Celebrations

WEEKLY HOME LEARNING

Over the week, please try to complete at least 3 ‘starter’ and 3 ‘Main’ tasks for English and Maths. Please complete a daily fitness task and at least 2 other challenges by Friday.

MAIN ENGLISH TASKS MAIN MATHS TASKS

MAIN READING TASKS MAIN WRITING TASKS This week you are going to focus on reasoning about place value. Task 1 – 100 Square missing number puzzles. Look at Resource 4 (print it or copy the puzzle onto paper) You need to start from one of the numbers that you are given and try to work out the missing numbers. Year 1 – Fill in the missing numbers from the puzzle. Think about 1 more, 1 less than the number to help you. Year 2 - Can you work out the missing numbers from each puzzle? Think about 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less to help you. Task 2 – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z8sfr82/articles/zw4g2nb watch this video and then complete the activities below it to remind yourself about place value. Now have a go at the place value task explained in Resource 5 Task 3 – Remember that we can represent the tens and ones in different ways to show the same value (number) Play this game for a bit of practise http://www.ictgames.com/sharkNumbers/mobile/ Now have a go at the problems in Resource 6. Please upload this task onto Google Classroom.

Task 1 – Reading for pleasure Muslim people across the world have recently celebrated the end of Ramadan. To find out about this celebration we would like you to read the story ‘Rameena’s Ramadan’ using the PDF link on the School Closure Learning page or in the Classwork section of Google Classroom. Ask your adult to help you if you get stuck on any words. Once you have done this, you can complete the tasks below. You could do one task each day. Task 2 – VIPERS Vocabulary Find 5 interesting words in the story. Write down what each one means. Now think of your own sentences that use the words. Infer How do you think Rameena was feeling at each stage of the story? Draw a picture of her and write her thoughts in a thought bubble You could use Resource 7 Retrieve Write as many facts as you can that you have learned about how Muslim people celebrate Eid (The end of Ramadan) from reading the story. Please upload this task onto Google Classroom. Task 3 – Comprehension Questions. Use the story to answer the questions in Resource 8 for your year group. Remember to look back at the story to help you find the answers. If you cannot print, you could read the questions on the screen and then write the answers to the questions on some paper.

Listen to the story ‘Kipper’s Birthday’ by Mick Inkpen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm1BXicbFeU Take time to talk about the story with your adult. What was the problem in the story? How was the problem resolved? Task 1 - Imagine you are going to host your own birthday party or a party for a friend. Create a mind map to plan your party. Think about: What type of party will it be? What will happen at the party? What will people wear? What decorations will you put up? What food will you give to the guests? Use the template in Resource 1 to help you if you wish. Task 2 - In the story, Kipper’s invitations didn’t give enough information. Write an invitation for your party that you planned in task 1. Make sure you tell your guests all of the information that they need to know. Have a look at Resource 2 to help you include everything you need. You can decorate your invitation to make it look attractive too. Please upload this task onto Google Classroom. Task 3 - In the story, Kipper made a birthday cake. Listen to the story again. Listen carefully to the ingredients that he puts into the cake and what he does to make it. You could pause it to listen again if you need to. Now have a go at writing some instructions/a recipe for ‘How to make Kipper’s birthday cake’. Watch this video to find out what you need to include in your instructions to make them easy to follow https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/english-ks1-ks2-how-to-write-instructions/zrvtscw

STARTER TASKS (To warm up your brain before you do a main task!)

STARTER SPELLING TASKS (10/15 minutes each) STARTER NUMBER TASKS (10/15 minutes each)

Year 1 - Using the website: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/oyAltSpellings.html (Enter the username: march20 and the password: home) Task 1 - Play ‘word sort’. Sort the words according to the correct spelling pattern that makes the sound ‘oi’ in each word. Task 2 - Play ‘phoneme spotter’. Write down all of the words that contain the ‘oi’ sound. Remember to look out for a range of graphemes. You can check to see if you spotted them all when you have finished. Task 3 - Play a rhyming game with your adult. One person needs to start by writing a word that has the oi/oy sound in it. The second needs to add to the list a word that rhymes. EG Player 1 – join, player 2 – coin. Keep going until you run out of words that rhyme and start again with a different word. EG toy. Remember, we would usually only find oi in the middle of a word and oy often, but not always appears at the end of a word. Year 2 - You are learning that some words use ‘or’ for the ‘er’ sound after a w. Word list: word, worm, work, world, worth Task 1 - Use the website https://spellingframe.co.uk/. Choose Year 2 – Rule 21. Choose ‘Spelling Tiles’ Select all of the activities and then work through them to help you learn the spellings. You could also use ‘Practice/Test’ at the end. Task 2 - Pyramid words – Choose a word from the list. Start with 1 letter, then build up the word a letter at a time to spell the whole word. Repeat for all of the words. EG w wo Task 3 – Look, cover, write, check. Copy a word from the list. Cover it and try to spell it correctly. Check and correct your spelling. Repeat for all of the words until you can spell them all.

Year 1 Task 1 – Use the 100 square on this website https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares or from Resource 3. Play a game with your adult. Each of you needs to write down 5 numbers from the square. Take turns to give clues to the other to allow them to try to guess the number. If they guess, they can colour the number their colour. If they don’t guess correctly, you colour it your colour. Clues could be EG it is larger than 14 but less than 20. Or it is 1 more than 79. Task 2 – Counting in 2s,5s and 10s. Using the 100 square again if you need to, practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as far as you can go. You could even play counting tennis with you adult. You can explain the rules! Task 3 – Using a set of small objects EG buttons, Lego bricks. Count out 10 or 20. Spread them out in front of you. Close your eyes and grab some of the objects. Open your eyes and count how many are in your hand. Can you say how many must be still on the table using your number bonds? Count and check. EG 4 in my hand, 16 on the table if the total is 20. Repeat. Year 2 Task 1 – Use TTRS to practise the times table that you are working on. Task 2 – Use the 100 square on this website https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares or from Resource 3. Or it is 10 less than 42, it is 30 more than 55 etc Task 3 – Roll a dice twice and write a multiplication calculation using the numbers. Solve the calculation. You might know the fact, you might be able to count in steps or you might need to draw an array to solve it. EG 4 x 3 = 12 If you are drawing an array, count the spots to solve it. Repeat at least 6 times

RE: Activity 1 Use this link to find out about lots of different celebrations that happen around the world https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/lets-celebrate There are also lots of different activities that you can do linked to the different celebrations. For example; you could follow the recipe and make your own delicious Onion Pakoras to celebrate Eid, make a carnival hat to take part in a carnival parade or make and decorate your Khanda flag for Vaisakhi. Activity 2 Use Espresso on the Discovery Education website. Username: student35032 Password: espresso Click on KS1 click on the RE heading on the left hand side of the screen Choose a celebration that you don’t already know much about. Watch the videos and do and activities. Compare the celebration to those that you celebrate? What is similar? What is different? You could make a fact file or presentation about the celebration that you chose.

Music: Learn to the song ‘Celebration’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWLIgjB9gGw Sing along to the song. Clap along to the steady beat. Can you add some of your own dance moves? Use the beat to help you keep in time to the music. Perhaps you could create a performance to share with your family.

Science: Dancing Raisins Investigation. If you have some fizzy lemonade, just like you would at a party you can try this fun investigation. You will need:

Tall, clear glass

Raisins

Fizzy lemonade - it won't work if the lemonade is flat

How to:

Gently pour the lemonade into the glass.

Add a few raisins and wait for a few seconds.

What's happening? Can you think and explain why the raisins do what they do? Look on this website to find out what’s happening! http://www.planet-science.com/categories/under-11s/chemistry-chaos/2012/06/dancing-raisins.aspx You could experiment with other types of food. Try pasta, popcorn or other fruit. How heavy does something have to be before it won't dance in the lemonade? Make sure you use fizzy lemonade every time! If you enjoyed this, have a look at Resource 9 for some colourful experiments that you could try.

PSHCE: Whilst you have been learning from home, you have probably been missing your friends, just like we have been missing you. Of course, even though you are spending time apart, we are all in this together. Friends never forget each other. Think about your friends that you are missing from school.

Draw a picture of you with your friends and label them.

Tell us what you like to do together with your friends.

What qualities do your friends have that make them special to you?

You could make a Little Book of Friends using Resource 10 to help you. Please upload this task onto Google Classroom.

Choose a number between 11 – 99. I chose 34. Now partition your number to show the value of the tens and ones.

The digit 3 shows there are 3 tens, or 30, the digit 4 means 4 ones. Draw a representation of your number.

I have used base 10, or chips and peas.

Now write as many facts as you can about your number. For my number, 34, I know… - 34 is 1 more than 33 but 1 less than 35. - 34 is an even number. I know this because it has 4 ones and 4 can be shared equally between 2. - 34 is greater than 27 or we could use symbols to compare 34 27 - 34 is less than 52 or 34 52 - 34 is 10 more than 24 and 10 less than 44. - I know that 34 must be a multiple of 2, because it has a 4 in the ones and multiples of 2 always

have 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0 ones. - I know that if I add 66 to 34 I will have a total of 100 using my jigsaw numbers.

Repeat this activity for lots of different numbers. Year 1s you may not know some of these facts but have a go at explaining any you do.

Here are some numbers that you could try.

We can represent the digits in a 2-digit number using any shapes or objects we want as long as we use the same picture or object for all of the tens and a different picture or object for all of the ones. It is a bit like a special code! Can you crack these codes? You don’t need to print this resource. Just write down which number has been represented and then draw your own representation of the number I have asked you to do using my code on some paper.

If = 10 and = 1

What is this number?

Draw 62 using this code.
