Freudenberg, Germany

This file has been created in the interest of furthering knowledge of our pre-American Miller

Family. By this, we can not only establish a foundation for going back further in time; but create

a starting point for researching and linking other members of the German sector of our family,

who may also have immigrated to America after John Frederick Miller. This page is tentative,

being composed primarily of information gleaned from Freudenberg, Germany Church Records;

but it is at least a start. In light of this fact, beware of the possibility of children being placed

improperly. In most cases the relationship of the father and mother is quite obvious. However,

with so many individuals bearing the same first names, and often approximately the birth date

time frame, it is quite possible to include an indivudual in the wrong family. There are also no

less than four spelling variations for the Miller lines of Freudenberg. There were a number of

Miller (i.e. Mueller/Moeller/Moller/Müller) families in Freudenberg during the 1600 -1700's;

including those of the siblings of John Frederick Miller. His sister Elizabeth, for instance,

married Hymenaeus Creutz (Haman Critz), They immigrated to America with John Frederick

and family in 1738 settling in what is now the Patrick/Henry County, Virgina area. Herman

(Harman), one of John's brother, also immigrated at the same time, and eventually settled in

Halifax County, Va., near his brother. It's likely that at least some of John Frederick and

Harman's other family, eventually found their way to America in years following their arrival;

but have yet to be identified.

As stated in 'Book 97' on this website: "...On July 1, 1992 Jane Anne Miller of Bruceton,

Tennessee and her brother, Max visited with Dr. Bernd Steinseiffer, pastor of the Protestant

Church of Freudenberg. According to Jane's account of the meeting, '...Herr S. says it is a

certainty that not one but TWO Steinseiffers and one Mueller were burned as witches! The

Mueller was the father of the first Mueller on my chart (#16); he told me when he was killed but I

do not remember. He said that the burning of 'witches' was not uncommon in that vicinity, and

that the last time was in the 1800's...' The reference mentioned here (#16) was to Henrich

Mueller's father as the Mueller who was burned. In additional correspondence, Ms. Miller

stated, '...I think those records are in the cathedral in nearby Siegen..."

The best information, available to date, on the ancestry of John Frederick Miller of Halifax

County, Virginia, is that which is found in the Publication," Ancestry and Descendants of the

Nassau -Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714 -1750", by B.C. Holtzclaw. According to him, the

first of known of this line of Millers was Henrich Mueller of Freudenberg, Germany. Born

about 1615-20 and died sometime before1670. As evidenced by the christening of his first

known child, Joannes, it appears that he was marreid not later than 1642, to Elisabeth (b. 1625),

possibly the daughter of Wilhelm Friesenhagen, Chief Justice of the District Court of

Freudenberg. He was the Godfather of Henrich and Elizabeth Mueller's son, Wilhelm (b.1647).

Other sources indicate that Henrich was born about 1611/12. His death occurred on 3 Dec. 1660;

and that he was married on 15 Nov. 1639 to Elisabeth, daughter of Johann Weigand Kray

(Krayns) of Neiderfischbach. Elisabeth died in 1653. The marriage record is found in the

Freudenberg, Protestant Church.

Brief 2021 Update

In looking at a possible scenario of potential candidates for the earliest Miller ancestor of our

Henrich Mueller, of Freudenberg, Germany; there are four Millers whose marriages would make

them possible choices for that designation. These are: Johan, and brother Bernhard

Moller/Müller, sons of Heiden/Heyden Müller. Johan married Cathrein Sturman on 7 Feb. 1613;

and Bernhard married Clara (Friesenhagen) Quast (the widow Quast), on 4 Nov. 1616. The third

candidate, is Johannes Moller/Müller, son of Ludwig Müller, who married Biele Endorf, on 28

Aug. 1614. The fourth possibility is Johan Moller/Müller, who married Margret Wolff, on 28

Apr. 1616. All marriages were in Freudenberg. No connection has yet been established between

Heyden and Ludwig Mueller, the eldest of the known Millers to have lived in Freudenberg. As

stated above the German names of Moller/ Moeller/ Müller and Mueller are used

interchangeably for these families. That makes it somewhat difficult to always keep it straight

whether or not, we are dealing with a single family, or multiple families in the area.

Best determination thus far, is that Henrich Mueller/Müller/Miller appears to have been born

between 1615 and 1620. An interesting point arises when we look at the naming patterns which

exist in the Henrich Miller and Heyden/Heiden Miller lines. This is especially true when

comparing the descendants of Henrich with those of Heyden's son, Bernhard Mueller. In both

lines we find the names: Hermannus, Wilhelmus, Elsbeth (Elssbeth), Mathias (Matthias),

Martinus, Thielmann (Tillman). Martinus and Elsbeth Mueller are especially limited to these two

lines in Freudenberg. These names have not been discovered in the Ludwig Mueller Lines. This

would tend to suggest that there is a family connection between the Henrich Miller family and

that of Heyden Mueller, through the evidence of naming patterns existing in the Bernhard

Mueller line. Bernhard (b.ca.1590); and brother of Johan (b.ca.1594).

With regard to the statements above, made concerning the burning of the Miller as a witch:

"...On July 1, 1992 Jane Anne Miller of Bruceton, Tennessee and her brother, Max visited with

Dr. Bernd Steinseiffer, pastor of the Protestant Church of Freudenberg. According to Jane's

A possible reference on this subject has been discovered concerning Bernhard Mueller, on

Family Search; posted by a German researcher (fjburghardt2746285):

"Ratsherr und Bürgermeister zu Freudenberg. Am 20 Mai 1653 als Zauberer verurteilt,

verbrannt zu werden. 1653 als Hexenmeister in Hilchenbach verbrannt."

A very revealing English translation of this, concerning Bernhard Mueller, reads as follows:

"Councilor and Mayor of Freudenberg. Sentenced to be burned as a magician on May 20, 1653.

Burned as a sorcerer in Hilchenbach in 1653."

So, based on Jane Anne Miller's conversation with Dr. Steinseiffer, it would appear that Henrich

Mueller was the son of Bernhard Mueller. This, in turn, would mean that Heyden/Heiden

(Heitten) Mueller, born about 1560, was the grandfather of Henrich. Only one Miller has been

found in records to have been "burned at the stake", from Freudenberg; and that Miller was

Bernhard, the son of Heyden Müller. This situation also speaks well of the similiar naming

patterns in the families of Bernhard and Henrich Mueller, as stated above. The actual date of his

death was 21 June 1653 instead of 20 May 1653, which may be the day sentence was passed.

Details concenring this case are sketchy. There is however, no doubt that this is the same person.

Hilchenbach is about 14 miles northeast of Freudenberg, and was a considerably older town. So,

Bernhard Müller, "gew. Burgermeister (elected mayor) von (of) Freudenberg", was charged

and tried for being a "magician" and practicing "sorcery". His fate was that he be "sentenced to

burn", on 21 June 1653.

Bernhard Müller, as shown above, was the grandfather of Johann Henrich Siebel. Family Search

shows the parents of a Johann Henrich Siebel to have been Henrich and Magarathe (Müller)

Siebel. Margarethe Siebel was born in 1625, and died in 1661, which fits the time frame

correctly. This may add one additional daughter, previously unknown, to Bernhard's family.

The two Steinseifers, mentioned above, by Jane Miller, have also been identified from the witch

hunt lists as:

"1651 Margaretha, daughter of Peter Steinseifer from Plittershagen, becomes Anton under the

judge Jung sentenced to death for sodomy and sorcery in Siegen. She "confesses" money from

the devil and having killed cattle with poisonous seeds."

"1653 Engen, widow of Jacob Steinseifer, Plittershagen, Steinseifersche, Klöncksche, "for

Death by fire damned "

Tillmanus Steinseifer, orphan son of Henrich Steinseifer, was among those from Freudenberg,

who migrated to America with the Millers in 1738 on the ill-fated ship, Oliver. Tilman was not

known to have survived the voyage. There were several others from Plittershagen who also made

the journey.

Between 1996 and 2011, eight German city councils passed resolutions to basically reject the

judgments carried out against those who were tried and executed for practicing witchcraft and

Sorcery. Among those communities was Hilchenbach, where Bernhard Müller/Miller was

executed in 1653. The contents of a letter sent to the Mayor read as follows:

"Dear Mayor Hasenstab,

Citizens' application to the next council meeting on May 25, 2011

With reference to the citizens' application in Rüthen, the city council of Hilchenbach is asked to

restore the honor of the citizens of Hilchenbach who were persecuted and executed by the witch

trials as part of a socio-ethical rehabilitation.

Reason:

One of the darkest chapters in modern history in Western Europe was the witch hunt from the

14th to the 18th centuries.

In Hilchenbach, too, innocent citizens were persecuted and the witch trial was carried out.

Confessions were extracted under cruel and brutal torture. Because only with a confession could

the persecuted be executed, namely by burning or burning alive, decollation (beheading),

drowning or wheels.

So z. B. 1520/1522 three witches were executed from Grund or from Oechelhausen on the

Ginsberg as well as Greta von Haerhusen.

Between 01.03. and on July 19, 1653, the witch trial was carried out under the mayor Theobald

Stalp, 14 women and 4 men in Hilchenbach and then sentenced to death by fire or by decollation

(beheading).

Even after such a long time, all those affected, including those not mentioned here, deserve the

social-ethical rehabilitation, as they are wrong..."

"Hilchenbach was persecuted by witches from 1520 to 1653: 21 women and men got into witch

trials. The last witch trial took place in 1653. Under the chairmanship of Mayor Theobald Stalp,

18 people (14 women and four men) were sentenced to death for idolatry and sorcery. Then ten

were burned, while the rest were only beheaded and buried on earth because they amicably

admitted their guilt. The victim of the last cremation on June 28, 1653 was Engen, Jacob

Steinseifers zu Plittershagen, widow, commonly known as the Steinseifersche or the Klöncksche.

The Council of the City of Hilchenbach decided on May 25, 2011 to rehabilitate the victims of

the Hilchenbach witch persecution in a moral and socio-ethical manner...."

[NOTE: Interesting that the Mayor of Hilchenbach (Theobald Stalp) would take such action

against the Mayor of Freudenberg (Bernhard Müller)].

An article in the Rhein Zeitung (newspaper) dated Apr. 8, 2011, also speaks of a "Rescue of

Honor Pulled for victims of Witch Hunt". It stated that an unusual request had been made by a

citizen of Freudenberg (former Councilman, Ranier Beel), to pass a council resolution, which

would "...rehabilitate all women and men condemned as witches and wizards and executed..."

This appears to be in reference to the other Gemen City councils where such action had been

previously taken concerning the numerous "witch hunts" carried on in the distant past.

Back in those days, such executions were often used to pin the blame on individuals (as

scapegoats), to account for, and/or ward off wide spread sickness, or economic catastrophe, or

some other type of calaminity, that may have hit certain communities. In other words, it was a

convenient way to divert the people's attention from a present problem. Even persons who held

public office, such as Bernhard Miller (Mayor of Freudenberg), were not immune from

prosecution. Even so, Hermannus Miller, son of Henrich, was able to serve as Mayor of

Freudenberg in 1734 (81 years after Bernhard's execution) He was also an Associate Justice on

the Freudenberg District Court.

In some instances the motivation may have been religious in nature. It was a practice which was

carried out in both Catholic and Protestant areas of the country. After 358 years, attempts are

finally being made to reverse the attitude toward those convicted and executed for such crimes.

The results of the Freudenberg City Council's meeting, held on Apr. 14th, 2011, to address this

request, are currently unknown.

daughter of Heiden / Heitten / Henrich Müller from Freudenberg, and she must therefore be a sister of

June 21st, 1653 at the stake in Hilchenbach as a “sorcerer ”Bernhard Müller was burned (see also: Witch

it should be mentioned that the wife of the Freudenberg pastor Johannes Alexius, Maria, godmother of

least five children: Joannes, Margaretha, Wilhelmus, Petrus and Johan Henrich

Mueller/Müller.

Joannes -

First known child of Henrich (Henrici) and Elisabeth Müller/Mueller. Christened on 15 Feb.

1643. Name appears as "Müller" in Freudenberg Church records. No additional data.

Margaretha -

Daughter of Henrich (Henrici) and Elisabeth Müller/Mueller. She was christened on 27 Dec.

1644. Name appears as "Müller" in Freudenberg Church records. No additional data.

Wilhelmus - Third known child of Henrich and Elisabeth Mueller was christened of 4 Jul 1647, with Wilhelm

Friesenhagen as Godfather . He was married at Oberfischbach, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany)

to Anna Maria, daug. of Johannis Fischbach, on 15 Nov. 1670. His last name was given

in the mariage record as "Moeller". Wilhelm died sometime before 1710. The known children of

Wilhelm and Anna Maria (Fishbach) Mueller were, Ebert, Anna Christina, Anna Cathariena,

Wilhelmus and Hermannus Mueller.

Ebert -

Listed in a 1987 Chart for Oberfischbach, Germany as the son of Wilhelm and Anna Maria

(Fischbach) Moller. Born on 17 Mar. 1671 with Ebert and Catharina Johann (Schramms)

Hoffman as his godparents. Henrich Moller, of Freudenberg, is also cited as the paternal

grandfather. May have died early. No additional data currently found for him.

Anna Christina -

Second known child of Wilhlem and Anna Maria (Fishbach) Mueller. Born on 12 Aug 1672

and christened on 18 Aug 1672. No additional data.

Anna Cathariena -

Third known child of Wilhlem and Anna Maria (Fishbach) Mueller. Born on 8 Dec. 1673 and

christened on 14 Dec. 1673. Anna Catharina, daughter of Wilhelm Mueller was married at

Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Hans Herman Gerhardt, son of Jacob Gerhart 19

Nov 1693. No additional data.

Wilhelmus - Fourth known child of Wilhlem and Anna Maria (Fishbach) Mueller, was married at

Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Anna Catharina Motz on 7 Nov 1693. They

were the parents of Anna Catharin, Johannes, Johann Willhelm, Martinus, Henrich, Anna

Catharina, Anna Margretha, Johanna Catharina, Hermannuss and Elssbeth (Elizabeth)

Mueller.

Anna Catharin - Eldest child of Wilhelm and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. She was christened on 22 Aug.

1694, and was married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Matthias Haener on 3

Dec 1720. Two children known: Anna Margretha and Juliana Christina Haener.

Johannes -

Eldest son of Wilhelmus and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. He was born on 3 Sept. 1695,

and christened on 8 Sept. 1695. No additional data.

Johann Willhelm -

Second son of Wilhelmus and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. He was born on 3 Aug 1697,

and christened on 8 Aug 1697. No additional data.

Martinus - Third son of Wilhelmus and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. He was born on 8 Mar. 1700, and

christened on 14 Mar.1700. He was married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to

Juliana Christina Philippina on 27 Jul 1725. Believed to be the parents of Anna Catharina

Mueller.

Anna Catharina - Daughter of Martinus Mueller. Married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to

Johannes Wilhelm Schoeller, son of Johannes Christian Schoeller on 19 Nov 1748.

Henrich -

Fourth son of Wilhelmus and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. He was christened in Aug. 1702.

Anna Catharina -

Second known daughter of Wilhelm and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. She was born on 15

Dec. 1703, and christened on 23 Dec. 1703. No additional data.

Anna Margretha -

Third known daughter of Wilhelm and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. She was born on 4 July

1706 and christened on 11 July 1706. Name listed as "Moeller". No additional data.

Johanna Catharina -

Fourth known daughter of Wilhelm and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. She was christened on

24 Mar. 1709. Johanna Catharin Mueller, daughter of Wilhelm Mueller was married at

Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Martinus Schwarzenberger, son of Jonas

Schwarzenberger on 30 Aug 1729. No additional data..

Hermannuss -

Fifth known son of Wilhelmus and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. He was christened on 26

July 1711. He was married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Louisa Juliana

Siebel, daughter of Johann Henrich Siebel, on 29 May 1737. No children currently identified.

Elssbeth -

Fifth known daughter of Wilhelm and Anna Catharina (Motz) Mueller. She was christened on 22

Apr. 1714. No additional data.

Hermannus -

Fifth known child of Wilhelm and Anna Maria (Fishbach) Mueller. Christned on 27 Feb. 1676.

The name "Hermannus" is an ancient German name meaning, "Soldier Man". He was married at

Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Anna Margreth, daughter of Hermannus Haener,

on 21 Oct 1710. Hermannus became an associate justice on the Freudenberg District Court, and

served as mayor of the City in 1734. They were the parents of thirteen children; eight of which

are know. They were: Johan Friederich, Mathias, Elssbeth, Hermannus, Jacob, Johann

Herman, Martinus and Johannes Mueller. Anna died in childbirth on 30 July 1734. Hermannus

died on 17 Jan. 1749 at Freudenberg.

Johan Friederich -

Eldest child of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was christened on 1 Aug.

1711, and married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany) to Anna Maria (christened on

6 December 1716 ), daug. of Hans Henrich Arnd, on 04 Jul 1737. Known children were:

1) Mathias b. 2 Jan.1738 at Freudenberg, Germany

2) Haman b. ca.1739 Virginia d. 1814 Randolph County, NC

3) Harman b. ca. 1741 Virginia d. 1825 Maury County, Tn (married to Mary, daughter of

Daniel Hutcherson of Stokes Co., NC)

4) Jacob b. ca. 1743 Virginia d. 1828 Laurens County, SC

5) Elizabeth b. ca. 1745 Virginia: Married to (?) Hutcherson (possibly to either Wm. or Richard

Mathias -

Second child of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was christened on 18 Dec

1712, and married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany), to Maria Christina Schmid on

2 Aug. 1742. No children currently identified.

Elssbeth (Elizabeth) -

First known daughter of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. Christened on 10 Feb.

1715, she was married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany), to Hymenaeus Creuez

(Creutz), son of Henrich Creuez on 14 May 1737. Elizabeth and husband immigrated to America

with her brothers, Johan Friederich and Hermannus (Harman) Mueller in 1738, eventually

settling in Patrick County, Virginia. Hymenaeus Cruetz's name was anglicized to Haman

(Hamon) Critz, and appears in Virginia records as such. It's not clear if Elizabeth survived the

difficult voyage, but Haman Critz is known to have had children. Hamon Critz, Jr. is one of

those.

Hermannus (Harman) -

Third known son of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was born on 9 Oct.

1716, and christened on 11 Oct. 1716, with Herman Haener as Godfather. Immigrated to

America in 1738, with brother John Frederick and sister Elizabeth (Mueller) Cruetz. Was

found at the Little Fork German settlement in Culpeper Co., Va in as early as Jan. 1748/49. He

married Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob Holtzclaw. About 1763-63, they migrated to Halifax

County, Va. where brother, John Frederick and family had settled. His name was anglicized to

"Harman", and appears in Virginia records that way. He left a will in 1772. They were the

parents of at least eight children. Their known children are:

Jacob -

Fourth known son of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was christened on 20

Nov. 1718. No additional data.

Johann Herman -

Fifth known son of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was christened on 11

Feb. 1720. No additional data.

Martinus -

Sixth known son of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was born on 10 Jan.

1722 and christened on 18 Jan. 1722. No additional data.

Johannes -

Seventh known son of Hermannus and Anna Margreth (Haener) Mueller. He was born on 13

Mar. 1724 and christened on 19 Mar. 1724. No additional data

Petrus - Fourth known child of Henrich and Elisabeth Mueller was christened of 26 Aug. 1649. Possibly

died young. No Marriage or Family Located.

Johan Henrich -

Fifth known child of Henrich and Elisabeth Mueller was christened of 28 Dec. 1651. He was

married at Freudenberg, Westfalen, Prussia (Germany), to Catharina Kraemer on 7 Nov 1699.

They were the parents of at least six children which are: Anna Catharina, Anna Margreta,

Martinus, Tilman, Johan Henrich and Catharina Mueller.

Anna Catharina -

Eldest child of John Henrich and Catharina (Kraemer) Mueller. She was christened on 5 Dec.

1700.

Anna Margreta -

Second known child of John Henrich and Catharina (Kraemer) Mueller. She was born on 27 Apr.

1703 and christened on 29 Apr. 1703.

Martinus -

Third known child of John Henrich and Catharina (Kraemer) Mueller. He was born on 11 Jan..

1706 and christened on 17 Jan. 1706. No additioal data.

Tillmannus (Tilman) -

Fourth known child of John Henrich and Catharina (Kraemer) Mueller. He was born on 24 Dec.

1708 and christened on 30 Dec. 1708. Tillmannus was married at Freudenberg, Westfalen,

Prussia (Germany) to Maria Catharin Siebel, daughter of Tillmannus Siebel on 4 Jun 1737. No

children currently identified.

Johan Henrich -

Fifth known child of John Henrich and Catharina (Kraemer) Mueller. He was christened on 9

Oct. 1712. No additional data.

Catharina-

Sixth known child of John Henrich and Catharina (Kraemer) Mueller. She was christened on 10

that the name, Theiss (Theiß), is also translated from German to mean, "linker Nebenfluss der

Donau" (left tributary of the Danube); which may give a hint as to where this Miller line lived

prior to residing in Freudenberg. The Danube River flows west to east. Its beginning tributaries

are the small Brigach and Breg Rivers in extreme southern Germany. Looking down the Danube

River, would make the Brigach River the "left (northern) tributary". This region is just to the east

of the Rhine River, which flows northward, being about 40 miles to the west of Freudenberg.
