Readings for next Sunday
23rd/24th June, 2018
1st : Isaiah 49: 1-6
2nd: Acts 13: 22-26
Gospel: Luke 1: 57-66, 80
Dear Parishioners, Having just returned from my annual retreat, I have the words of the Lord in the gospel about
the apostles needing to "come away and rest awhile..." (Mk 6:31) very much in mind. If you are not in the habit of making a yearly retreat, I encourage you to give it some consideration. Not only does it provide for the necessary quiet and rest we all need from the busyness and noise of the world, but helps to refocus our attention on a right scale of values in harmony with the Kingdom of God.
This week I would like strongly to recommend for your consideration the statement of Archbishop Coleridge on the new law in the ACT requiring priests to break the seal of confession. This "premature and ill-judged" legislation will infringe upon religious freedom and freedom of conscience, without ensuring any real improvements in the protection of children and vulnerable adults. (http://catholicleader.com.au/news/new-law-requiring-priests-to-break-confession-seal-premature-and-ill-judged-archbishop-
coleridge-says) South Australia has also enacted a law to the same effect. Let us pray that these profoundly concerning developments might be remedied by calmer and more realistic deliberations, and replications of needlessly intrusive laws avoided.
In Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong

Reflection
The servant of God ought to seek knowledge, but never to show it or make a parade of it.
St Philip Neri
Who can guarantee the assured possession of any kind of good, whatever its nature? "Who of you can add any time to your life by all his worrying" (Mt 6:27). Man is never assured of obtaining anything, and everything which he holds in his hands can easily slip from his grasp from one day to the next; there is no guarantee on which he can count absolutely. Jesus teaches is: "Whoever would keep his life will lose it." (Mt 16:25) One could even say the surest way to lose one's peace is precisely to try to assure one's life solely with the aid of human industry. In what state of anxiety and torment do we place ourselves when we seek to save ourselves, given our powerlessness. We have only one solution: we must rely on God alone, with total trust in Him "Your heavenly Father knows what you need" (Mt 6:32).
Jacques Philippe, Searching For and Maintaining Peace (Scepter, New York, 2002).
LEGION OF MARY Tuesday Rosary: On Tuesday 19th of June, the Holy Rosary is recited for the protection and nurturing of all children, unborn and living, and for the Pope, the Bishops and the Priests, through the intercession of Our Lady of Grace. It begins 10 minutes after the 7am Mass in Mary Immaculate Church. All welcome. Enquiries: Legion of Mary on 0421 258 418 (Bill).
Our Lady's Gift to inactive Catholics: Over the next few months, the Legion of Mary will place a basket marked "Our Lady's Gift to Inactive Catholics" on the table at the back of Mary Immaculate Church and St John Fisher Church. The basket contains little yellow cards, each of which has Parish details and Mass & Confession times, with a Miraculous Medal attached. Please take one and give it to someone you know, who has fallen away from practice of the faith.
REQUEST FOR WOOL Now that the cooler weather is with us, our parishioner who very kindly crotchets knee rugs for people in nursing homes, is in need of more wool. As long as we can supply her with wool, she will crotchet. Please leave at the back of the Church. Thanks and blessings. Marie Melski. You can contact me at 3848 0338.
ACCOMODATION URGENTLY WANTED An Iranian refugee family (Mother, Father and one child at primary school) desperately needs accommodation as they now have been refused further government assistance while awaiting a decision by the High Court. If you can help,
please contact 0410 767 407 - Frank Ford - President Annerley SVDP Conference - or Kathleen on 0439 369 694.
Monday 9 July Brothers Tyson, Conor and Matthew's Institution to the Ministry of Acolyte
by Archbishop Coleridge - 7:00pm Before a man can be ordained to Holy Orders he must first receive and have exercised the Ministries of Lector and Acolyte; as such they are important steps on the path to ordination. As Acolytes, the brothers are called to grasp the spiritual meaning of public worship so that they may better offer themselves to God and grow in love of the people of God especially the weak and the sick. Please join us at this Mass where Archbishop Coleridge will institute Brs Tyson, Conor and Matthew to the Ministry of Acolyte. Fr Adrian Sharp, Moderator

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B: 16th/17th June, 2018
MASS READINGS
First Reading: Ezekiel 17: 22-24
The Lord says this: ‘From the top of the cedar, from the highest branch I will take a shoot and plant it myself on a very high mountain. I will plant it on the high mountain of Israel. It will sprout branches and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Every kind of bird will live beneath it, every winged creature rest in the shade of its branches. And every tree of the field will learn that I, the Lord, am the one who stunts tall trees and makes the low ones grow, who withers green trees and makes the withered green. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 91 (Said by all)
It is good to give thanks to the Lord to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night.
The just will flourish like the palm-tree and grow like a Lebanon cedar.
Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In him, my rock, there is no wrong.
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians: 5: 6-10
We are always full of confidence when we remember that to live in the body means to be exiled from the Lord, going as we do by faith and not by sight - we are full of confidence, I say, and actually want to be exiled from the body and make our home with the Lord. Whether we are living in the body or exiled from it, we are intent on pleasing him. For all the truth about us will be brought out in the law court of Christ, and each of us will get what he deserves for the things he did in the body, good and bad.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia! The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to him will live for ever.
Alleluia!
Gospel: Mark 4: 26-34
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know.
Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’
He also said: ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’
Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
