Since 1978 Netos Catering has been serving up its famous food for community fundraisers, gatherings and special events. Whether its a large corporate event with over 1,000 attendees or a more intimate anniversary gathering for close friends and family, Netos Catering has been a Turlock favorite for generations, making it no surprise the company was named the Turlock Journal Readers Choice for caterer.

We do a little bit of everything, said owner Fred Neto. Fundraisers, school events, corporate events, weddings, funer-als, picnics, sit down dinners, buffet din-ners or people can call to pick up items and full service catering as well.

The versatility of Netos Catering is dis-played with their menu, as well.

From barbecue items such as tri-tip, ribs, chicken, steak, to their famous Por-tuguese beans, Neto explains that they are not limited when it comes to what the customer would like for them to prepare.

Were not just limited to barbecue items, he said. Well do pasta, lasagna, party trays, deli spreads and gourmet plat-ters, cold cut items, fajitas, you name it.

Netos Catering is a family-operated business and enjoys being located in the heart of Turlock.

Its nice to know all of your custom-ers with the small-town atmosphere, he said. We really appreciate the Turlock community and love to be able to give back and help in times of hardships any way we can. You give a little, you get a little.

Netos Catering is not a corporate busi-ness and they take pride in the fact that they are still family owned and operated.

Every job that we do, we put the same care into it like we did it for family as for someone else, he said. We try to do the best job we can and every job that we are able to do we take pride in it and do it personally like it would be for ourselves.

White Table 26 has only been open since March 2015, the restaurant has al-ready made a significant impression on the community of Turlock being voted the Turlock Journal Readers Choice for Best Lunch, Dinner and Restaurant Service.

Chef and part owner John Gardner describes the contemporary restaurant as community driven, locally sourced and family inspired.

The region alone is inspiration for the restaurant, said Gardner. We love us-ing local products and always strive to use quality ingredients.

Their menu includes not only lunch and dinner but a late night bites sec-tion that features items such as a linguica burger and Korean chicken bowl.

Gardner said Table 26 uses local ingre-

dients from R.A.M. Farms for butternut squash and pumpkins and other local businesses seasonally.

This community is really the epicenter of the agriculture nation, he said. We have the ability to drive any type of in-gredient we need from local ag products.

Whether thats high quality beef or sea-food from the Bay Area, Table 26 enjoys their location for more reasons than one.

Turlock is such a tight-knit communi-ty and were so thankful for the support, said Gardner.

The independent restaurant is also owned by Frank and Annete Lemos.

Were very thankful and gracious for the community support, said Garner. We feel very proud of our team and are glad that our efforts came across well. We plan to make 2016 even better.

Table 26 will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight six days a week and closed on Tuesdays. It is located at 2660 Geer Rd.

    BY ALYSSON AREDASTurlock Journal

While Santa Claus was missing his signature red suit and white beard for 100 students at Wake-field Elementary School and their families one Friday afternoon last December, his giving spirit was ap-parent as he delivered presents and a Christmas dinner during the sev-enth annual Letters to Santa Char-ity distribution event.

The reason behind the differ-ent appearance was because Santa Claus in this situation was not actu-ally Old St. Nicholas, but Modesto firefighter and Letters to Santa Charity president Justin Crone, whose organization raised $81,000 in order to gift 708 kids and 305 families with clothes, toys and a holiday dinner this past year.

Crone's generosity and dedica-tion to the Letters to Santa orga-nization is why he was named the Turlock Journal Readers' Choice for Community Role Model.

Crone said that the charity effort has grown exponentially since he took it on seven years ago. In its first year, he coordinated a dinner that raised $7,600 to guarantee 60 to 80 kids a coat, shoes and a toy. In 2015, Crone hosted a golf tour-nament and dinner in order to give 708 students a shirt, pants, under-clothes, socks, shoes, warm jacket and a toy. Their families also re-ceived a full holiday meal.

Each year weve just gotten big-ger, said Crone. This year has just gotten completely out of hand, which is great.

Crone said that Letters to Santa went above and beyond for one Wakefield Elementary family in particular that was recently discov-ered to be homeless and living out of their car this year. On Friday, Crone gave the family gift cards to FoodMaxx, Red Robin and Sizzler, as well as a three-night stay at a lo-cal hotel.

We just want to give them some

normalcy for the holidays, said Crone.

In addition to distributing gifts to children at Wakefield Elemen-tary, Crone brought gifts and holi-day meals to families in Ceres, Modesto, Salida and other Turlock schools, including nine students at Medeiros Elementary School, 80 students at Crowell Elementary School and 50 students Dennis Earl Elementary School.

Crone said that while a major-ity of Letters to Santa is the work of him and his family, it would not be possible without community volunteers and sponsors, which include Central Valley Pump Inc., Turlock Associated Police Officers, Modesto City Firefighters Asso-ciation 1289, Central Valley Auto-motive, Machado and Sons Con-struction, Geigers Jewelers, Huff Construction and GDI Insurance.

When Ashley Cahill began work-ing for her fathers company, Liberty Private Security, she had no idea that years later she would branch off a business of her own. Lady Liberty Self Defense opened in May of 2015 and the response from the community has been tremendous, with the busi-ness being named the Turlock Jour-nal Readers Choice for Martial Arts Instruction.

The Central Valley is a great place but we all recognize there are problems everywhere, she said. My dad, Lar-ry, and Is motto is, Dont be paranoid, be prepared.

Cahill said that her first class had over 50 women and it has grown ever since, now a couple classes a month, levels one, two and three.

Its a really fun, enjoyable class and

people leave with smiles on their faces, not fear, said Cahill. Its a sense of empowerment.

The initial plan was to have one or two classes a year, since Turlock is a smaller town, but Cahill is proud that the demand for more classes has grown Lady Liberty Self Defense to what it is today.

Cahill believes in the freedom to feel secure as their Facebook message reaf-firms: Dont be a victim fight back.

She plans to incorporate childrens classes and senior citizen seminars with a physical therapist on site, as well.

I want the community to know how thankful I am for the enthusiasm they bring to every class, she said. The positive feedback and support from the community has just been tremendous and were so grateful for the support.
