Well done Mr. Mitraby Mohd Azad (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:18 AM

This is really good to know that Mr. Mitra denied the existence of black hole long time back which even Hawking is admitting today. Talkingabout black hole is like talking about nothing and you can talk forever on such topic with some assumptions.

The irony with Indian(s) scientists is that they don't beleive in publicity or you can say they don't get the right media coverage.Patenting/documenting the information is also a problem. Second biggest problem is the jealousy/ leg pulling attitude among the colleagues. You'll hardly get people who'll support you without worrying about the credit rather they'll leave no stone unturned to stop you continue the goodwork.

Let's hope the Mr. President comes to know about the incident and Mr. Mitra is put back on the research that he was doing ever since

A direct thanks to Mr.Mittra about his relativity papers, even though i am not a physics person by myself...but this artcle makes us understandthat even with infrastructure present in Inida, human talent is still very high.

it is discouraging to see attitude of indian government towards the same and still no recognition has come forward for this issue.

You have made us proud and have given us hope that all is not lost. Now the action -plan needs to be like this

    1. The Indian Media should praise this acheivement and make Mitra a celebrity2. The Stupid babus in the BARC who do not have the scientific attitude of looking at different theories with an open mind should be fired &exiled immediately3. A science innovation department should b e formed under the ageis of the President of India Dr. APJ AK & Mitra should be made to headthat department. the sole purpose of this department should be to publish all the theories by all the scientifically inclined people and work inthe direction of making them practical. The motto of this dept should be - THE ONLY STUPID IDEA IS THE ONE THAT DID NOT COME TOYOUR MIND.

It is great to know that it was an Indian who opposed Hawkings theory. His work was accepted as he was a highly renowned physicist, andthe idea of Abhas Mitra's colleagues ditching him shows the fear that we disply to bring out ideas. If the idea is projected before the scientificcommunity with a solid proof backing it and what is there to fear.Hope Mitra's work is taken as an example and other scientists come out of their shell to bring out their challenges to the scientists from thewest. Similarly the greatness of Indian mathematics from Aryabhatta to baudhayana to saayana, who proposed a number of mathematicaltheoroms, well before the time of pythagoros etc, should be published. This would give indians a sense of pride.

First of congratulations to Abhas Mitra and secondly an apology for being in ignorance of the fact that such groundbreaking work andthought process was underway in our country.Maybe now BARC and the government will do justice by him and honour him as he so rightly deserves.

Forward | Report abuseAbhas Mitra's paper about black holes.by Prakash (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 09:55 AM

Nothing surprising considering that most 'scientists' in the Indian academia are more keen on pleasing West than finding the truth.

There is a way the Nation can check this. Why not give Abhas a Padmabhushan? I invite all the rediff readers to promote this idea.(Incidentally, I don't know Abhas or any other theoretical physicists). Now that Stephen Hawking himself has debunked the existence ofblack holes, Indian scientists will be more willing to recognise Abhas.

been avoided since it is the general reaction of the scientific community to any change. Though they say they stand fo r logical reasoningand progressive thinking, I think these guys are as retrograde as any. The history of science is replete with stories of castigated visionaries. At least Mitra is fortunate that his stand is vindicated in his life time

Though i am not an astrophysicist, what i felt is that it is a case of jeleousy which is a common phenomenon. The fact that ,even Hawkingdidnot get back and later presenting the same thing in a conference in which even the review board didnot rivewe the paper earlier becauseit was a last minute request from the eminent scientist and just going by his figure, they granted permission is again ridiculous. Again I cansay that Dr Mitra's work will definitely get the recognition it deserves,i am sure about that. Again India is a country where u find dirty politicsat every spheres of life. That is the reason why novelists like Dr. Hargovind Khurana didnot acknowledge his Indian background behind hissuccess. I would congratulate Dr. Mitra for his unparallel effort and would pray to God that he get his appropriate recognition. Its a chance forIndia to payback.

    Thanx

True and sad plight of Indian scientistsby Arya (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:37 AM

This instance points out the plight of Indian researchers in India, who are still besotted with the colonial hangover that the British (in general, the west) is always right. Even if a colleague of theirs points out some anomaly in a western theory, this is the reception that they get.

Another sad instance is the high-handedness of Arthur Eddington (as pointed out in the article) towards S. Chandrasekhar. Interestingly, thisincident has also been pointed out in Hawking's "A Brief History of Time".

Moreover, this only underlines the greatness of Einstein who gladly accepted Satyen Bose's theory and translated it (into German) and had itpublished.

Its highly unfortunate especially the treatment metted out to Mr.Mitra. My hearty congratulations to him and though his work didnt get therequired recognition it deserved, I am sure it has pulled up many questions in the much believed theory of Black holes and that indeed it is ofgreat pride for all of us that its an Indian who has dared to contradict such an established theory.Hats off to him and I am proud to be anIndian.

Dear Indians,This particular bit of news comes as no surprise to me. We Indians are very good at doing science, but sadly, hopeless at recognising thesame, especially when it comes from an Indian.Stories of scientists not getting recognition they deserved in our country, but who eventuallywent out of India to become world-renowed persons is a cliche now. No wonder bright young minds are leaving our country by the minute!

This is an irony that no one is supporting a genius, is it just because he is an Indian, had the same thing told to us by Mr. Hawkings peoplewould have welcomed the same thing. Please guys he is an Indian gutsy genius. Keep going Mr. Mitra we all are with you.

The man of inspirationby jyothirmayam (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:25 AM

Dear Sir,First, let me congratulate Dr.Abhas on his REVOLUTINARY thesis that challenged the Hawking's flawed theory and has been eventaullyACCEPTED.It's the same old story that happens at various of points of time in history. But ultimately what triumphs is human endeavor to unravel thetruth.Against all odds, the great seekers of truth always challenge the the ignorant majority. For a such a poineering work, he got the treatment that none can forget. It's sad that great scientists often rely upon their own means forpath-breaking discoveries. And in this case, BARC has done immense injustice and i nsult to a poineer.Personally I am proud of being a fellow Indian, whose country has produced such genius. This saga must open the eyes of Indians at large tocreate conducive atmosphere for research rather than trying stiffle it.All the so-called thinkers/physicists are of no consequence that's amplyproved in the case of Dr.Abhas.He is a gem for India. We have so many such poineers, but are we interested to derive benefit from theirresearch? The answer is a DISMAL NO.I,for one, strongly think that the present attitude of ours must change.Ultimately, the tuth prevails!

This is great that someone from India took on Stephen Hawkings but it is a pity instead of finding the reason behind Mitra's theory, weIndians disregarded it. Well, now when Stephen himself has said that his 25 year old theory was wrong, what is expected from Mitra.

I would ask Mitra to work on his findings a little bit more and give his own theory on black holes.

There are quite a few people who dare to challenge such type of theories.

    Congratulation Mitra...

i'm a layman in physics or astronomy but subjects like blackholes fascinate me. when i first read the title of the article i thought Mitra anotherone who questioned an eminent personality like hawking just for the sake of publicity. after going through th article i was proven wrong. theworld needs minds like Mitra who not only dare to think different but also have the confidence and guts to express it openly. as we havenoticed from the history that whosoever propounds something different is first criticized then eventually accepted. this feature has been thepart of the game for centuries. and what a fantastic feature of science that every established theory seems to be the ultimate truth until somedaring soul questions it. the abstract science of space-time will keep musing generations and generations of intellectual minds...

This is not the first time that something like this had happened to people who propose ground breaking theories..

Mitra should remember the ordeal that Galileo went through at the hands of the church and consider him fortunate.

I think Mitra deserves a public acknowledgement from none other than Hawking himself for having corrected his ideas about black holes.

History has showed that scientists of yore were all humility personified. I hope Hawking belong to this category.

Hawkings is a great theoretician. But that shouldn't have been the reason to shun discussion that could disprove his theory. Research isabout finding answers and problems, about proving and disproving - fundamental research is never foolproof and I'm sure Hawkings isscientist enough to accept the flaws in his theory. As much as it is hard to get out of the fascinating idea of black holes, theories need to beperfected to be able to explain the many many mysteries of the universe.I hope Dr.Mitra gets the encouragement and facilities he requires to further his work, somewhere in the world where people aren't afraid to'make success' rather than just follow success.

I wold like to 'console' Mr. Mitra in my small little way, by recalling what Lord Krishna told Arjuna : "Karmanya-eve Adhikarastey, MaaPhaleshu Kadachin". He will perhaps now receive the 'glory' which was long overdue to him; this is life! Nothing succeeds like success!! Ihope that instead of basking his ego in this glory, he will take it as God's Grace & continue with his good work.

I wish him many more laurels for himself & the country. This is how it was destined to be; for nothing can happen without the blessings of theDivine Will.

The fact that intense radiation had been found emanating from all collapsing stars shows that the theory of event horizon is false and pureconjecture.According to yogic science too this is illogical. A sound or thought or energy wave produced remains in the universe of sound, Shabda Brahma, for ever. It can be perceived by the mind on performing dharana on that packet of energy. So a sufficiently subtle mind cannot be blocked fromreaching the information under all circumstances. This only means that either destruction of information or having an horizon beyond whichnothing, including the yogic mind, cannot penetrate is utterly, not just illogical, but banal. The fact is yogic seers have time and time againshown that it is possible for the self-consciousness to reach dimensions beyond the time-space continuum and experience the unchangingReality, the Super-Conscious All Knowing state, and return to the self-conscious state. Unfortunately, modern science, bound to the outwardsense organs and oblivious of the mind instrument, has to take many many faltering steps to even glimpse the ultimate Reality.

Stephen Hawking is an over-rated prodigy of the flawed modern science.

We keep chanting names of Indian for their global recognition living outside India, but we just cannot recognize the talent which we haveinside our home. God knows! when will we get the confidence of world beaters in any field??Sounds stupid but shame to us for not promoting the theory by Indian...media are you still sitting with Tendulkar????

This is yet another vindication of the Indian intellect in the areas of pure science. Bravo Abhas Mitra! May his tribe increase!!! While it is amoment of great pride for us Indians and for physics in general, it is a sad relection on the state of our self-esteem wherein we needacknowledgement from the West (read "the White Man") in any sphere of existence whether be it our food, culture, movies, science etc.Any proposition will have 3-dimesions to it viz. "Yes", "No" or "Maybe"..what is deplorable is the lack of discussion on Mr. Mitra's theory andour inability to question set mores and beliefs. I personally believe that it is a function of our conditioning wherein we have been taught toaccept, without questioning. This "servile mentatility" leads to the proliferation of "Yes Men" (women still dare to question, very often!)whoare scared to be different. However, before much damage is caused let us encourage the budding Mitras in our country to question, to challenge and to fail..so that wecan succeed!Cheers!Rajesh

They do forget that major researchers have been done long b ack in BCyears on Science, Stars, Medicines & surgery long back these white skin had formed a civilised society.Did we forget Mr. Ramanujam who gave us Matematical wonder letter ZERO. He was goaded for his work International & was touted a Heroin India much later than that after which many of his articles were published & acclaimed by socalled Indian Intellegentia.for eg I have developed molecules/ sp. chemicals for Oil & Gas sector which have beaten products of MNC hollow in lab & plant t rials, yet tosee takers. Our scientist are only after one thing - Scouting for talent, stealing & publishing their work as their own,Political mileages & favourism, vendetta, lucrative transfers & balance in actual research. All credit to Mr. Mitra for his outstanding work. The lack of appreciation and credit which he duly deserves , especially from hiscontemporaries and colleagues in India, is indeed a shame. I sincerely hope Mr. Mitra's efforts receive the commendation from the Indianscientific community, much the same way as he has received praise from scientists the world over.

The persons who sidelined him, without so much as even reading his work, do not deserve any respect.

He should get the recognition he deserves, and the media should play its part in projecting his work.

Such incidents should not occur in future, if the spirit of science is to grow in India.

Hawking is a pioneer in his work that doesn't mean whatever a expert says is right and you cant question him. It happened when Tesla tookEdison,Bell took Elisha.

The world will definetely take Abhas Mitra and his works in good terms.

It is because of this criticism and discouragement many Indians are leaving India and researching outside in US and UK.

I solemnly urge my Indian community - If you cant help or encourage a person leave it,atleast dont hurt him.

Congratulations to Abhas Mitra for his success.

the incident of isolation of Mitra at BARC shows that despite enormous success of Indian scientific community, anything and anyoneconfronting conventional wisdom is still ostracized and cut out. We are still not ready to challange the world with faith in ourselves. Theimportance of suspiscion can not be underestimated, and without suspiscion, the creed of science would itseld vanish, but what is requiredis constructive criticism and not isolation.

The premier colleges in Kolkata are allhappy hunting grounds of the caders of CPM, not to mention about the schools and colleges in the districts. BJP/RSS will celebrate anything in honour of mitra'svictory now? will they block parliament now that Indian scientist was insulted inspite of good work?this shows that no matter who is in power in India scientists cant be taken as first rate at par with international stadard.we indians are notconfident enough to feel self esteem because its not taught since childhood.RSS wants false self esteem but ignores present days lifestories

Kudos to Abhas Mitra and my sincere congratulations. He is one of those independent thinking people on the lines of Ramanujam, Ramanand Chandrashekar etc...Its a shame that BARC HAD to show its fantastic hypocracy and intellectual dishosty along with its penchant for blindly aping the west. Ican't imagine colleagues shying away from Mr Mitra, because he questioned Hawkins and proposed a counter proof. Rather than helpingMitra prove/disprove Hawkins, castigating him!! Gosh! It cant get any worse. Can it?God knows how many opportunities and intellectuals we have lost and cost India because of such intellectual dishonesty.

Indians are insuperable in the art of suppressing their own men and insulting great men. This is what immediately came up in my mind. Thebasic reason for this pathetic condition is our inferiority complex and our traditional mental slavery to the "white skinned masters". Themother of all this nonsensical behaviour is the education we receive right from our schools, followed by the education offered by ouruniversities, the informal education in the form of newspapers, magazines, tv channels, cinema, etc. Especially the communists, the"secularists" and the so-called intelligentsia in our country are the most irresponsible humans the world has ever produced. They takeimmense pride and pleasure in insulting our indigenous culture and customs. According to them anything Indian is inferior and barbaric. These people can't digest the fact that Indians deserve the right to live with self-respect. They are determined to nip any feeling of self-respect among our people even when it is a bud.

No wonder a country smaller than one of our states ruled over us! Be it science, medicine, IT, or business, wealways bow to the "supremacy" of the West. When will we ever wake up! Dear Mr. Mitra,First of all, you should learn the history of General Theory. Black hole solutions of Einstein's equations were found by Schwarzschild longbefore Hawking was born,as a matter of fact Schwarzscild found the solutions within a year of publication of Einstein's revolutionarypaper.Hawking's main contribution is the elucidation of the properties of black hole ( along with Beckenstein) and the discovery that blackholes can radiate if quantum mechanical effects are taken into account. This is called Hawking radiation. This is not possible in classicalphysics. However Hawking radiation has not been so far.Observationally many black holes been found in recent years. So the statement"black holes do not exist" is sheer nonsense!I strongly advise you to learn the theory properly before making absurd claims. I am not surprised that Narlikar and others have not botheredto debate with you. They have more useful things to do.Unfortunately, many Indians want to become famous by putting forward meaningless claims and "challenging" well-established ideas insteadof working hard and discovering new phenomena or producing new ideas.-B.Banerjee

    Dear Mr BB,

1.Please read the original rediff article carefully. Abhas showed that Black Hole's existance would invalidate GeneralTheory of Relativity. Do not jump to conclusions such as Abhas does not know General Theory of Relativity!

2.>Hawking radiation has not been so >far.Observationally many black holes been found in >recent years.

How are these BHs found? Any idea?

Your statement can be interpreted as : The so called black holes are not exactly so. Don't you think this is what preciselyAbhas meant?

3.>So the statement "black holes do not exist" is sheer >nonsense!

Do you understand that GTR should be harmonised with Quantum Mechanics?

4.>...and "challenging" well-established ideas instead >of working hard and discovering new phenomena or >producingnew ideas.

Abhas pointed out that old ideas are contradictory! What's wrong with it? Which idea you think is well established?

5.>I am not surprised that Narlikar and others have not >bothered to debate with you. They have more useful >things todo.

Kindly refrain from such abarrent remarks. You are not personal assistant of Dr Naralikar or others!!

I throughly believe in Equal Oppertunites as this is the way the world should behave for a safer and better world.

a platform for disscussion should be uniform for all scientific and political disscussion, congrats to the scientist who took to Hawking, It was a

straight froward defect and it took so much of fuss and descrimination to acknowledge the flaw in the thoery.

My sincere congradulation to Dr. Abhas Mitra for moral victory by tolerating descrimination from internaional and national scientist but stillstand by his thesis.

Which only goes to prove that in this world NAME counts, and not authentic ideas or views. Stephen Hawking propounded a theory aboutblackholes some 30 years back, only TO RECANT the same recently. If someone like Abhas Mitra or some other NAMEless astro-physicist

had done that, people would have ridiculed him and taken him to task for taking them for a ride. But, that is how the world is. Poor Mitra. Iunderstand how he feels.

That is great stuff. But let us take it as a beginning. People in India who are in power, I mean positions in research organizations should takethis as a lesson, a path-breaker, in which it has been demonstrated that there is no such thing as abolute right.

Every piece of information should be put to a strict test and that too with an open mind irrespective of the SOURCE which generates such aninformation. In research studies, too much importance is unduly given to who generates the information which leads to an illogical bias andthat is dmaging to the progress of science.

Let there be INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM in the world. Such a thing will lead to the development of new concepts which would makemankind move in a desirable direction. Let there be openness. Let us all enjoy this marvellous condition of human society where everybodyis given an equal right to think, express and present the ideas and which can be debately on the basis of the intrinsic worth of the informationand not pre-judged on the basis of 'achieved' position of the source of information. That will herald the dawn of a new era of human
