One of my classmates found the answer in the edition of 1966, butI have no access to that old edition, her answer is The first

bibliography course was offered in 1878 by the University ofMichigan, at Ann Arbor. Raymond Cazallis Davis, the librarian, gavea lecture once a week during November and December.

I think that answer might not be correct, because the first libraryschool was in 1887, at Colombia University in NY.

3. When and where was Senator Edward Kennedy born? I need some

information about his life.


- This is one of the ready reference questions, I need a one of the nationalbiographies( because I know that person is American) if I dont know that Icould search for world biography that could be searched easily by the namealphabetically ( Kenney, Edward) If we need just short biography it isavailable in lots of general biographies, like The Cambridge biographicalencyclopedia , the average length of each entry is 70 words, and few entrieshad taken a full page. Also we could find the answer in one of Who whoGeneral biographies, or in America. We have to choose the most recent

biography to get all information about his life.- If we need more depth information, there are Almanac of American Politics.It is a standard work in its field. In addition to offering overview articles ofindividual states and their congressional representation, the entries includephotos and thumbnailsketches of the contemporary governors, congressmenand senators. But there is no available print copy , and the electronic onlineversion is available to subscriber only.

- I chose this biography Who's Who in America. to search for Kennedy, Edward(Senator) the last print edition is not available in libraries; so Ill have accessto it through Buley library, its one of Credos biographies, Through Credos

searching box I entered these terms( Kennedy, Edward, Senator) and limitedthe search result to biographies , I received a list of entries, from differentbiography resources one of them Whos Who in America , and Whos Who inthe world, they both have the same entry about him in (231 words) and this isthe longest entry about him comparing to other biographies and encyclopediasthat listed information about him. By the way there is no online biography thatmentioned any updated information about his death this year

- This is a ready-reference question. It could be answered by a

guidebook, handbook, or manual that provides us with

information about different types of writing styles, or how to

prepare a business document or other document in different

subject.

- As we evaluated manuals and handbooks reference book, I

think the The Chicago manual of style is the best manual to look for the

answer, it is the essential guide to writing and the publication process for

authors, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copyrighters, designers, and

publishers in any field.

- I searched through the index for the word minute , I found it minute (of the

meeting) It referred me to section 15/ 279, there I found the answer

LISA, or LISTA, these are the specialized bibliographic resources

in the library & information sciences. we could search only

through the library databases like EBSCO for any list of articles in

these indexes which also could referred us to a full text of these

articles beside the abstracts through the period from 2004-2009.

The analysis of the question What type of question is, what resource is

- This question is a ready-reference question. It can be

answered by a dictionary. We can look up the definition of

both word and see the difference between them. There are

many dictionaries available in the library databases at Buley.

The selected resource and why

I searched Credo database for its dictionaries, it has different dictionaries, and

can search any of them.

I also tried Oxford dictionary through the library databases. Its a reliable

dictionary for English word.

The search Strategy Terms Search statement with search terms

- I searched both word together ( device , Contrive) to see is there is any

dictionary combines the meaning of both word together , I received the first

hit from The Macquarie Dictionary, its for the definition of contrive, and

it mention the word device in one of the meaning.

- I tried to search for the meaning of device in the same dictionary The

Macquarie Dictionary.hat could compare between different words as easy as I

thought.

- I tried Oxford dictionary to make sure that my explanation to the difference

between both word are right and did search for the definition of both word and

get the conclusion

- I compare between the two sources meanings and found an answer from my

point of view.

This bibliographic question could be answered from any bibliographic resources

that list information about published book one of bibliographic resources in

Buley databases.


Book index with review is one of EBSCO databases bibliographic resources

could be helpful to find the information we need to answer that Question. It is

one of the best bibliographic resources. Book in print didnt have the answer for

that question, although it suppose to be better in answering the book available in

the market.


- I entered these search terms African Writers series into the searching box in

that Book Index.

- I received many title of this series books, All these books are by African

writers, and the seriess publisher is Heinemann. All the prices and other

information available at that index too, but I found most of these titles are out-

of- print , so youll not be able to buy them if there are no available copies, so

if you just want to buy any books by African writers, we could search thesame series for books by the same African Author, well have books by the

same African writers name even if they are not published in the same series.

- I clicked on one name of those authors to find another in print books for him

and I chose one of them.

- I selected the literature resources center powered by Gale cengage learning

from this database which includes biographies and other resources about

Literature. Its the suitable place to collect information about literary award

offered to Jack Vance. This database includes also articles and criticism about

literature works.


- Through Buley Library databases I chose the literature resources center

- I entered just the name of (Jack Vance) into the searching box, I limited the

results to biographies . a used the basic search, I received 2 biographic

resource that give information about him.- Ive just clicked on the first one which has a clear answer to that question and

lists of the AWARD that he had over the years and they all for his literature

This is a bibliographic question needs to be answered using one of the

bibliographies available in the databases of Buley library,


I think Book index with reviews from (EBSCO) will be good one, its easy

searchable and gives complete and organized information better than Book in

print (Bowker). because it has reviews I could recognize more information about

these books and if they are by African writers or not, also, if they are short

stories or not.


I used the advanced searching to look forCyprian Ekwensi AND short

stories first I received two books included short stories for him.

Because the patrons ask for African writers books too , I tried to search for

African writers AND short stories, I received many of them. I chose two

examples as found in the answer.

I will like to the full title of the article and where I can get a copy of the article.



This bibliographic question needs to be answered by an index that compile

bibliographic information about library and information sciences which is

supposed to be the specialist subject for a librarian to write about. Also I need to

search for the name of that distant librarian among the list of the librarians of

Buley library through their web page at Buley. By knowing the name it would

be easier to find the answer quickly, if I cant find that through the title only.

Also that will limit the result if that title is repeated or used by other authors.


The suitable database available for that subject is : Library, Information Science& Technology Abstracts, it hosted by EBSCO. There I could search for anypublished articles in the field.

If I need to know the name of that distant librarian I cold search , the reference

librarian biography at Whos Who in the Reference Department, they havelist of the reference librarian I could search for the distant librarian name amongthem.


- I found the name of the distant librarian from looking up Whos Who in

reference department.

- I search through LISTAs searching box using the terms of the title Second

Life only, then I didnt receive the right answer, I used the advanced search

by adding her name Rebecca Hedreen, AND the Title word, and that was

easier even if I found the than trying search by only the title,
