Guest Speaker Candidates for Degrees

Leonard Peltier

Leonard Peltier is a national leader of the AmericanIndian Movement. Mr. Peltier was born onSeptember 12, 1944, on the Turtle MountainOjibwa Reservation in North Dakota.

He has spent the last 16 years in federal prison asthe subject of one of the most controversial lawcases in this country's history. He was convictedon circumstantial evidence for the shooting of twoFBI agents during a day-long siege in 1975 on thePine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. Over sixtyDemocratic and Republican Congressmen andCongresswomen, world religious leaders, theNational Association of Defense Lawyers and over20 million private citizens have asked the WhiteHouse for a new trial for Mr. Peltier. AmnestyInternational, the world renowned human rightsorganization, has identified him as a politicalprisoner.

Mr. Peltier's story has been the subject of severalbooks, including In the Spirit of Crazy Horse byPeter Matthiessen. Oliver Stone is expected toproduce a feature film based on Matthiesen's book.Robert Redford also produced and narrated"Incident at Oglala," a documentary based onPeltier's story.

Mr. Peltier is a noted artist as well. His paintingshave been shown at a variety of galleries throughoutthe country. We are very pleased to have shown hiswork at Evergreen during recent weeks.

Mr. Peltier asked that one of the Native Americanstudents graduating today read his remarks. Ms.Rio Lara-Bellon has graciously agreed to do so.

The Evergreen State CollegeCeremonial Mace

Originally a weapon of offense used in medieval warfare by a king ora great noble, the mace has been refined into a symbolic device usedon ceremonial occasions. As an academic device, the mace goes backto 16th century England when Queen Elizabeth I presented a replicaof her own royal mace to the corporation of the University of Oxfordin 1589. She ordered that it be used in all ceremonies to represent theroyal presence and the authority granted to the university to issuedegrees under the royal insignia. King Charles I made a similar gift toCambridge University in 1625. Since that time, it has become increas-ingly the custom for European, and now American, colleges anduniversities to use ceremonial maces during graduation exercises.

The Evergreen State College ceremonial mace was carried at thehead of the commencement procession for the first time during the1982 graduation. The mace is rich in symbolism. Beginning with asquare core of Eastern Maple, narrow strips of laminated maple andwalnut are attached to the core in a cross design. At the open corners,bubinga, a wood red in color and rich in grain, is inserted. The,resulting three-foot column was lathed round and represents the treeof life. Nine grooves inlaid with copper denote the nine levels of lifefrom animal spirit to enlightenment. The copper bands suggest thebonding forces of life.

The cap of the mace was turned from a single block of locallygrown black walnut. The shape is suggestive of a crown and repre-sents the principal integration of knowledge and experience. Toremind us that such an integration is a carefully balanced blend ofdiverse aspects of human nature, there are inlaid four circles symbol-izing the four major ways of experiencing the world: thinking, feeling,intuiting and sensing, and the four main characteristics of the humanmind: wisdom, innocence, introspection, and illumination.

Incorporated into this crown is a unique feature: the center ishollow and has in it a sealed vial. It is intended that each year thegraduation planning committee will have written one page, to bemicrofilmed and placed in the vial. Each year the committee willexamine the document placed in the mace for the class ten yearsbefore and include in the ceremony some short reflection on thatpiece. The intention is that the mace is part of a living event thatconnects us to our past, demonstrates our belief and faith in our futureand maintains a connection between the two.

The Evergreen State College mace is a gift from the late ByronYoutz, former Academic Vice President and Provost, who donatedthe materials, and faculty member Earle McNeil, who gave his timeand talent to its creation.
