APR/MAY 2015

Java with Jaffe Thursday, May 14 at 9 AM in the Lecture Hall

Join Principal David Jaffe and fellow parents for an informal discussion on what is happening at TPHS. Refreshments will be provided by the Foundation.

H ere we are nearing the end of another school year and I want to

take a moment to reflect back on a successful year for both TPHS and for the Foundation and to thank each of you who have made a donation to the Foundation and the SUPPORT ALL STUDENTS fund.

Your generosity makes so many great things happen on campus that other-wise our students would go without. Your support of our pledge drive in the Fall, various events throughout the year, Silent and Live auctions and the “40 Year Celebration” have provided critical funds for the Career and Counseling Center, PALs, Falcon-Fest, our AVID program, the Mentor Program, Grad Nite, Red and Yellow Ribbon Weeks, the Teacher Classroom Grants program, new

Engineering, Robotics, and Anatomy/Physiology courses for next year, plus much needed tech-nology and computers on campus and in the class-rooms. All of these programs, opportunities, and equip-ment go away without YOUR finan-cial support of the Torrey Pines High School Foundation. That is how important your donations are.

The most wonderful time of the academic year (AND the busiest) is upon us and it is my hope that you will consider making a donation to the SUPPORT ALL STUDENTS fund if you haven't already. Your generosity will keep TPHS going strong for the next 40 years! Best,

Mark Bath, President

The TPHS Foundation’s “40 Year Celebration”, Live Auction, and Online Silent Auction were hugely successful in bringing in a record high $100K+ to Support All Students at TPHS.

“We are so appreciative of all our event sponsors, donors, volunteers, guests and our online and live auction bid-ders for making this the best year to date for our annual fund raiser,” states Bobbi Karlson, Foundation Executive Director. “ We knew

this was going to be a special year since we were celebrating a landmark birthday for TPHS and we are grateful for the support of the Torrey Pines HS community.”

The Spring Fundraiser, which began with the kick off event “Toast to 40” in January and ended with the online and live auction at the main event on March 28 at the Belly Up brought in critically needed funds for all TPHS students as this money will be used to purchase computers and technology for

hope was a relaxing Spring Break. From the talk around campus, it sounds like there were a lot of vacations, “staycations”, sports, and college visits. Now that we are into April, the end of the school year seems to come so quickly. We are all working hard at

TPHS to make the most of each day remaining. And there are less than 40...but we are not counting. Prop AA construction and improvements on site are continuing to move along at a good clip and we are very excited about the four brand new Chemistry classrooms which will be ready for students in September. Other campus improvements include wireless access for all of Building B and also in the interim Science facility. Thanks to YOUR generosity through the Torrey Pines Founda-tion’s “40 Year Celebration” fund raiser at the Belly Up, we will also be purchasing multiple Chromebook carts for full- class sets of computers. We have already purchased

these carts for the World Language Department. The successful spring fundraiser has also provided the funds for the one time investment in start up equipment for the two new classes TPHS is offering next year, Anat-omy & Physiology and Engineering. The preliminary course sign ups show our Falcons have a lot of interest in both of these college prep courses and we are excited to offer them. I encourage all of you who are on social media to follow the official accounts associated with Torrey Pines High School for all the latest information on school events, opportunities, District news, student and team accom-plishments, and other interesting items related to high school and campus life. My Twitter is @TPHSPrincipal. Our high school Facebook is Torrey Pines High School– Official Site and Twitter is @TorreyPinesHS. The Torrey Pines Foundation can also be followed on Facebook and Twitter at Torrey Pines High School Foundation and @TPHSFoundation. We all work closely together to keep the feeds up to date and useful.

every classroom on campus.

“The computers we are purchasing will be an important part of the campus upgrades in the coming months,” states Helen Nordan, Event Chair. “Without the support of our generous parents and community, our students would go without the benefit of this cutting edge technology in the classroom. Every bid, every donation and every ticket purchased makes a difference,” she continued.

The online auction was an impressive collection of over 300 items ranging from household décor, to spa services, restau-rant gift cards, shopping and more. “Our team of volunteers really out did themselves this year in collecting a wonder-ful array of items,” boasts Nordan. “We truly had some-thing for everybody!”

In addition to our wonderful parents, the main event was well attended by Torrey Pines alumni and staff, thanks in

part to Assistant Principal Rob Coppo’s band, Resurrec-tion Radio, an alternative rock cover band who was the opening band for the evening. TPHS staff hit the dance floor early and were joined by other guests all evening as they danced to hits of the 80’s followed by the great music

of The Detroit Underground.

Event MC, Sandra Maas kept things on schedule for the evening and announced Tim and Donielle Sullivan the winners of the opportunity drawing for graduation seats as well as Craig and Bea Zimmer the winner of the door prize donated by Diamond Boutique in Del Mar. Auctioneer Steve Hamman ran the exciting Live Auction which featured vacation and experience packages as well as the highly sought after reserved field seats and parking for graduation.

“Our spring fund raiser is always a special night for Torrey Pines as we come together to celebrate all that has been accomplished and to Support All Students,” states Karlson. “This year had special significance as we had so many alums and former parents come out and join us.”

SPRING VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Melissa is now in her fourth year at TPHS and has served on the Foundation Board for two years. She has also served as liaison for Girls Water Polo, volunteered for Football, chaired our “Toast to 40” event and headed up the Decorations Committee for our “40 Year Celebration”. Her exuberance for help-ing others and for TPHS is always apparent. We asked Melissa to tell us a little bit about her volun-teering at TPHS.

What do you love most about volunteering at TPHS? Knowing that everything I do is improving the experience the students have at TPHS. I LOVE the other volunteers, Bobbi, Holly and Kandice!

Why do you volunteer? I feel we each have a responsibility to give our time and efforts to help others. TPHS gives so much to our children and it is

our responsibility to give back.

Do you have a favorite volunteer activity? I have really enjoyed everything as I have met such wonderful people. I love seeing the final product be it the 40th Anniversary Celebration or the Football Lift-a-thon!

What makes you most proud about being a Falcon parent volunteer? The students, teachers and staff are by far the best! They are really here to make sure your child succeeds.

Thanks for all you do, Melissa!

be connected stay connected

Studies have shown that post-graduation events such as Grad Nite save lives by providing a fun, cool and safe alternative to other celebrations.

The evening of high school graduation is statistically one of the most dangerous nights in young people’s lives and attending a chaperoned all night celebra-tion for grads keeps them safer than if they were out and about with their friends.

This isn’t just a celebration, it’s a safety device!

We want ALL our TPHS grads to share this special celebration with their friends and class-mates. The food is abundant, the games are big, the music is loud, prizes abound, and wonderful memories are made.

This is a chaperoned alcohol free and drug free event organized by the TPHS Foundation and will be held at a nearby San Diego facility.

WE WILL NEED VOLUNTEERS for this event. If you would like to assist with student check in or attend the event as an all night chaperone, please contact the Foundation of-fice at (858) 793– 3551 or email [email protected].

Tips for the Class of 2015 Moms, Dads, and Grads The Class of 2015 will be jubilantly throwing their decorated mortar boards in the air before we know it! Here are some tips to make sure you and your Grad navigate the upcoming events and paperwork with ease!

First of all, there is always some confusion over Grad Nite and Senior Week. They are sponsored by different entities on campus and are completely separate events, with Grad Nite falling under the TPHS Foundation’s umbrella and Senior Week under ASB ‘s.

Senior Week takes place over the last week of school and all infor-mation and paperwork for that week will be available at the Student Store beginning in mid May.

Grad Nite forms were mailed to all seniors last month. If you have misplaced yours, please have your student pick up a packet in the Foundation office or visit www.torreypinesfoundation.org to print out additional copies...link coming shortly.

There is an early bird discount of $120 for Grad Nite for anyone who registers and submits payment before May 31. The price increases to $130 from June 1– June 9.

The Foundation is also selling graduation leis for $25. The leis will be in TP cardinal and gold. Deadline for or-

dering a lei is June 9. This is a great price and since they will be distributed directly to the grads at check-in in Build-ing B on June 12, it is one less errand for you to run on an already busy, busy day!

The graduation is held on TPHS’s Ed Burke Field and seating is open. The stadium opens at I pm and seating and parking is first come, first served. It is

recommended that you bring snacks and plenty of sun-screen and water as it is a long afternoon in the sun. The ceremony begins promptly at 4 pm and lasts about an hour and a half.

We are excited for all our graduating students and families and wish you all the very best as you take this BIG step into the future.

Why Grad Nite?

P A G E 8

SDUHSD College Night and Fair 2015 The 4th annual SDUHSD College Night and Fair will be held on Monday, April 27 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. This free event is sponsored by our Dis-trict and serves the students of TPHS, CCA, La Costa Canyon, San Dieguito Academy, and Sunset High/North Coast Academy.

Over 200 colleges and universities from all over the nation will participate, as well as representatives from test prep, interviewing strategy, summer program and financial aid companies.

Throughout the evening there will be admission forums lead by college representatives for parents and students to learn more about the college process from insiders.

This is a great opportunity for students to gather information from a wide range of schools and programs and also meet face to face with college representatives. Feel free to just pick up information at the tables or have

your questions ready, these college represent-atives are anxious to meet YOU!

All information tables will be set up in O’Brien Hall and the seminars will be held in the Activity Center. Attendees should enter through the Main Gate and follow signage to the event.

If you have any questions, please contact the TPHS Counseling Department or email [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]

See you there, Falcons!
