Letter from the Rectory Revd. Steve BateLetter from the Rectory Revd. Steve Bate

How did we get here? That’s the question we were asking ourselves while returning from our holiday. Our car’s satnav had redirected us along a new route without us noticing and there we were back on our expected route. After passing through various places we didn’t recognise, we were left wondering how did we get here?

How did I get here? Not how did I drive home to write this article but how did I come to be here as Rector of Albury, Little Hadham and Much Hadham? When I look back, I realise it’s been very much like following my satnav as I’ve sought to follow God’s leading. Along the way, God has guided me into roles I never could never have imagined.

My Christian journey began while at university and after various different jobs I settled into lecturing at Coventry University. Val and I enjoyed the youth work which we led together in a church near Leamington Spa. One Sunday, the Rector of our church suggested I should go off and get ordained. The idea left me cold! I felt that God had called me into the job I was doing at the time and also that I was called to stay in the community where we lived.

This led to an inner conviction that God’s call, at that time, was to be a Reader (also known as a Lay Reader). I spent ten years as a Reader but during that time our church held a day of prayer to discern who God might be calling to be an Ordained Local Minister. You probably guessed it – my name was suggested! An Ordained Local Minister is self-supporting and stays in their original parish.

Later on, I began to feel that God was nudging me along again. Should I focus on ordained ministry and go full-time? The full-time post to which this led was in Stratford-upon-Avon, as Associate Vicar. It came as something of a shock to discover that the Vicar I’d come to work alongside was leaving soon and I’d be covering for his role, but it was a fantastic experience for which I’m grateful.

After more than one retired clergyman, whose wisdom I valued, suggested I should consider a further move to another parish I had to take this seriously. Was God leading me into the next stage of the journey? This was what led to my arrival here – that’s how I got here.

That’s how I got here but what about you? How did you get to where you are now and where might God lead you next? You might still be thinking about even starting the Christian journey – why not have a chat with me or join one of our Alpha courses? You might have been on the Christian journey for some time but you wonder where God might lead you next. It might be into a similar role to those I enjoyed: Reader or Ordained Minister or as a Lay Leader of Worship which is a further accredited role in St Albans Diocese. It might be something totally different. Again, why not come for a chat. I’d be delighted to play my part in helping you explore where God might be leading you.

Every blessing,

Village Hall News Jan Williamson

It has been a busy month and I haven’t had a chance to set up the survey that I mentioned previously but fingers crossed for the next month’s Parish Magazine.

One major decision that our Management Committee has made since last month is that the project for refurbishment requires professional help in the shape of an architect to see us safely through the various stages of this process due to its complexity. I will keep you up to date with how this progresses.

For those of you in the village that are into yoga, there is a class coming to the Village Hall from September on Tuesday mornings, and for the more active of our residents a dance taster afternoon on Friday 14th September 3.30pm – 6.30pm. There will be more information to follow for anyone who is interested, or please email me for more info.

Remember if you want to hire the hall for a special occasion or discuss an idea that you think would be of interest to the Village Hall, we would love to hear from you. Please contact me on [email protected]

LITTLE HADHAM CRICKET CLUB . . . I reformed Little Hadham Cricket Club in 1983 with friends and work colleagues and struggled over the first few years and slowly but surely with contacts to other clubs built up a side that was actually quite good. Unfortunately we lost our home pitch at Hadham Hall when it was sold off and had to rent Manuden’s pitch; but we survived eventually, thanks to the generosity of Glaxo who offered us a site on their grounds in Millfield Lane in Little Hadham where we still play, but like many other local village sides we struggle week on week to field a side and are in danger of having to fold. The core of the club are – how can I put it ? ‘mature’ members. What we need is anyone, especially younger players, who would love to play friendly village cricket (there is nothing better than a summer’s evening hearing willow hitting leather). We welcome players of mixed ability and ages; surely there must be some of you that wouldn’t mind a game, or perhaps you know of someone who would like a chance to play, it would be a shame if Little Hadham lost this facility especially after the hard work put in by members of the club. If indeed you can help please contact me on [email protected] or phone on 01279 771641 after 6pm please. Ron Bunce

Have a Hadham.

Beavers, Cubs and ScoutsBeaversOur beavers have had great fun the last few weeks, we have been up to the woods, been on a hike, and had a mini beast hunt. We have also taken the beavers to the churchyard and done grave rubbings which they really enjoyed. As it is the end of term next week before the summer holidays we will be having a water fight finished off with a mug of hot chocolate.

Congratulations to Faye Carberry our Beaver of the year Nicola

CubsThe cubs have been outdoors a lot this month as it has been so hot in the hut. We have been practising making some of our camp food and building structures using canes and cord. Lots of interesting knots and a very successful shelter and tea towel drier created! The end of term sees us visiting ESSA for some challenging raft building and our camp at Great Amwell.

Congratulations to Rafferty Welsh our Cub of the year Mary

ScoutsThis month we have been making use of the good weather and working on map and compass work for upcoming competitions in September. At our recent AGM 3 of our scouts completed their Gold Scout Award and received this honour from our District Commissioner. We will end the summer term with a water evening at ESSA enjoying the water activities and dragon boating. Congratulations to Megan Gabriel our Scout of the year. Pearl

TALKING BOWLS . . . . . . or somethingA great day for our Bowls Open Day on Saturday 16 June - the sun shone and the hordes came. Hordes is a bit of an exaggeration but we were delighted with the turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy the experience with no one in a hurry to leave which is a good sign. So far we have recruited six new members as a result and all, along with our other new members this year, are very warmly welcome. It was also pleasing to see a number of children along with parents out there playing but no new membership from that section so far which is a shame. Hope springs eternal and parents may yet give way to the children’s wishes! The weekend friendly matches are making the most of this lovely weather with good turnouts and on Sunday 24 June we entertained Hoddesdon Bowls Club in the first leg of the annual Pamart Cup. Five teams each of four bowlers from both Clubs battled it out with Hoddesdon just coming out on top in the total score. The return leg will be away and we aim to make up that deficiency and ‘bring it home’. Always a good day with tea and drinks after. Our Vets are not finding life quite so easy over the last few games so lifting that league trophy again is not looking quite so rosy. Not over yet though. We were contemplating buying the team those magical M&S waistcoats but it seems they are not quite as magical as we need so have scrubbed the idea. The Men’s evening league teams are fighting hard but it is the Ladies who are shining having won 7 of their first 9 games, so well done to them. Are you yet tempted to become part of the scene? Come along on a Wednesday evening with flat shoes (most trainers are fine) at around 6 pm and give it a try. No cost , no obligation and the bar will be open. See yer there then! Millennium Wood News Jonathan Forgham

The wood is presently in full growth and need of some strimming. A job I shall have completed before this message reaches residents. Other simple cutting back of branches will also be undertaken whilst I also plan to replace some of the signs that have now rotted over the years.

On July 16th I was presented with a cheque for £263 from the Waitrose Community Matters scheme. Thank you to all who placed their green tokens into the Millennium Wood box. This money will help as down payment for the renewal of the pond as we need to purchase an expensive (c£650) liner so the pond becomes a permanent feature. It will offer a big boost to the bio diversity of the wood in general. Once paid for, along with 2 Magnifying posts, I can then send the receipts for this expenditure to the Stansted Airport Community grant scheme to claim our grant of £1500. This money is only released upon delivery of all expenses and has to be taken within 12 months of the grant being awarded, which was January.

I am now looking to have one Sunday morning work party to prepare the pond for the arrival of the liner. We need to do a little more digging to increase the depth and use the soil we remove to build up the sides. Also, to put aside a pile of soil to place over the edge of the liner. I shall order the liner in September and shall again require a group to help carry what will be a very heavy item down to the pond to lay it out on top of plenty of old carpet underlay so it does not puncture.

If we can get a good group together, with spades and other digging implements (forks, pick axes etc.) on Sunday 5th August I would be most grateful for assistance. A couple of hours of landscaping and digging should complete the job. Meet in the wood at 10am. However, if anyone feels super helpful I would be very pleased to hear of anyone coming along to do a little digging beforehand. Just email me ,( [email protected] ) and I will try to come along to help, too. Thank you

My last ever Parish report!

Fourteen years have just flown by and I have lots of very special memories to take with me! I would like to thank all parents, staff, governors and pupils for giving me a memorable ‘send off’, with lots of lovely comments, beautiful flowers and very generous gifts. I would also like to thank the whole Little Hadham community for all their support over the years and hope that you will make my successor, Ms Sinead Connolly, feel just as welcome.

Merci et au revoir!

We should never have a gripe about sunshine …. but here goes anyway. Oh, how I long for a bit of wet weather! As I write this, on July 18th (as always, on the very last day when all articles have to be in!), the sun is shining brightly, the grass has almost become hay, the 20+ assorted garden pots alive with colour all seem to beg for more water, and my lily-white body continues to be lily-white because I no longer sit in the sun! It happened to my Ma and it has also happened to my older sister… in our later years we just can’t bear the heat and our bodies refuse to colour up. And let’s face it, with a combination of not enjoying and not browning, why sit there and bake? If nothing else, it has made me realise that moving somewhere hot to live might be fine for the young and middle aged, but for us OAPs (how I loathe that expression!) it wouldn’t be long before I would be remembering those damp, dull days of UK summer with something akin to love!

And the nights…..even worse! Despite closed curtains, our bedroom is like a furnace. We have an overhead fan but there’s a nightly drama when I put the fan on full-bore and husband – when I’m not looking – turns it down low. This doesn’t end when we go to bed - he is known to creep out around 4am when the cool air begins to filter in, and turn the thing off…. producing more marital snarling from yours truly!

So spare a thought for me when you read this article somewhere around the start of August, because I’ll be in the south of France with my extended family ‘suffering’ temperatures probably higher than the 32 degrees we have been enduring in the UK. It all seemed such a good idea back in January when we took out a mortgage to pay for Ryanair flights in the school holidays ( parents, how do you afford it?). But now, after six weeks of non-stop sunshine, I can’t think of anything I want less!

The Hundred Parishes www.hundredparishes.org.uk

The Society is really pleased to confirm the publication of its first book - The Hundred Parishes: An Introduction. It was printed by Lavenham Press of Suffolk who have done a fine job in producing a quality hardback book with excellent reproduction of photos.

The book introduces the reader to the rich history of each village and town within the area and paints a picture of life in the Hundred Parishes up to the start of the 21st century. The book is A4 size with more than 400 pages. It includes almost a thousand photos and an extensive index. It is priced at £25 per copy.

The publication marks a significant step in the Society’s mission to raise awareness and appreciation of the Hundred Parishes, an area of 450 square miles of northwest Essex, northeast Hertfordshire and southern Cambridgeshire that is characterised by its rich and diverse heritage. It expands on the parish information already available on the Society’s website, where visitors can also download walk routes and find sources of further information and activities associated with the area’s culture, history, heritage, countryside, wildlife and conservation.

The Society’s trustees hope the book will inspire residents and visitors to further explore and appreciate the Hundred Parishes. There is so much to see. We are confident that you will enjoy the book now; and then refer to it regularly over the coming years.

Jonathon Forgham guided a group of members around Bishop’s Stortford on a beautiful June evening, accompanied by the distant cheers of England Fans in the local pubs. Many unusual

and interesting things were noted and just a few, perhaps less well known, will be highlighted here. The “gentry” used the North Door of St Michaels Church whilst every one else used the South Door, a basket high up, just inside the latter, provided bread for the needy. The choir stalls have narrow hinged seats which allowed choristers to lean back as though standing during very long sermons. The Maplesden Memorial is a poignant reminder of a family who, hoping to escape disease in London, lost 7 children to small pox in 1684/5. Nearby a little mouse was carved at the foot of the pulpit by the carpenter as his trade mark. The former Boar’s Head catered for the large fairs which took place outside and at one in particular, people drank so much beer that the riot act had to be read. The “gentry” resided in the higher and cleaner part of the town whilst horse manure and tannery waste collected in Dung Hill (renamed Devoils) Lane, after flowing down the hill and from nearby stables. The muck often piled up to extraordinary levels, making living conditions very unpleasant and unhealthy for poor people living in the slums nearby. The Bishop of London, on one of his occasional visits to his nephew, who owned what is now Coopers in the 1530s, is thought to have made use of a wooden bridge to cross discretely to the Black Lion, thus also avoiding the muck. The entrance to the former Guild of Leathermakers’ building (now Mullocks) in Water Lane can be seen to be modelled on Classical lines. We were given the rare privilege of climbing to the top of the Castle Mound (which once withstood a seige by King John) to admire the view before it is dominated by the proposed multi-storey Car Park. Rye Street once had many beer houses, as well as a brewery, to cater for the livestock market at Northgate End. Several of us finished the walk at the Half Moon in time for England’s winning goal, after noting the post box opposite where the Post Office was once located, sensibly in the heart of the town. A very good evening was much enjoyed by all who attended.

Message from your County Councillor, Graham McAndrew

Summer Break is upon usBy the time most of you read this you may be on vacation. It is completely normal that with the workload we have every day, we feel very stressed; so much that nothing would suit us better than taking a vacation to relax, whether we do it alone or in the company of our friends or our family.Have a nice vacation! Make the trip you always wanted. Go to beautiful places, go to the beach… even if you are just staying at home, have a wonderful time!!

The East Herts District Plan- Final Inspector’s ReportThe East Herts District Plan was subject to an Examination in Public, with hearing sessions held between October 2017 and January 2018, followed by a public consultation on the Main Modifications, agreed through the Examination, between February and March this year. Following this, the Inspector has issued her Final Report on the Examination of the East Herts District Plan. The report and the Schedule of Main Modifications are now available to view on the council’s website: www.eastherts.gov.uk/districtplanexamination.Copies are also available to view during office hours at the East Herts Council Offices in Hertford and Bishop’s Stortford, town council offices and in libraries across the district. The council intends to formally adopt the District Plan later this summer.Hertfordshire residents are invited to take part in a consultation on flooding in the county. Hertfordshire County Council is reviewing the county’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy, and wants to hear residents’ views by Friday 24 August. The council works alongside a number of organisations which have responsibility for tackling flooding in Hertfordshire, which can include advising residents on practical measures they can take to protect themselves and their property. The draft revised strategy includes: • New proposals for working with community based groups.

• A commitment to publish the best available surface water flood risk data.

• Measures to support individuals to manage their own flood risk.

• Clarification of the circumstances under which the county council will investigate flooding.

• A new approach for helping prioritise flood risk management schemes.

• Updated policies relating to drainage.

Half of young people want electric cars Half of young people in the UK would like to own an electric car – compared with just a quarter of their parents, a survey by the AA suggests. It comes as the Government has announced a target for 50 per cent of all new vehicle sales to be in the ultra-low emissions category by 2030.County Cllr Graham McAndrew E: [email protected]

Little Hadham A120 bypass. Public Inquiry on the Hertfordshire County Council Compulsory Purchase Order and Side Roads Order. An Inquiry into two remaining, non-statutory objections received concerning the proposed bypass was heard in public, beginning at 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday, 17th July 2018 in the Village Hall and finishing at 4.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 18th.

The Inspector, Martin Whitehead, heard objections from Mr. Westley, East Herts Footpath Society, concerning the safety of horse riders and walkers on the routes over Mill Mound Bridge and through the proposed underpass at Hadham Park, and improvements to be made to other areas.

Paul Shadarevian QC called David Burt of Hertfordshire County Council who gave an overview of the whole project and the extensive work carried out to date. Expert members of the ARUP design team gave reports on the planning, design, environment issues and noise mitigation for the scheme. Mr. Shadarevian introduced Steven Whipp from the Environment Agency who described the environmental impact of past flooding occurrences, and the proposed flood alleviation scheme designed to protect existing properties. The EA CPO was unopposed. Helen McCormick, WSP for the highways authority, answered questions on road layouts and drafting of the legal orders. Roger Moore, of Lambert Smith Hampton, land agent for the highway authority, confirmed that terms for land acquisition have now been agreed with most landowners and legal agreements were to be progressed shortly. There were no remaining objections from landowners.

The second objector’s representations were found to have been dealt with at the planning application stages and confirmed by correspondence in June 2018.

In his closing submissions on behalf of Herts County Council, Mr. Shadarevian felt that the scheme provides an appropriate and compelling solution to the major traffic problems with flood defences for the existing population of Little Hadham. A lawfully granted and implementable planning permission has been granted, pre-commencement conditions, consents, licences and permits described at the Inquiry are in progress. Scheme costs in the region of £35m have been covered and the proposed modifications to the Compulsory Purchase Orders and Side Road Orders are clear and straightforward.

Mr. Whitehead will submit his report to the Secretary of State around the end of August together with all the documents. These will be made available on the website of Hertfordshire County Council.

If the Orders are confirmed, constructions works could start in 2019.

If you would like to find out more about the life of our church,

please see our website www.riverashchurches.org.uk

News from the Gardens of Easton Lodge The drought and heatwave are taking their toll on the Gardens, but our volunteers have been working hard to water them and keep them looking as colourful as possible for the visitors. The roses, salvia, helenium and phlox in the Italian Garden are coping with the heat, while the squashes, pumpkins and sweetcorn in the walled kitchen garden have quite enjoyed the conditions. The lavender is also thriving and very much appreciated by huge numbers of small whites (butterflies) and our now resident honey bees. At least the weather has meant that, unlike last year, we have not yet had to cancel any Group visits due to rain or wind and we have had visitors from a whole range of groups including Uttlesford Wild Flower Group, Garden Clubs, WIs and U3As and visitors from the USA wishing to see where their relatives were stationed in the second world war.

The Open Day on 19 August is an opportunity for visitors to dress up – as pirates! We know that we cannot boast connections with the coast or smuggling, but we do like to have fun! There will be a pirate trail for children, craft activities and prizes for the best dressed pirates.

Gates open 11.30am – 5.00pm, last entry 4.00pm – entry price £4.50 and free for children under 16 years old. There will be hot and cold refreshments: locally sourced bacon rolls and cheese rolls, hot and cold drinks and our usual wide selection of homemade cakes.

For more information & news, see our website: www.eastonlodge.co.uk or find us on Facebook.
