When it’s time to clean, have your trusty green cleaners at the ready —baking soda, vinegar, castile soap — plus another ultra-cheap gem:hydrogen peroxide. You can use it anywhere, and can’t beat the price: A16-oz. bottle only costs a buck.

Here are 10 ways you can use that ubiquitous brown bottle of 3%hydrogen peroxide to your home’s advantage:In your kitchen

1. Clean your cutting board and countertop. Hydrogen peroxide bubblesaway any nasties left after preparing meat or fish for dinner. Add hydrogenperoxide to an opaque spray bottle — exposure to light kills itseffectiveness — and spray on your surfaces. Let everything bubble for afew minutes, then scrub and rinse clean.

2. Wipe out your refrigerator and dishwasher. Because it’s non-toxic,hydrogen peroxide is great for cleaning places that store food and dishes.Just spray the appliance outside and in, let the solution sit for a fewminutes, then wipe clean.

3. Clean your sponges. Soak them for 10 minutes in a 50/50 mixture ofhydrogen peroxide and warm water in a shallow dish. Rinse the spongesthoroughly afterward.

4. Remove baked-on crud from pots and pans. Combine hydrogenperoxide with enough baking soda to make a paste, then rub onto the dirtypan and let it sit for a while. Come back later with a scrubby sponge andsome warm water, and the baked-on stains will lift right off.

In your bathroom

5. Whiten bathtub grout. If excess moisture has left your tub grout dingy,first dry the tub thoroughly, then spray it liberally with hydrogen peroxide.Let it sit — it may bubble slightly — for a little while, then come back and

scrub the grout with an old toothbrush. You may have to repeat theprocess a few times, depending on how much mildew you have, buteventually your grout will be white again.

6. Clean the toilet bowl. Pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into the toiletbowl, let stand for 20 minutes, then scrub clean.

In your laundry room

7. Remove stains from clothing, curtains, and tablecloths. Hydrogenperoxide can be used as a pre-treater for stains — just soak the stain for alittle while in 3% hydrogen peroxide before tossing into the laundry. Youcan also add a cup of peroxide to a regular load of whites to boostbrightness. It’s a green alternative to bleach, and works just as well.

Anywhere in your house

8. Brighten dingy floors. Combine half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with onegallon of hot water, then go to town on your flooring. Because it’s so mild,it’s safe for any floor type, and there’s no need to rinse.

9. Clean kids’ toys and play areas. Hydrogen peroxide is a safe cleaner touse around kids, or anyone with respiratory problems, because it’s not alung irritant. Fill an opaque spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide and spraytoys, toy boxes, doorknobs, and anything else your kids touch on a regularbasis. You could also soak a rag in peroxide to make a wipe.

10. Help out your plants. To ward off fungus, add a little hydrogen peroxideto your spray bottle the next time you’re spritzing plants. Use this helpfulchart to determine the ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water for your types ofplants.

Remodeling Magazine's annual survey of cost vsvalue helps homeowners avoid sticker shock when itcomes to making home upgrades. The survey showsthat kitchen remodeling and upgrades remain in thetop ten home improvement projects that add value toa home, are green friendly - and at reasonable costs.

"When youʼre truly remodeling your house to fit yourlifestyle, you do so to increase your quality of life andenjoyment in your home," Butch Sprenger, owner ofDestiny Homes says. "Cost is secondary. If youʼreplanning to live in the same home five years or more,then renovating your kitchen, where families spendconsiderable time, will pay for itself in ease and thepleasure of daily use."

Investors buying homes with plans to renovate themfor the purpose of gaining rental income, orhomeowners who are are embarking on kitchenupgrades to sell a home faster, need a clear cost vsvalue expectation, according to Sprenger. Kitchenrenovations range from minor upgrades to to a fullkitchen home addition, and the Remodeling Cost VsValue Report offers corresponding guidelines.

Costs vary by location: area home values fluctuateand material cost are determined by local suppliers.On the high end, Zillow says a kitchen upgrade in200-square-foot kitchen with 30 linear feet ofcabinetry could offer a 98.2% recoup in cost pervalue. Remodelers Magazine median estimate costsvs value for a Twin Cites area kitchen remodel at$65,500 will have a resale of $41,029 at a ratio of62.6% recoup.

Weather stripping on windows and doors protects the home from airleaks while increasing comfort and saving energy. But as weatherstripping ages, it loses its effectiveness. Stay ahead of the game bychecking for worn-out weather stripping and replacing it.Identifying worn weather stripping

Weather stripping deteriorates due to age, friction, and exposure to theelements. It also can be damaged by people, pets, and pests. At leastonce each year, inspect your windows and doors to check for air leaksthat indicate your weather stripping isn’t doing its job.Self-adhesive foam tape loses its grip over time, causing it to pull awayfrom the door or window frame — or fall off completely. Foam also canlose its resilience, no longer springing up to fill the gap.Rubber and vinyl weather stripping becomes dry, brittle, and cracked.Over time, it can also lose its shape and effectiveness.Spring-metal V-shaped weather stripping bends out of shape, cracks inspots, and comes loose thanks to missing nails.

How to remove old weather strippingFor peel-and-stick-type weather stripping, simply pull the foam strips offthe door or window by hand. Stripping that is fastened in place with nailsor screws requires a more tedious process of locating and removing allthe fasteners.

Options for new weather strippingThere’s no shortage of weather stripping options at hardware stores andhome improvement centers. As is often the case, the cheaper and easierthe product is to install, the less effective and durable it probably is overtime.

Adhesive-backed foam tape is inexpensive — costing less than a buck afoot — and peel-and-stick types are easy as pie to install. It works bestwhere the bottom of a window sash closes against a sill, or a door closesagainst a doorframe. It’s the compression that produces the seal. Don’texpect this product to survive longer than 3 to 5 years.

V-shaped weather stripping, sometimes called tension-seal weather

stripping, is the best option for the side channels of a double-hungwindow or a tight-fitting door. This product springs open to close gapsand plug leaky windows and doors.

Inexpensive peel-and-stick V-shaped vinyl (as little as $0.50 per foot) iseasy to install but won’t last much longer than foam tape. More expensivecopper or bronze styles cost as much as $2 per foot and must be nailedinto place, but they look better and will last decades.

Tubular rubber or vinyl gaskets prove the most effective for sealing largeand irregular gaps, such as around an old door. These hollow tubes arelarge enough to plug big gaps but soft enough to compress nearly flat.Types that are nailed in place last longer than peel-and-stick varieties.Prices range from less than $1 per foot for peel-and-stick to $1.25 perfoot for nail-in-place.

Prepare the surfaceBefore installing any new weather stripping, start with a smooth, clean,and dry surface. Remove all old adhesive using an adhesive cleaner andperhaps a light sanding. Fill and sand old nail holes. If old screw holescan’t be reused, fill and sand those as well.

Installation tipsSome peel-and-stick types should only be applied when the temps are atleast 50 degrees. Check the product label.Start with one small area to make sure the door or window opens andcloses without difficulty before completing the entire job.Measure twice before cutting to prevent mistakes and waste.Cut rubber and vinyl varieties with shears or a utility knife, and metaltypes with tin snips. Be careful not to bend the thin metal while cutting it.Make sure to face the opening of V-shaped weather stripping out towardthe elements to prevent moisture from getting inside.

Installing weather strippingAdhesive-style weather stripping: Remove the backing and press firmly inplace. Removing the backing as you go helps prevent the sticky part ofthe strip from accidentally adhering to something it shouldn’t.

Nail-in weather stripping: Fasten the strips in place by nailing through thepre-punched holes. For double-hung windows, you’ll need to install thelower half, drop the sash, and then install the upper half.
