Reducing Costs with LiDAR
Problem• Although physical LiDAR scans costs have significantly reduced over the last
few years, they have limited use without labor intensive data tagging.
Goals• Improve economic value for nuclear facilities• Open method for import into analysis tools
LiDAR Project Overview
light detection and ranging (LiDAR)
Basic• Virtual walkdown• Measurement tools
Tagged Model• Component lookup• Maintain piping and
instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
• Spatial relationships• Data export
Use Cases
Industry Partner – Environmental Intellect (Ei)• Web based• Photo or point cloud• Markers/Tags• P&ID features• Group or Team layers• Measurement tools• Secure Data
3D Visualization
Input Nuclear Data
• List components for current zone.• Four click process
Initial Simplified Tagging
LiDAR scan• Switchgear room• Pump room
Database import• PDMS• FRANX
Tagging process
Est. cost $50–$200K
Industry Testing
Not actual industry scan
Computer Vision• Identify label text• Sort components
Goal• Tagging reduced to < 10 sec avg.
Assisted Tagging (2022)
Model Import Example (2022)
• Use API for data retrieval • Auto generate room boundaries• Import components into FRI3D
