BAKER CHAPTER NEWS

by Dick 0

So sorry about missing the 1st quarterly issue of the PPP and not having a B~ker Chapter news article therein. Prexy Suzuki-san should have appointed a new reporter thenand there!

CONDOLENCES TO: BJ Kimura & Family on their recent bereavement--Mother passed away. Rest in peace! Ditto to James T.(Oyabun), who lost

his oldest brother recently.

Treasurer Masa Hamakado is now home, but--he is still undergoing train ing atthe Hawaii Rehab. Center. Seems he has to learn to walk again. Doggone it Masa, yamato damashi! G ~ nbare! And full recovery soon.

And temporary things tend to assume permanency. As in the case of Goo S maritan, JI who "inherited" the treasurer's job "pro temproare". You might as well be "IT" for the remainder of the year and Prexy Taro san, you might as well as so inform Jimmy Inafuku, to put Masa's mind at ease. Seen at the General Yoshimasu t"estimonial, nearly 4 tables of Bakerites and better halves. Thank you all for your presence and support. Though I shouldn't be congratulating Eddie, because he spelled trouble for me. When'he took over the presidency of Club 100 in 1957? I believe, and he prevailed upon me to revive the then defunct PukaPuka Parade. And I have been stuck with it in one capacity or anot~r since. Sequel to the Ben & Pat Matsumoto story, just received a small package from the Seattle-ites, and you wouldn't believe it nor guess. Enclosed weretwo "flat" cans of smoked salmon ym ym. But, the INCREDIBLE part--label of can, read "Caught by Ben Matsumoto" and "A~gust 1970"! As real? Ben? you're not kidding are you? By the way, they were real "ono" the smoked salmon. The family beat me to it and all I could manage was a "pinch-ful's" worth only! See YOll during the Nisei Vets Reunion in Hawaii in 1973, if not earlier. The April "Executive Board meeting at Taro-san's was a "riot". Business was "short & sweet", but the after-meeting, "long and loud". So was the Baker Chapter April General Membership meeting.

GREENTHUMBS CLUB NEWS

by Mrs. Edna Sakamot o

For t he second conse cutive year , on April 5, 197 1, Marshall Higa, che mi s t with t he Ultra-Ha Co. lectured to the members on the different types and uses of the orch i d fert i lizers. At the outset "Prof" Hi ga announced that to understan~and apprec i ate his "course",. one must have

had at least 2 years of chemistry as a pre-requ i site. Most of the members felt a bit anxious but the result was encourag i ng as all the members "passed" the course with flying colors. Marshall and his assistant, Ed Sawa performed admirably in sharing their knowledge and information on fertilizers with the Green Thumb Club.

The activity for the May meeting was reporting. dn Kim (B) who presently Information Officer at Schof i eld was our guest. With great help from Mrs. Tomasa, the Col. was happy to start his orchid collect ion with about a dozen thumb pots. Good luck!

Mah j ong Yoshimura, the ever-dependable member was responsible for the beautiful corsages presented to the honored lady guests at the Genera Ed. Yoshimasu testimonial dinner on May 2 at Il i ka i .

The members will celebrate its July activ i ty with the annual steak dinner on the 4th at the clubhouse. Kazuto Shimizu, chairman of the affair is busy planning a delectable dinner for all.

Dear Tsuneo:

16 March 1971

Many many thanks to you and my fellow club members for the beautiful carnation lei and your presence at my pinning ceremony yesterday.

While my promotion to brigadier general is the realization of a rose colored dream, I must confess that my association and service with the 100th Infantry Battalion (Sep) had a great deal to do with my good fortune.

Fuzzy and I are deeply appreciative of the sentiments expressed by you on the occasion of my promotion. Please extend my deepest gratitude to each member of Club 100 for helping me achieve the impossible dream.

With warmest personal Aloha.

Sincerely,

E. M. YOSHIMASU Brigadier General, HARNG

Dear Tsune:

Thank you so much for the heartwarming and gracious recognition dinner sponsored by the Club 100 in my behalf last evening. Fuzzy and I were overwhelmed and speechless to see so many of our Club 100 friends in attendance. The warm spirit of Aloha which prevailed throughout the evening was indeed gratifying. Words cannot adequately express our deep feeling of appreciation for the honor which you and the wonderful members of the Club 100 have accorded us.

As it would be most difficult for me to personally acknowledge those directly responsible for planning and hosting this dinner and to those in attendance, may I be permitted to impose upon you and your Board through whom Fuzzy and I wish to convey our sincerest Mahalo and Aloha to them.

With warmest personal regards.
