In the street, a big truck was barreling along.” The mother paused, her face betraying old emotions. “I could see that Charles and the truck would collide in front of our driveway.” Charles was only a few steps from the edge of the driveway and his ball h ad already bounced onto the road. “I felt helpless. I was in the doorway, frozen in terror. And Charles was a moment away from being run over. I heard a voice, my own, scream, Charles stop!’” Pausing, she said, “Charles froze in place as if struck by lightning. His ball bounced under the truck. And the truck never slowed down.” I asked the mother why Charles stopped so suddenly and she said her son was be- ing obedient. “I taught Charles to stop pulling his sister’s hair. My persistent discipline with the small things saved Charles’ life that day.” A good parent disciplines their children; a good God disciplines his children too. A good mother and father are concerned their children learn to obey them; a good God is deeply concerned with this too. Why? In the Creator’s mind, the good of the world is tied to justice, peace, generosity, humility, patience, joy and love. The world is intended to be a place where virtue reigns, where people can be happy and free, and without fear and pain. But the world is not that kind of place. The good God, the God of love, cannot simply let this stand. So, he sends prophets to remind his people of God’s vision for the world. And he ultimately sends his Son. A well-respected mother in my parish once told me a story. She was playing ball

with her oldest son, Charles, in the driveway of their home on a sunny afternoon

about four years ago. He was aged five at the time. Her phone rang suddenly and

she ran inside. Gone for a moment, when she came back through the doorway she

dropped the phone in horror, her son was chasing the ball toward the street.

“It was like slow motion,” she said. “I saw the red ball bouncing along with Charles a

few feet behind, arms outstretched, running as fast as he could. In the street, a big

truck was barreling along.”

The mother paused, her face betraying old emotions. “I could see that Charles and

the truck would collide in front of our driveway.” Charles was only a few steps from

the edge of the driveway and his ball h

ad already bounced onto the road.

“I felt helpless. I was in the doorway, frozen in terror. And Charles was a moment

away from being run over. I heard a voice, my own, scream, ‘Charles stop!’” Pausing,

she said, “Charles froze in place as if struck by lightning. His ball bounced under the

truck. And the truck never slowed down.”

I asked the mother why Charles stopped so suddenly and she said her son was be-

ing obedient. “I taught Charles to stop pulling his sister’s hair. I taught Charles to stay

in his bed after lights out. I taught Charles to put down his toy and come to dinner

when I called him. Charles learned to heed my voice. My persistent discipline with

the small things saved Charles’ life that day.”

A good parent disciplines their children; a good God disciplines his children too. A

good mother and father are concerned their children learn to obey them; a good God

is deeply concerned with this too. Why? Because the welfare, the happiness, the

good of the children are at the center of their thoughts.

Love wants the good of the other for the other’s own sake, say theologians. In the

Creator’s mind, the good of the world is tied to justice, peace, generosity, humility,

patience, joy and love. The world is intended to be a place where virtue reigns,

where people can be happy and free, and without fear and pain.

But the world is not that kind of place. The good God, the God of love, cannot simply

let this stand. So, he sends prophets to remind his people of God’s vision for the

world. And he ultimately sends his Son. The voice of the Son — especially when

God speaks of justice and judgment — is the voice of God’s love. Listen to his voice!

Gospel

Matthew 21:33-43

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, ‘Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third.

Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. “They will respect my son” he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:

It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the key-stone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see? ‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.’

Mass intentions this week

A prayer for each day

At some time during your day, not necessarily the same time each day you can commune with God and humanity for a few moments with the help of a fresh prayer each day.

Go to the App Store or to Google Play and simply search for ‘Bread 4 Today’ and then download the app.

VARIETY CONCERT

A Variety Concert will be held on Sunday 22 October at Aranmore Primary School Gym, 20 Brentham Street, Leederville. It will run from 1.30 - 4.30 pm. safe Church - safe precinct

Everyone matters. They matter to God and they matter to us. Each human being is a person created in God’s image and each has inalienable rights. All of us here at the monastery share a commitment to safeguard adults and children alike. “I am with you always even till the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20)

October - month of the Rosary

If the Rosary helps you to pray, praying it each day this month will be a significant way for you to remain in communion with God. If the whole Rosary is not something you and your family can mange, maybe you can pray together just one decade each day.

If the Rosary is a form of prayer that does not help you to pray, try and find a way that does help you - maybe reading the Scriptures, or perhaps remaining in silence while sitting down or going for a walk. Jesus invites us to “pray always” - any way, any place any time. Prayer is the raising of the heart and mind to God. It is also living in joy and gratefulness, hope and integrity. Heart and mind prayer gradually leads to prayer in outreach to others or vice versa.

Blessing of families and children

St Gerard was born in Italy in 1726. He grew up understanding that God’s love was boundless. He knew this in his prayer, in his mission among the poor and in his work among families. His feast is on Monday, October 16.

At all Masses Saturday/Sunday October 14/15 there will be the blessing of families and children with the relic of St Gerard. Everyone is family so everyone is welcome.
