Brentwood Elementary School, built in 1979, is located at 95 Brentwood Drive in Strathmore, Alberta. It is a single storey building. Capacity is 400 students with an area of 3,443 M2.Four portables were added in 1981 to the south elevation, and four in 1983 to the east elevation.
General Summary:
Structural Summary:Interior and exterior walls are loaded on concrete foundation walls with strip footings at 4' 0" minimum below grade. The roof is supported on 14" OWSJ @ 6' to 8' o/c loaded onto the concrete filled concrete block. Concrete block pilasters are located as required. A mechanical mezzanine is centrally located with concrete block framing and slab on steel deck withsteel joist sub-framing.
Overall structure is in good condition.
Envelope Summary:The exterior wall is made up of giant brick exterior wythe, with a 1" air space and a trowelled on vapour barrier at the exterior face of the interior concrete block wall. The windows are pre-finished aluminum frame awning type, lower operable, double glazed units. Exterior doors are hollow metal in pressed steel frames. The roof membrane is tar andgravel.
Overall, the building envelope is in acceptable condition.
Interior Summary:This school has a variety of interior partition solutions. Some painted concrete block, some painted gypsum board either side of metal stud, and some vinyl covered demountable partition systems. The majority of the ceilings in corridors and classroom are 2'x4' lay in tile, with painted gypsum board bulkheads in some classrooms, corridors, and vestibules.
Overall, the interior is in good condition.
Mechanical Summary:Central hydronic heating system, central hydronic air handling units (2) with 3.5 cfm per person. Primarily original equipment. Newer central plant DDC system.
Electrical Summary:Sub-panels are passing 70% capacity. Lighting upgraded to T8 and LED exits. AB Supernet LAN throughout. Video surv. is recommended. Overall condition is acceptable.

3 1/2" thick, demountable partitions are located in the central area of this school.
Internal stairs are equipped with handrails and balustrades.
Above the ceiling tiles of the lower floor is a totally fire taped gypsum board layer enclosing the structure above. The second floor ceiling space indicated a metal liner system throughout to separate the structure from the ceiling space.
In the original building the doors are pre-finished hollow metal doors in pressed steel frames. The portables are equipped with SCWD in pressed steel frames.
Interior fire rated doors in corridors are hollow metal doors in pressed steel frames. Fire doors in some corridors are heldopen with elephants feet or wedges.

All lighting was upgraded btwn 2003-05 to T8 w/ electronic ballast. Light quality has improved significantly.
The gym has 24 - 400W lamps throughout in protective cage fixtures.
Various 1 & 2 large, incandescent lamp heads with and without (remote) battery boxes. Most boxes are original with upgraded Pb batteries.

Panels are about 50% utilized. All lighting is on two circuits which were converted to T8s with electronic ballasts (whole school was done in two phases from 2003-06). All receptacles are on one circuit and do not appear to be surge protected. The main plug loads are typically PCs, TVs, VCR's and video projectors. Each portable is equipped with its own phone/intercom system, coaxial cable outlet and Cat-5 LAN port.
