    INSPIRING SUCCESS

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students and Friends of Reynella East College,

So much has happened since last term!

I hope that you have been following the

posts that we have been putting on ourFacebook page. A special thanks to Tania

Guest who has set up the Facebook

page as a way of getting the news of the

school out to you as quickly as we can.

I should also mention Richard King who

has been a regular contributor letting us

know how the schools Saturday morning

soccer teams have been going. I am

delighted that Richard has been able to

organise a parent run weekend soccer

program to add to the other parent run

    sports programs.

The advent of Facebook to complement

our other means of communicating to

the school community has brought our

    policies regarding student photos into

focus. The Governing Council has looked

at the issue and decided on a number

of measures to safeguard the privacy

of families. Shortly, all parents will be

asked whether they give consent to theirchildrens photos to be used in school

publications whether they be on the

newsletter, our webpage or our Facebook

page. In addition only photos of individual

or small groups of students will be used

by the school in any online environment

and only when specic permission is

given. We will avoid using photos of large

groups of students when it is not possible

    to ascertain whether permission has

been given for every person in the photo.

    The Governing Council also discussed

whether parents should be able to take

photos of school events that may or may

not end up in an online environment.

If you would like to comment on anyof these issues please email me on

    [email protected].

By the way we will shortly have our

new website online we are just waiting

for some nal technical hurdles to be

    overcome.

Our builders are overcoming some of

the hurdles they face in working through

some very wet weather and they have

continued to make some great progress.Very shortly, three classes from the

Aqua and Purple buildings will move

into the newly renovated Braes unit. The

new Pre-school has also been nished

and is just awaiting inspection from the

    National Accreditation Authority before

the Pre-school can move. After that the

nal demolition of the old transportable

buildings in the Primary section of the

school will take place, and four new

classrooms will be constructed to taketheir place. At this stage it appears that

the whole project will nish near the end

    of September this year.

Thank you to all of the parents who came

along to the secondary parent report

night recently. We are always keen to

hear of ways to improve these nights, so

if you have any thoughts about how this

can be improved, please do not hesitate

    to contact me.

Cyber Safety an issue at every school including REC

Police at South Coast Local Service Area have seen an increase in reportsfrom schools and families about the distribution and possession of

    inappropriate images.

These images, generally found on students mobile phones or facebook pages, are of a

sexual nature. This practice is often referred to as sexting.

In some cases, the images have been taken by a student and posted directly on their own

facebook prole. In other examples, they are sent to a person involved with in a relationship

and often sent on to others.

The ramication for the students depicted in the images as well as the students in

possession of the images is of great concern to police.

All parents and carers are urged to have a conversation with their children in relation to the

    legal and social ramications this behaviour poses;

Child Exploitation Material often referred to as Child Pornography - includes images that

depicts a child, under the age of 17, clothed in only underwear, nude or partially nude.

It is an oence for a person to produce or disseminate Child Exploitation Material.

The social ramications for students involved in these matters can cause embarrassment

both now and into the future. This can also cause further damage to reputation when

    applying for employment.

Mobile phones, computers and other devices used to commit these oences may be

subject to seizure by Police and subsequent destruction on court order.

    ExCHANGE NEWSBrazllan exchange students

share their experiencesAbout My Time in Australia (Bianca Melo)

Being in Australia has been the best experience of my life. Since I arrived a lot of

things have happened to me, many people have come into my life especially my

    host family.

Ive become a mature and responsible girl. Being far from your family and your

home makes you more independent and mature. When youre on exchange youre

in contact with all sorts of cultures, and you learn from it and also learn how to

respect those cultures and their dierences. Being on exchange changes your point

of view about the world and about people. Its about becoming more responsible

and independent. Being on exchange changes your life and Im loving it.

My Exchange to Australia (Leonia Andrade Leite)

Living in Australia has been the best experience of my life. I never learned so much

as I have learned here. My English is better and I learned to give value to people

around me. For sure I am not the same as I used to be four months ago. I have learnt

to respect dierent cultures, living dierent and being dierent. This exchange has

changed my life and it has been awesome.

My Trip to Australia (Adrielly Paz Feliz Paiva)

My trip to Australia is one of the most exciting experiences of my life. This experience

is dierent to what I previously thought. There was no need for a long time to adapt,

although the rst few days were not the easiest, most people have an incredible

power to adapt, and above all I was lucky to have nice people on my side, to help

    and understand me.

My new family is very cool. Two brothers to play, a mother and father who help me

always be punctual and responsible and of course patient, my new friends are too.

I miss all the important people to me in Brazil, but that does not matter much now

because Im going backsoon and imagine that

when I return I will miss my

    family and friends from

    Australia. It is impossible

to be in two places at

    once, I can come back

and visit, but I need to

    wait a long time.

    SCHOLARSHIP NEWSLillian Rilett Japanese Scholarship

I would like to take this opportunity to share some important insights

that I have gained from my recent exchange trip to Mishima, Japan.

To apply for the scholarship, I had to write an application stating the reasons why I should

    be chosen.

Once I had been chosen, I prepared for the exchange and went to Japan in the end term 1

school holidays. In Japan I attended Mishima Senior High School, and stayed with a host family

for the majority of the time.

Mishima Senior High School was amazing! It is a prestigious school and the high school had

great facilities. Classes consisted mostly of listening and writing, and after school classes were

nished, students would clean the classrooms themselves. The students and teachers were all

very kind and made me feel included.

I found school was physically draining, as it took much longer to commute and most students

also had after school activities. However, once I had gotten used to riding the train every day, it

was much easier and I used the time for napping.

While in Japan I went on three excursions. They were Tokyo Disneyland, Kamakura, and an

overnight stay in Hakone. At Tokyo Disney Land the rides took up to an hour to wait, but during

that time I bonded with other South Australian students that had come with me and the

Japanese students who I have become great friends with.

My host family were wonderful, and I did a lot of fun and interesting activities with them, such

as making dango and pizza, going to various 100 yen (approx one dollar) shops, and a little bit

of sightseeing. Although my host father was very good at speaking English and I was able to

understand my host sister, my host mother knew very little. It really tested my understanding

of Japanese and with persistence and patience we both began to understand each other. The

biggest challenge I faced was going to a communal bath with my host mother. There was a

specic place to wash and then several large baths for everyone to relax in. It was really lovely,

and they also had outside baths, which was denitely a new experience for me.

In summary, my trip to Japan was fantastic! I was able to immerse myself in the culture, and

it was extremely benecial to my current Japanese studies, as well as the future benets it

holds. Thank you sincerely to all the teachers who helped this exchange succeed and I highly

recommend this scholarship to students studying Japanese in year 9 as it is an experience youll

    always remember.
