Name of business: Glitz Fine Clothing

Type of business: Clothing store

Location: 306 E. Main St.

Contact info: 664-9737

Hours of operation: Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

History of business: When Lisa Espinola bought Glitz from a family member in 2011, her goal was to change the way people shop — with-out having to spend an arm and leg to do it. Glitz Fine Clothing brings affordable high-end fashions to downtown Turlock.

“We offer higher-end fashion women’s clothing. We work with our customers, and if they can’t make it during regular business hours, then can call to make an appointment,” said Espinola.

The Main Street store has a modern feel and the window displays are changed regularly and feature mannequins wearing the latest fashions.

“I love the challenge that comes with fashion and I’m always trying to reinvent this store to make it better than the previous year,” said Espinola.

The boutique's clientele range in age — and so do the fashions.

“We also have a separate section of the store where all of our items are sold at a discounted price,” said Espinola.

Business specialty: Glitz carries name brand fashions from well-known lines, including jeans, dresses, shoes, handbags, jewelry and accessories.

“We carry handbags and several denim lines that are pretty popular, but we have something for all ages,” said Espinola.

Juicy Couture, 7 For All Mankind, and True Re-ligion can all be found at Glitz. The clothing store also carries hand-made jewelry from local artist Whitney Oliver.

“I appreciate the customers who come and shop at my store,” said Espinola. “Some of my custom-ers have been shopping here since I became owner and I also enjoy seeing my regulars come in. If all goes well with this store I would like to open another boutique.”

Name of business: Carpet Man Pro Flooring

Type of business: Carpet store

Location: 1326 Lander Ave.

Contact info: 667-4422

Hours of operation: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

History of business: Family owned business Carpet Man Pro Flooring has served the Turlock community for 30 years with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Red and Ellen St. Clair opened shop in 1983 as a mobile business selling carpet throughout the Central Valley and eventually nestled their way into their permanent home in Turlock.

“We would travel through Manteca and Tracy selling carpets,” said Red St. Clair. “In 1987, we decided to make Turlock our permanent home and have stayed here ever since.”

After 20 years in the same location, Carpet Man found a new home in 2013, 2.4 miles away from its original store at 1326 Lander Ave.

“The new location has brought us even more customers than before. We are very happy to call this place our new home,” said Ellen St. Clair.

Carpet Man’s customer service has earned them the Turlock Journal’s Reader’s Choice Award for seven years running.

“We are very proud of the fact that we have received the Better Business Award of Merit for the last 10 years,” said Red St. Clair. “We are members of the World Floor Covering Associa-tion and Turlock Chamber of Commerce. We believe that it’s important to be a part of different organizations throughout the community and de-velop relationships with the people. It helps with the business.”

Business specialty: Carpet Man specializes in carpet and offers full line of flooring products in-cluding laminates, wood, cork, and ceramic tile of all kinds.

“We have a newly remodeled showroom full of displays and samples to make shopping easier for the customer,” said Red.

Carpet Man also specializes in window cov-erings complete with in-home consultation and professional installation.

Awards:Auto BodyAuto Dealership (New)Auto Dealership (Used)Auto MaintenanceBest Community Role Model – Don

SmithTurlock has changed significantly since

1926, but one thing that has remained a mainstay in the community is the Smith family auto dealership.

“You would walk down the street and know most of the people,” recalled Don Smith, whose father founded the dealer-ship.

During the majority of Don’s involve-ment the auto dealership was located in downtown Turlock at 206 South Broad-way. The family owned company is now run by Don’s sons, Lee and Larry, and in 2001 relocated to its present day location off of Highway 99. With a full range of new and used vehicles as well as an auto body and collision center, the new Auto Mall Drive location is unique from other dealerships in that it is a full service loca-tion, somewhat of a rarity in the present day industry.

Smith Chevrolet Cadillac’s diverse range of services and the optimal location also affords the dealership the ability to reach customers from across the region. However, not only reaching customers, but attending to them is vital for the busi-ness and something to which the Smith’s attribute to their business’s success.

“Small town Dealers can’t use high pressure methods and systems to sell cars,” explained Don.

Smith Chevrolet Cadillac instead relies on well trained and professional service representatives to help clients.

“Cars are complicated products and unbelievably complicated especially now-adays,” said Larry, noting that many ve-hicles now come with complex computer systems as well. “What we are seeing is what I like to call a golden age of auto technology, but with that comes a serious amount of technological hic-ups. Ad-dressing those hic-ups, we pride ourselves on that.”

By meeting more than 300 percent of the General Motors recommended train-ing standards, Smith Chevrolet Cadil-lac is well equipped to help individuals’ needs whether they are prospective buy-ers or looking to repair damage to their

vehicle. “There is friendliness, but also a real

commitment to provide world class ser-vice,” said Larry. “’Where service comes first’ has always been dad’s motto.”

Another unofficial motto of Don’s is to serve the community.

Prior to his recognition by Turlock Journal readers as the Best Community Role Model, Don was selected as the Citizen of the Year through the Chamber of Commerce’s Best of Turlock awards ceremony. Throughout several decades he has served on a variety of boards in-cluding the California State University, Stanislaus President’s Advisory Board, the CSUS Foundation Board, the Tur-lock Cemetery Association and Turlock Funeral Home Board of Directors. Don also served on the Emanuel Board of Di-rectors from 1968-1973 as well as the Tur-lock Chamber of Commerce Board and has been an active member of the Turlock Exchange Club for many years.

Perhaps the most striking of his contri-

butions is his time spent working with the Salvation Army both on the board and as a citizen. With his involvement dating back to the 1960’s, Don helped spearhead the organization’s infamous bell ring-ing – still a Smith family activity – and contributed to several programs includ-

ing visiting rest homes in the community to support seniors without family and friends nearby. Don also formerly worked with the Turlock Irrigation District in a program to help subsidize community member’s bills for those who could not afford to make their payments.

Name of Business: Lisa’s Pet Styles

Type of Business: Dog grooming salon

Location: 420 East Olive Avenue

Hours: Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or until end of appointment

Contact Information: 664-1424

History of Business: Each of the groomers at Lisa’s Pet Styles have three of their own dogs, which is probably why these pet lovers enjoy taking dog grooming to a whole new level.

From dying dog hair bright pink to air-brushing and stenciling shapes onto their fur, Lisa’s Pet Styles is a creative and artistic dog salon. Handmade bows, jewels, earrings, ban-danas, hair extensions, and more can be add-ed to pooches but just because the groomers make primping the pups fun, there is also a serious devotion to dog grooming at the shop.

“We have all types of dogs come through the doors from the farm dog that gets a bath once a year to some with weekly ap-pointments,” said Manager Rachel Kenney.

“We’ve got a huge spectrum of clients.”While not all clients will be dying their

dogs’ fur exotic colors, there is one principle that governs dog care at Lisa’s: taking the saf-est and kindest approach to grooming.

Each session includes basic cleaning servic-es like ear cleanings, face wash, and toe nails clippings and all of the dogs are blown dry by hand. Opposed to cage drying which includes putting the pet in a cage with a dryer that blows hot air inside, the groomers want the comfort of the dog to be first and foremost which means they don’t use muzzles either.

With more than 30 appointments each day, many of the groomers have kept the same cli-entele for years.

“It’s just like a hair dresser. You want to find the one that fits best for you,” said Ken-ney. “The dogs feed off the energy of the per-son around them and you want them to have a good fit.

Lisa’s Pet Styles has two other locations in-cluding one at 1100 East Avenue in Turlock and one at 239 E. Street in Waterford.

Business Specialty: Safe and healthy dog care.

BY ALYSSON AREDASTurlock Journal

The votes have been counted and downtown Turlock’s Bistro 234 has proved to be delectably superior to other restaurants in more ways than one.

For Turlock Journal Readers’ Choice of 2014, the res-taurant garnered a total of seven awards: Best Wine List, Best Chef, Best Friday Night Date, Best Dinner, Best Restaurant Service, Best Seafood, and Best Romantic Restaurant.

“I personally could not be more thrilled with how things ran this year,” said owner Jennifer Doerksen. “The diversification of awards that we have won show that we have something for everyone and we are open to just about anything. I love working with our guests.”

For nearly 15 years, Bistro 234 has served downtown restaurant patrons with a menu comprised of fresh and innovative American and French-influenced culinary masterpieces. The restaurant also offers a full bar and award-winning wine selection, both of which are guar-anteed to complete each guest’s dining experience.

“People have told me that our food is so consistent that it’s unbelievable,” said Doerksen. “Their comments just give us more motivation to keep doing what we’re doing and trying new things.”

Recently, the restaurant has adopted a number of veg-an and gluten-free dishes to its menu, as well as begun offering popular cooking classes and wine tastings.

When it comes to the many dishes the bistro serves, Doerksen herself attested to the quality by stating that she would opt to have the Chilean sea Bass every night, a dish that has officially replaced the restaurant’s Chicken Marsala as top seller.

According to Doerksen, the dish—which is served over jasmine rice with coconut milk—is so good that all it needs is “a little bit of salt, pepper, and a slight drizzle of butter.”

The owner credits executive chef Leroy Walker with the quality seafood the restaurant serves, who she de-scribes as adamant when it comes to finding and attain-ing fresh sea food on a regular basis.

“Leroy is the heart and soul of this place,” said Doerk-sen. “Nothing would happen without our kitchen staff.”

Walker has not only received praise from the restau-rant’s owner, but from the entire city as well as he has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Best Chef award.

“I’m always appreciative of anybody recognizing any-thing that we do at the Bistro, it makes the years that I have put into my craft worth it,” said Walker.

Since it has opened, Walker reports that he has been there every day making sure that everything is done prop-erly. Along with the assistance of his kitchen staff, he has ensured that the restaurant has maintained the culinary consistency that keeps bringing customers back.

“We’ve been here for such a long time, but we still want to keep up to high standards regarding quality and ser-vice,” added manager Jayton Gates. “These awards show how loyal our guests are and how much hard work we’ve done this year.”

For dinner or private party reservations, visit bistro234.com or call 668-4234. Bistro 234 is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to mid-night Friday through Saturday.

Millions of paintbrush strokes and 29 years since its opening, Lancaster Painting has become a staple in Tur-lock and the surrounding communities for its excellent service.

Family-owned even before Steve Talkington purchased the company in 1986 to run with his wife and daugh-ters, Lancaster Paintings features a close-knit staff that has customer satis-faction at the heart of its business. The company also provides several services that extend far beyond painting, in-cluding: cabinet refinishing, deck and fence preservation, graffiti removal, graffiti prevention, power washing, gutters, dry wall and textures, concrete staining, specialty staining, wall paper installation and removal and more.

“We’ll even replace those hard to reach light bulbs. We do a lot of those little, extra things for our customers and I think that is what sets us apart in the industry,” said Jennifer Beede, cli-ent advocate and sales assistant.

Lancaster Painting doesn’t just care

for its clients as the company ensures that it is offering a quality service by providing various trainings for em-ployees each month. Not only does the company stay on top of industry trends, but Lancaster’s proactive ap-proach ensures that all employees de-liver the same signature touch.

The company has also garnered at-tention in the local area for its com-munity outreach. For the past four years, Lancaster Painting has accepted nominations form local community members to provide a family or orga-nization a free paint job. The company also frequents local events, such as the annual Christmas Parade and Festival of Lights, with its popcorn truck that provides complementary treats to at-tendees.

“These [activities] are just an oppor-tunity for us to give back to the com-munity. If it wasn’t for the community and our customers' referrals we really wouldn’t be where we are today,” said Beede.

Awards:Best Coffee ShopFriendliest RestaurantBest Place for Healthy EatingBest Place for LunchBest Outdoor DiningGrab a cup of coffee to go from Café

La Mo and the cup will have three words on it: Love, Savor, and Community.

“That is our mission statement, our philosophy,” said Gloria Smallwood who owns the coffee shop with her two daugh-ters Hillary Smith and Brityn Butrick. “If we can keep our focus on those things the rest falls into place.”

The recently opened coffee shop has fast become a respite for many locals who gather at the downtown location to read, work, or meet with friends.

The café features a multitude of clas-sic and unique drink options and boasts a full menu of coffee creations. From lattes and cappuccinos to the Valencia, which combines bittersweet chocolate ganache, orange peel, espresso, steamed milk, and foam, the café offers a unique twist on classic coffee and espresso options. With all syrups made in house and Chai made from scratch, La Mo Café is offering craft drinks without any artificial ingredients. There are also nine varieties of loose leaf teas from which customers can choose as well as a range of pastries and rotating grab-and-go lunch items.

“You see people on a daily basis, you develop relationships with them and that was our goal,” said Smith.

However, the trio at La Mo was not only recognized for their coffee shop, but also their restaurant La Mo located a stones throw away in the same shopping center in an alcove set back from Main Street. Unlike the coffee shop which has been open for four months, the restau-rant will celebrate its four year anniver-sary in August.

There is a harmonious relationship be-tween the coffee shop and the restaurant so when La Mo was chosen as not only the Best Coffee Shop, but also the Res-taurant with the Friendliest Service and the Best Place for Healthy Eating, the trio was ecstatic.

“To be the friendliest and healthiest place, that is what we care about. That means so much because we’re actually taking care of you, it’s not a façade,” said Smith. “It’s a holistic thing.”

Natural and local ingredients also take center stage at the Latin bistro where, similar to the coffee shop, the owners en-joy creating unique twists on dishes like braised lamb tamales and quesadillas with smoked Gouda and chicken folded into brown rice tortillas.

No matter if customers frequent the coffee shop or the restaurant, there is one thing that always comes first for the la-dies of La Mo and their employees:

“Hospitality,” said Smallwood. “This is our goal, and honestly, our greatest desire is to offer hospitality to the com-munity.”

Ice skating was back and in full swing for the second year in a row at Fields of Ice, but with twice the ice. With a rink 120 feet by 80 feet, locals of all ages hit the rink.

“People were so responsive last year and even more so this year,” said co-owner Karen Macedo.

“There’s been a lot of excitement,” added husband Ron Macedo.

In 2014, the ice rink also a food truck which offers pizza, corndogs, hot choco-late and more.

R.A.M Farms launched Fields of Ice, a seasonal skating rink and Christmas

tree lot, in 2013. The Macedos initially conceived of the

idea to put in an ice rink after the success of their R.A.M. Farms pumpkin patch and corn maze.

The Macedos didn’t stop at an ice rink, but included a Christmas tree lot providing several varieties of trees for sale from the Willammette Valley in Or-geon including Noble Fir, Nordman Fir, Douglas Fir and Grand Fir ranging from 4 to 14 feet tall. Santa Clause also made appearances for photo opportunities the first three weekends in December.
