early stages by Vlad Duric from his draw in barrier three, and the gelding loomed up travelling strongly approaching the final 400 metres.

Once asked to stretch he quickened into a two length lead, and though his advantage was steadily eroded in the closing stages by Iffragal he was always doing just enough to hang on in the feature race.

Mr Hanks was purchased for NZ$21,000 at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Festival Yearling Sale from the draft of Haunui Farm, and he had four starts in his homeland for trainer Nigel Tiley, finishing a close second in the Murdoch Newell Stakes (Listed, 1100m) last November and seventh in the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) in January.

He made an instant impact on his Singapore debut when winning by four and a half lengths, but he ran a disappointing tenth when sent off favourite for the Golden Horseshoe (SGP Gr 2, 1200m) at his last start, and Peters said it was good to have the horse back in peak form.

“This horse tries very hard and I think we saw the real Mr Hanks today. The good barrier helped a lot, too,” Peters said.

“I thought there would be more pace from out wide, but he found himself behind a surprising leader (Make U Famous) in a beautiful spot.

“He was behind a few horses and Vlad did not panic, and he was very gutsy to the line. It’s great to win a feature race for a new owner, CK (Chian Kin) Phua.

“I’ve had a bit of quiet time (this season), but it was to be expected as it’s been a tough transition.

“I’ve had a lot of bad injuries and a few problems with the horses, but I’m building up with a lot of new horses.”

Winning rider Duric said after the race that Mr Hanks was travelling

so well that he had to commit for home earlier than he would have liked.“The horse jumped well and got a good spot. When Olivier’s (Placais)

horse (Whistling Win) came across, he settled nicely behind his,” Duric said. “I had so much horse under me that I decided to pop off Oli’s heels

and suddenly I was fully exposed. “I was worried I was in front too soon and the swoopers would get me,

but it was all good in the end. “Credit goes to James and well done to CK for having another good

horse on his hands.”Mr Hanks (2 g Showcasing - Zafonique by Bigstone), who raced as

Oscar Eight in New Zealand, has now won two and placed in two of his seven career starts for prize money earnings of around NZ$175,000.

One of nine named foals out of the winning mare Zafonique (Bigstone), herself a sister to the 2001 Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Lady Mulan, Mr Hanks is a brother to one winner and a half-brother to a further five winners, including the stakes-placed Disturbance (Thewayyouare).

His winning second dam Zaffra (Zephyr Bay) is a half-sister to the Group Three winner Tour Blade (Sound Reason) and has produced seven winners from seven foals to race, including the Group Three winner Kinzaffra (Kinjite).

This is also the family of Group One placegetter Colours (Gold And Ivory) and stakes placegetter Absent Friends (Dehere).

Mr Hanks’ victory also provided Haunui Farm shuttler Showcasing (Oasis Dream) with his 17th individual stakes winner.

Australia

First Winner For BarbadosDucatoon Park Stud stallion Barbados (Redoute’s Choice) was represented by his first winner yesterday when Atlantica (2 f ex Hot Senora by Host) won on her debut over 1219 metres at Gawler. The Jim Smith-trained filly closed well under Victor Wong to win by a length and a half from the favourite Mighty Mick (Hussonet). The regally-bred Barbados, who is out of Group One winner Virage De Fortune (Anabaa), won once in five starts during his racing career for Peter Snowden and stands at Ducatoon Park Stud in South Australia for $4,000 (inc GST).

Missile First Up For Harper’s ChoiceJockey Jason Collett is set to renew his association with Harper’s Choice (Street Cry) in Saturday’s Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick. Collett rode the Gerald Ryan-trained colt when he ran second to Jon Snow (Iffraaj) in the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick in April. The Missile Stakes is also expected to attract Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) winner Le Romain (Hard Spun), who put in a strong gallop at Newcastle for Kris Lees on Friday and will be ridden by Glyn Schofield, and Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1350m) winner Tycoon Tara (Written Tycoon).

Morning Brief

Snowden’s Likely To Run Two In MissileTycoon Tara is expected to be one of two runners in the Missile Stakes for the Peter and Paul Snowden team alongside Listed winner That’s A Good Idea (Flying Spur). Jockey Kerrin McEvoy has been booked for the ride aboard Tycoon Tara, who will be making her first start since her Group One breakthrough in the Tattersall’s Tiara, while That’s A Good Idea will be ridden by regular partner Tye Angland.

P B Lawrence Possible For Black Heart BartBlack Heart Bart (Blackfriars) could be on course for an early clash with Hartnell (Authorized) after trainer Darren Weir said

yesterday that a return to action in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on 19 August could be on the agenda for the rising seven-year-old. Weir is considering using the race as a springboard for the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September, one of four Group One races won by Black Heart Bart last season. “He’s come back really well but he hasn’t had a trial yet so we’ll just wait until he’s had a trial and then I’ll decide whether I run him in the P B Lawrence,” Weir told Racing.com. “He’s just a really good horse and I wish I had a few more like him.”

Minor Setback For Silent SeditionAndrew Noblet has revealed that Silent Sedition’s (War Chant) spring preparation has been held up by a cut foot. However, the trainer remains hopeful that last year’s William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner will still make the Myer Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on 4 November. "She had a bit longer out in the paddock than first anticipated because she cut

her foot which set her back a bit," Noblet said. "We just needed to give it time. It's all good now. She's back now and looks super and hopefully we can get her to the Myer on Derby Day. We'll know more in the next month."

Vain Stakes On Bandipur RadarProgressive Godolphin colt Bandipur (Commands) could be next seen in the Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on 19 August following his win in Saturday’s SAJC Lightning Stakes (Listed, 1050m) at Morphettville. The colt was one of only two juveniles in the Lightning Stakes alongside Ducimus (Snitzel) and scored well by a length and a quarter from Arkham Knight (Reaan) to land his second win in four starts and provide trainer James Cummings with his first stakes success for Godolphin.

Guineas Aim For LevendiTrainer Peter Gelagotis has high hopes for his rising three-year-old Levendi (Pierro), who beat subsequent Flemington placegetter Sully

(Reliable Man) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) favourite Anchor Bid (High Chaparral) when successful on debut over 1200 metres at Ballarat in June. Levendi recently returned to training following a short break and Gelagotis has got his eye on the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in October. “We haven’t finalised his first-up run yet but his first-up run will lead into the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and then the Caulfield Guineas,” racing manager Manny Gelagotis told Racing.com. “I’m really looking forward to getting him out in trip, he’s always indicated that he’s going to be better when he heads that way.”

Concorde Earmarked For Nieta ReturnTrainer John Thompson has a return in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on 2 September in mind for his Listed-placed mare Nieta (Nicconi). The rising five-year-old is close to trialling for the trainer and if all goes well, looks likely to resume in the Randwick Group Three. Nieta ran second in the Starlight

Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill in December and was last seen running fourth behind Quatronic (Nicconi) in the Ortensia Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone in May.

Classic Uniform To Premiers Cup Prelude

Gary Moore is looking towards the Premiers Cup Prelude (1800m) at Rosehill on 12 August for his versatile Listed winner Classic Uniform (Al Maher) following his game head second behind Shiraz (Zariz) in Saturday’s Winter Challenge (Listed, 1500m). Moore is thinking to claim off the gelding, who won the Parramatta Cup (Listed, 1900m) at Rosehill in February and has been placed at up to 2000 metres, in order to gain a competitive weight.

Sydney Considered For TumblerHighly regarded Queensland mare Tumbler (Time Thief) is set to run in an open handicap (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday as Brisbane trainer Barry Lockwood plots a course towards some ambitious Sydney targets. Although blighted by injuries, Tumbler has won seven of her nine starts including over 1000 metres

last time out at the Sunshine Coast. That win followed a disappointing last of six in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm, where she didn’t handle the track. "I will nominate her for Doomben this Saturday and then we can talk about Sydney,” said Lockwood. "I have my fingers and everything else crossed that nothing happens to her this week.” Later targets could include the Toy Show Quality (Gr 3, 1300m) at Randwick. "Hopefully, that will get her started and we can push on to other black-type mares races from there," he said.

Wolf Defends Perfect All-Weather RecordWall Street Wolf (Written Tycoon) once again confirmed his affinity for artificial tracks at Pakenham Park Synthetic yesterday when successful for the Lindsay Park team in the Winter Challenge Synthetic Final (1200m). Ridden by Cory Parish, Wall Street Wolf scored by three-quarters of a length from Believing (Bel Esprit) to record his third win from as many starts on an artificial surface. “It’s great to see him back doing what we know he is capable of doing,” stable representative Bruno Rouge-Serret told Racing.com. “He’s definitely just as good on dry ground and he’s a dead set city-class horse, he’s just been a work in progress.”

Zahra Rides Double At PakenhamJockey Mark Zahra made a winning return to action yesterday by riding a double at Pakenham Park Synthetic. Zahra took a break after the Moonee Valley meeting on 17 June and originally planned to return at Caulfield on Saturday but was forced to wait an extra

day when the latter part of the meeting was called off due to high winds. Zahra’s first win yesterday came aboard two-year-old Regal Embrace (Redoute’s Choice), who justified $2.20 favouritism to easily win the 1400 metre maiden for the Lindsay Park team. He followed up in the next race, a 1400 metre three-year-old maiden, aboard the newly gelded Positively High (High Chaparral) for Mick Price.

Waller To Implement Fresh IdeasFresh from landing a seventh Sydney trainers’ championship, Chris Waller is already looking ahead to the new season and ways in which he can improve on his record. Boosted by the exploits of the mighty Winx (Street Cry), the Waller stable celebrated nine Group One wins in 2016-17, enough to top the Australian Group One winner’s list. “We didn't have the volume of Group One winners as previously but it's been a satisfying year," Waller said. "I've travelled more this year. I've been to Hong Kong, Japan, England and America so I've got a few new ideas we can implement.” Waller spoke of a recent trip to Japan as a highlight. "They have indoor tracks for the horses to work on," he said. "So if it's too cold or too hot, they are perfect.” 500th Winner For HarrisonJockey Tegan Harrison celebrated the milestone of 500 career wins at Doomben on Saturday when riding the Tony Sears-trained Basara (Nicconi) to victory on debut in the open two-year-old handicap (1050m). The filly also provided Harrison, 51, with a 215th Queensland metropolitan winner. Harrison

holds the Brisbane metropolitan record for the most winners in a season by a female jockey, a feat she achieved in 2015-16.

Queensland Wagering Figures UpRacing Queensland has announced an overall increase of 9.8 per cent in wagering on all three codes for the past season, led by an 12.8 per cent in wagering on Thoroughbred racing. An increase in the use of Eagle Farm, which reopened in June 2016 after almost two years of closure, was one of the primary contributory factors. In addition, total turnover for the Magic Millions Raceday on the Gold Coast increased by 16 per cent. "One of the most positive aspects of the results was wagering support for provincial meetings including the Toowoomba Weetwood day, which was up 31 per cent,” Racing Queensland CEO Dr Eliot Forbes said. “The Ipswich Cup day was also up by eight and the Caloundra Cup day increased by 32 per cent. The summer carnival was also a success increasing 7.1 per cent compared to last season.”

New Zealand

Waldorf Set For Ryder StakesJohnathan Parkes is looking forward to partnering Waldorf (Highly Recommended) for Andrew Campbell in today’s Courtesy Ford Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Awapuni. The rising three-year-old won his first start over 1000 metres at Tauherenikau in October before running second in the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m). He later resumed after a break to be third behind Sacred Rebel (Sepoy) and then Getty (Excelebration) at Te Rapa earlier this month. “I’m pretty confident about his chances,” said Parkes. “He’s a smart horse and he should go very close.”

Forsman Pleased With Bowie WinBowie (Iffraaj) closed a good season for the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman team at Rotorua on Saturday when taking the Warren Sinton Memorial (1560m) to provide the training partnership with their final winner of 2016-17. Ridden by apprentice Sam Weatherley, Bowie

held off the challenge of Hotshot Lass (Mettre En Jeu) to win by a length and gain his seventh win overall. “It was a good positive ride by Sam as they did a fair bit of work to get across on a good early clip,” said Forsman. “Obviously being on pace in the race was a bit of an advantage.” The win was the 107th of the season for Baker and Forsman, who have landed their second National Trainer’s Premiership.

Back-To-Back Wins For FlickaA late charge by the tough gelding Flicka Of Gold (Bachelor Duke) saw him claim back-to-back victories over 1200 metres at Timaru on Sunday for owner-trainer Steve Tyler. The son of Bachelor Duke (Miswaki) looked booked for minor placings as the race entered its final stages but galvanised by apprentice Rafi Firdhau, came with a strong challenge to snatch victory from Nakyama (Swiss Ace). “I wasn’t too sure he’d got there either as I was on a bad angle when they hit the line. I actually thought we would be lucky to hold third halfway down the straight but he never knows when he is beaten and he found some more for us today,” said Tyler of the gelding who was winning for the fifth time in 69 starts.

Aerolithe Too Strong In Queen Stakes Aerolithe (3 f Kurofune - Asterix by Neo Universe) ran out an easy winner of the Hokkaidi Shimbun Hai Queen Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) at Sapporo in Japan yesterday. The Takanori Kikuzawa-trained filly, who won the NHK Mile Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at her last start in May, scored by two and a half lengths from Tosen Victory (King Kamehameha), with Queen’s Milagro (Manhattan Cafe) a further length and a quarter behind in third. Aerolithe is one of 28 stakes winners by Kurofune (French Deputy), who stands at the Shadai Stallion Station in Japan. Click here to view the race replay.

Three For Meisho BowlerRhein Meteor (7 h ex Aramasa Fairy by Oath) became the third stakes winner for Meisho Bowler (Taiki Shuttle) on Sunday when taking out the Ibis Summer Dash (Gr 3, 1000m) at

Niigata. Rhein Meteor denied Fiducia (Medaglia d’Oro) by a neck under jockey Yuichiro Nishida with Regina Forte (Aldebaran) another length and a half away in third. Meisho Bowler stands for a private fee in Japan at East Stud. Click here to view the race replay.

17 For ShowcasingIn winning the Juvenile Championship (SGP Gr 3, 1400m) at Kranji yesterday, the James Peters-trained Mr Hanks (2 g ex Zafonique by Bigstone) provided Showcasing (Oasis Dream) with his 17th stakes winner. The gelding held on well in the closing stages to beat Iffragal (Iffraaj) by a head, with Ferocious (Sebring) a further length and three quarters behind in third place. Showcasing will shuttle to Haunui Farm again this spring, where he will stand for a fee of NZ$12,000 (plus GST).

International

Prix Rothschild to Roly Poly Roly Poly (3 f War Front - Misty For Me by Galileo) turned in a tough front-running performance to take the Prix Rothschild (Gr 1, 1600m) at Deauville yesterday and record her second win at the highest level. The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly repelled a cluster of late challenges to win by a short neck from Via Ravenna (Raven’s Pass), who was a head in front of Siyoushake (Siyouni) in third. The favourite Qemah (Danehill Dancer) was another short neck away in fourth, having closed strongly up the stands rail from the back of the field. Roly Poly is one of 14 Group / Grade One winners by War Front (Danzig), who stood the past season at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky for US$250,000.

Second Group One For IquitosThe Hans-Jurgen Groschel-trained Iquitos (5 h Adlerflug - Irika by Areion) returned to winning ways in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Gr 1, 2000m) at Munich yesterday, scoring by a length and a half from the Godolphin-raced three-year-old Best Solution (Kodiac). Potemkin (New Approach) was another two and three-quarters of a length away in third. Iquitos, last year’s Grosser Preis von Baden (Gr 1, 2400m) winner,

is one of two Group One winners and 11 stakes winners overall by Adlerflug (In The Wings), who stood the past season at Gestut Schlenderhan for €12,000.

67 For TeofiloTantheem (2 f ex Riqa by Dubawi) made all the running to register an impressive success in the Prix de Cabourg (Gr 3, 1200m) at Deauville yesterday and become the 67th stakes winner for her sire, Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo). The winner of her debut at Deauville in early July, Tantheem was able to bag the stands rail and quickened clear to win easily by four and a half lengths from Darkanna (Dark Angel). Mister Picnic (Penny’s Picnic) was another half a length away in third. Teofilo will stand the upcoming season for Darley at their Kelvinside base for $44,000 (inc GST).

Eight For ArcanoAnother Touch (4 g ex Alsalwa by Nayef) came out on top in a tight finish to the Pomfret Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Pontefract yesterday to become the eighth stakes winner for Arcano (Oasis Dream). The Richard Fahey-trained Another Touch denied Custom Cut (Notnowcato) by a neck while the pair pulled eight lengths clear of the third placed horse Gabrial (Dark Angel). Arcano switched to Allevamento di Besnate in Italy in 2016 following five seasons at Derrinstown Stud in Ireland. He stood the past season for €6,000.

Pair Of New Winners For CamelotCoolmore first season sire Camelot (Montjeu) was represented by a pair of new winners at the weekend in Fighting Irish and Alounak, successful at Salisbury and Munich respectively. Fighting Irish’s (2 c ex Quixotic by Pivotal) breakthrough success came over six furlongs at Salisbury on Saturday evening. The Harry Dunlop-trained colt quickened up well under Stevie Donohoe to open his account at the third attempt, beating Livingstones Quest (Showcasing) by three quarters of a length. Alounak (2 c ex Awe Struck by Rail Link), meanwhile, won his debut over seven furlongs for Jean-Pierre Carvalho at Munich on Sunday, quickening a length and a half clear of Poldi’s Liebling (Tai Chi). Camelot shuttled to Australia

for one season in 2014, covering 104 mares, and he stood for a fee of €35,000 at Coolmore Stud this year.

16 Declared For Goodwood CupBig Orange (Duke Of Marmalade) heads a field of 16 runners for the Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood tomorrow. The Michael Bell-trained gelding won the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) at Royal Ascot at his last start and has won the last two renewals of the Goodwood Cup, which has been upgraded to Group One level this season. Aidan O’Brien is set to saddle US Army Ranger (Galileo) in the £523,000 race, alongside Ralph Beckett’s 2015 St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6.5f) winner Simple Verse (Duke Of Marmalade) and the progressive John Gosden-trained Stradivarius (Sea The Stars).

Haggas Hoping Ground Dries For Dal HarraildThe improving four-year-old Dal Harraild (Champs Elysees) is set to take his chance in the Goodwood Cup tomorrow, but trainer William Haggas is hoping ground conditions improve. The track is currently rated Good To Soft ahead of the five-day meeting following a spell of wet weather, the pick of Dal Harraild’s form, including two Listed wins, coming on a quick surface. “I’d like the ground to dry as he is at his most effective on fast ground,” Haggas told the Racing Post. “Provided it’s not too bad, I think he’ll run a really good race. But we’re all petrified of Big Orange.”

Limato Not Certain For LennoxDual Group One winner Limato (Tagula) is not guaranteed to take his place in the Lennox Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Goodwood tomorrow. The gelding was one of 15 runners declared for the £300,000 race, but trainer Henry Candy told Sportinglife.com that ground conditions would need to improve for him to take his chance. "We've declared him but he'll only run if the ground is suitable," he said. Aidan O’Brien has declared last start Minstrel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) winner Spirit Of Valour (War Front), while Dutch Connection (Dutch Art), who won the race 12 months ago under James McDonald, has also been declared. Champions Day Aim For Quiet ReflectionTrainer Karl Burke will aim to get dual Group One-winning sprinter Quiet Reflection (Showcasing) back for the British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) in October. The four-year-old filly won the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) and Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) last season but was down the field in the Temple Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Haydock in May at her only start so far this year. "She's in great form," Burke told the Racing Post. "And if we get this soft ground at Ascot in October I'll be happy. We've started riding her out again and she's moving brilliant and looks fantastic.”

12 Grade One Winners For Malibu MoonRansom The Moon (5 h ex Count To Three by Red Ransom) became the 12th Grade One winner for his sire Malibu Moon (A. P. Indy) when taking out a dramatic running of the Bing Crosby Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Del Mar on Saturday evening. The Bob Baffert-trained Drefong (Gio Ponti) unseated Mike Smith shortly after the start, and the riderless horse carried several of Ransom The Moon’s rivals wide at the top of the straight. The Phil d’Amato-trained entire enjoyed a clear run up the inside and ran on well to beat Roy H (More Than Ready) by a length and a half, with the same distance back to Moe Candy (Candy Ride) in third. Malibu Moon has sired 101 stakes winners in total. Click here to view the race replay.

Second Grade One Winner For MunningsEl Deal (5 h ex Spirit Of Wailea by Out Of Place) ran out a wide margin winner of the Alfred G Vanderbilt Handicap (Gr 1, 6f) at Saratoga on Saturday evening to provide his sire Munnings (Speightstown) with his second Grade One winner. The five-year-old was sharp out of the gates and made all the running under Javier Castellano, kicking clear in the straight to beat Awesome Banner (Awesome Of Course) by eight lengths, with Limousine Liberal (Successful Appeal) a head further behind in third. Coolmore America stallion Munnings has sired 22 stakes winners and stood for a fee of US$25,000 this year. Click here to view the race replay.

Good Samaritan Lands Jim DandyThe William Mott-trained Good Samaritan (3 c Harlan’s Holiday - Pull Dancer by Pulpit) took out the Jim Dandy Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) in impressive fashion at Saratoga on Saturday evening. The colt, who is raced by a partnership including WinStar Farm and China Horse Club, was dropped out in rear in the early stages by Joel Rosario. The jockey brought Good Samaritan with a steady run rounding the home bend and he soon kicked clear in taking fashion, beating Giuseppe The Great (Lookin At Lucky) by four and three quarter lengths, with Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) a further half a length behind in third. Three For Stay ThirstyCoal Front (3 c ex Miner’s Secret by Mineshaft) made all to win the Amsterdam Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f) at Saratoga on Saturday evening to provide Coolmore stallion Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) with his third stakes winner. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt set even fractions on the front end under John Velazquez and ran on strongly in the closing

stages to beat Excitations (Into Mischief) by a length and a half, with the pair pulling seven and a half lengths clear of Singing Bullet (Hard Spun) in third. Stay Thirsty stood for a fee of US$10,000 at Ashford Stud in Kentucky this year. Click here to view the race replay.

25 For Tiz WonderfulTiz Wonderful (Tiznow) sired his 25th stakes winner on Saturday evening, courtesy of Hunter O’Riley’s (4 r ex Oblige by Bernardini) victory in the Bowling Green Stakes (Gr 2, 11f) at Saratoga. The four-year-old was restrained in last in the early stages by Florent Geroux and quickened up well in the closing stages to run down Bigger Picture (Badge Of Silver) by a neck, with the same distance back to Sadler’s Joy (Kitten’s Joy) in third place. Former Spendthrift Farms stallion Tiz Wonderful was sold to stand in Korea in 2014. Click here to view the race replay.

128 For Elusive QualityJennifer Lynnette (4 f ex Lynnette by Johannesburg) won the Royal North Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Woodbine on Saturday evening to provide

former Darley stallion Elusive Quality (Gone West) with his 128th stakes winner. The Mark Casse-trained filly finished strongly from off the pace to beat Kasuga (Temple City) by a head, with Nobody’s Fault (Blame) a further four and a quarter lengths adrift in third place. The 24-year-old Elusive Quality was pensioned earlier this year. Click here to view the race replay.

Nijinsky Stakes To Dragon BayDragon Bay (4 g Parading - Cologne by Horse Chestnut) led from gate to wire to win the Nijinsky Stakes (Gr 2, 10f) at Woodbine on Saturday evening. The Stuart Simon-trained gelding was allowed to dictate at a steady early tempo but looked vulnerable as his rivals loomed up on his outside at the top of the straight. He found an extra gear when asked to quicken, however, and saw off the favourite Can’thelpbelieving (Duke Of Marmalade) by a length and a quarter, with Pumpkin Rumble (English Channel) a further length and a quarter behind in third. John Moore has long been at the pinnacle of the training ranks in Hong Kong, and the Australian enjoyed a stellar 2016-17 season in the enclave, saddling the

winner of four of the ten international Group One’s during the season.

He also prepared the late Australian-bred four-year-old Rapper Dragon, who was Group One-placed as a juvenile in his home country and showed abundant promise during his three-year-old Hong Kong campaign with four victories at Sha Tin.

After a quiet return in December, the son of Street Boss (Street Cry) was aimed at the prestigious Four-Year-Old Classic Series and duly won the opening leg, the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) , in convincing fashion under Joao Moreira on 22 January.

He followed up in the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) four weeks later before storming clear for a dominant win in the HK$18,000,000 Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) , becoming the first horse to win all three legs of the Series and giving his trainer his sixth win in the race.

“This is a really serious horse. We got him as a two-year-old and we’ve had a lot of time to acclimate him,” Moore said following the Hong Kong Derby.

“To find him is unbelievable and for Hong Kong to have him is the bonus. For the international races coming up and the races in December, we’ve got a horse that can do well for Hong Kong.”

Rapper Dragon went on to win the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) but he was unable to fulfil his vast potential when meeting with a sad end in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in May, as he was pulled up by Moreira with a fatal injury.

He was later voted the Hong Kong Horse of the Year by the adoring Hong Kong racing public, and he would have undoubtedly figured in the key mile and mile and a quarter Group races next season.

Fellow John Moore-trained runner Werther (Tavistock), himself the 2016 Hong Kong Derby

contributing significantly to the gelding’s impressive prize money haul of $7,796,490.

The New Zealand-bred is one of 13 stakes winners for his Cambridge Stud-based sire Tavistock (Montjeu), who was champion sire in Hong Kong in 2015-16.

One feature race in which John Moore was denied last season was the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) , which was won narrowly by the Francis Lui-trained Lucky Bubbles (Sebring).

The Australian-bred five-year-old was delivered with a perfectly-timed run by Hugh Bowman to win the HK$14,000,000 sprint, won the previous year by Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago), from the progressive Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel), who won four times last term, and Moore’s Not Listenin’tome (Dylan Thomas) who was a close third.

winner, made his presence felt at the highest level last season, though he played just a minor role on his belated return when sixth behind a clutch of stablemates in the Steward’s Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) in January, the first leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown.

The race was won by yard companion Helene Paragon (Polan), who would also go on the win the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr 1, 1400m) in February, beating former champion Able Friend (Shamardal) into second in what would prove to be the multiple Group One winner’s final outing before retirement.

Meanwhile, Werther found substantial improvement from his reappearance to land both the Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 1800m)

and the Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) , the final two legs of the Triple Crown,

The Hong Kong International Races in December brought together some of the world’s best racehorses, with Group / Grade One performers from Europe,

Australasia, America and Asia assembling for the four feature contests.

It was the Japanese-trained runners that made the greatest impact, however, with their raiding party headlined by Maurice (Screen Hero) who lived up to the pre-race hype in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) .

The six-year-old entire, who had won on each of his two previous visits to Sha Tin and will shuttle to Arrowfield Stud this spring, was briefly short of room under Ryan Moore in the home straight but sprinted clear once finding a gap to register an authoritative three length victory.

“I felt it would just be a matter of finding the room in the straight, and once he got the room and I put him into gear he let down exceptionally well,” said Moore, who rode Maurice to four of his six Group / Grade One wins.

“He got to the leader a little early in the end and he was easing up in the end. He’s improved every time I’ve ridden him.

“He’s very good over a mile but he’s possibly better at ten furlongs, he’s a big strong horse and he’s just got better with racing.”

Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) and Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), were each won by locally trained runners.

The Paul O’Sullivan-trained New Zealand-bred Aerovelocity (Pins) displayed a tenacious attitude to win the Sprint for a second time, fending off the potent late challenge of Lucky Bubbles to regain his title having beaten Peniaphobia (Dandy Man) by a neck in 2014.

Later on the card, the Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Only rattled home from off the pace under Zac Purton to win the HK$23,000,000 Mile, giving his sire Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) a landmark victory en route to his second Hong Kong champion sire title.

The Coolmore stallion, who shuttles to Aquis Farm in Queensland for a fee of $9,900 (inc GST), was champion sire in Hong Kong in 2013-14 and he regained his crown with total prize money earnings of HK$41,090,112 beating Fastnet Rock (Danehill) into second place.

Later in the season, proven Japanese Grade One performer Neorealism (Neo Universe) provided his home nation with another major victory in Hong Kong when landing a dramatic running of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in April.

In a steadily run affair, Joao Moreira made a rapid move to lead midway down the back straight, and the son of Neo Universe (Sunday Silence) held on bravely from the fast finishing Pakistan Star (Shamardal) to win the HK$20,000,000 feature.

Japanese Raiders Make Their Mark

Maurice

Maurice’s brilliant success followed on the heels of the dour staying performance of Satono Crown (Marju) who gave Japan their first win in the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m)

since 2001 when running down the Aidan O’Brien-trained globetrotter Highland Reel (Galileo).

The five-year-old stormed home to collar Highland Reel, who has since won twice at Group One level in the United Kingdom, to win by half a length, with the pair pulling over six lengths clear of French challenger One Foot In Heaven (Fastnet Rock) in third place.

The final two championship races, the Hong

That ride aboard Noriyuki Hori-trained Neorealism was just a sample of the brilliance displayed by Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira during the 2016-

17 season, with the rider landing his third consecutive jockeys’ premiership.

Moreira moved to Hong Kong in 2013 having won back-to-back jockeys’ titles in Singapore, and he has swept all before him during his time in the territory.

The jockey broke his own winners record during the campaign, guiding home 171 winners having set a new benchmark of 168 in the 2015-16 season.

His haul included an incredible afternoon at Sha Tin on 5 March, during which he rode a staggering eight winners during an 11-race meeting, bettering the previous record of six winners in a day which he already shared with Brett Prebble and Douglas Whyte.

“I really don't have words to describe it, it’s amazing. We know how tough it is to make it here in Hong Kong,” Moreira said of his achievement.

“I didn't expect it to happen, to be honest. To ride eight winners in a day here in Hong Kong is more than special.”

A significant proportion of Moreira’s winners during the season were provided by Australian trainer John Size, who successfully defended his champion trainer’s crown with a record 95 winners.

Season-long turnover in Hong Kong reached a new high of HK$117.4 billion during the 2016-17 season, the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) reported.

Increased interest from commingling jurisdictions, such as Australasia and the United Kingdom, have helped contribute to the jump in turnover, which represented a near 11 per cent rise on the 2015-16 season.

“Our growth this year has been extraordinary, it has surprised me how strong it has been. This time last year we weathered a small economic storm that impacted the region and resulted in a two per cent dip in our overall turnover, our first decline in eight seasons,” HKJC CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said.

“To come back from that with a new record of HK$117.4 billion for the season, up 10.7 per cent on 2015-16, is a tremendous performance.

“The incredible interest in Hong Kong racing from the commingling jurisdictions is one of the main drivers in this year’s growth,” he continued.

“If you look at last year, the total turnover from commingling was HK$3.47 billion, which was 3.3 per cent of the total; this year, with our expanding portfolio of partners, total turnover from commingling was HK$6.5 billion, an astounding increase of 87.1 per cent and 5.7 per cent of the total.

“This gives us significant optimism going into next season because we can see that the attractiveness of Hong Kong racing’s quality has really captured overseas markets.”

Contentment

The former leading Sydney trainer switched to Hong Kong in 2001 and has now won the trainer’s title on nine occasions, with his most notable success last season coming courtesy of Contentment’s (Hussonet) determined victory over Beauty Only in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

In total, Size saddled his 95 winners, and a further 125 placegetters, from 541 runners at a strike rate of 17.5 per cent, with his string amassing prize money earnings of HK$120,752,163.

“It has been a season when I had a good group of horses and things came to together for them all at the same time and that allowed quite a few to win multiple races.

“That’s how these types of records are broken, but it isn’t something that happens very often that way,” Size told the South China Morning Post after the Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice) won the Premier Cup (Gr 3, 1400m) in June to give him his 92nd winner of the season, surpassing the previous record of 91 set by Tony Cruz in 2004-05.

is a Caulfield Guineas horse or not yet, but we will see how he is going before deciding which way we head with him.

Lone Eagle (2 c Zoffany - Green Mirage by Green Desert)

He is a nice colt who will be aimed at the three-year-old sprint races. He had three starts last preparation including a good win last start at Caulfield.

She’s So High (2 f I Am Invincible - High Achiever by Exceed And Excel)

She produced a very good trial and then a debut win at Sandown in June. She has had a short break and I am not sure where we will be running her first up yet. She could have a short sprinting preparation, although she has a bit of length and scope about her, so it will be

Ardrossan (2 c Redoute’s Choice - Miss Argyle by Iglesia)

We are going to keep him to the shorter journeys and he is not going to have a massive spring. He is a Redoute’s Choice colt who is on the improve physically all the time. He is going really well. Mark Zahra rode him on Tuesday at Caulfield and got off and said he was a lovely horse. I would say he will be running in the Danehill Stakes at Flemington and I would say he will run in the McNeil Stakes, a Group Three race, at Caulfield first up on 2 September. Hopefully he is Coolmore Stud Stakes-bound but we will know more once he has returned.

Cao Cao (2 c Fastnet Rock - Serenada by Encosta De Lago)

He will run in a 1000 metre race on 5 August and then he will run in the Danehill Stakes. He is a strong Fastnet Rock colt. He is a tough, robust colt who is a bit roly poly and looks a good sprinting type of colt. I am not sure if he

Caulfield trainer Mick Price had an outstanding season, with star three-year-old colts Extreme Choice and Flying Artie both winning Group One races last spring. interesting to see how far she progresses. The I Am Invincibles can get a mile easy enough, so I wouldn’t rule that out.

King’s Authority (2 c Snitzel - Amy’s Glen by Shamardal)

Mark Zahra rode him in a jump out and he just got in amongst them and he ran an ok trial. He will run in the McNeil and those sort of three-year-old sprint races depending on how he comes up. He had a little chip in a fetlock which required surgery, which is why he had a long spell.

Ouyang Feng (2 c Savabeel - Brianna by Sudurka)

He is going to be a Caulfield Guineas horse who won well on debut at Pakenham in May before we turned him out.

Grunt (2 c O’Reilly - Ruqqaya by Van Nistelrooy)

He had one really good run at Flemington when he ran third in May and I think he is a Derby type of horse being by O’Reilly.

Octabello (2 c Pierro - Charlotte De Belle by Secret Savings)

He had one start for one win at Bendigo and, to me, he is a Caulfield Guineas type of horse based on what he has shown us so far.

Zhang Liao (2 c Street Cry - Darazani by Redoute’s Choice)

He is another colt who won well on debut at Ballarat who is owned by Sun Stud and could be aimed at the Caulfield Guineas.

Hulme (2 c Power - Madame Echezeaux by Montjeu)

He is in pre-training at the moment and Peter Moody owns him, so I am not sure what the great man has planned for him.

Lankan Rupee (7 g Redoute’s Choice - Estelle Collection by Stravinsky)

He is getting a lot more muscle on him now and getting to the point where he is tuned up and he worked on the course proper (last Tuesday) with Duke Of Brunswick and he had him covered, as he would as one has won $4,000,000 and the the other has won $400,000. He will will run in the Bletchingly first up and then I think it is time that we go to the P B Lawrence Stakes on 19 August and then into the $1,000,000 Memsie. I have never asked him to get over (further) because the races we wanted to win were the T J Smith Stakes and the Manikato, which were races that suited him, but I feel good about asking him to go 1400 metres.

Secret Agenda (4 m Not A Single Doubt - Negotiate by Red Ransom)

The spring is out for her. She came back into work but I wasn’t 100 per cent happy with her. There is a bit of fluid around the nearside tendon and looked a bit leg weary. There is nothing wrong with her as such, but she is a better autumn filly anyway, so we tipped her out and will probably get her ready for wet tracks in the autumn. She could be aimed at the Robert Sangster in Adelaide in the autumn.

Duke Of Brunswick (5 g Magnus - Tristabeel by Zabeel)

He always earns prize money, he is a great horse to own and they bred him, and they love him. We like him in the stable and he will be doing his best, as usual. He has been a horse that we have always placed to have some fun with. He has been a lovely horse to own and we never set any big Group One goals because he is not really a Group One horse.

Bassett (4 g Savabeel - Fledgling by Captain Rio)

He had no luck in Adelaide in The Goodwood, but in saying that, he’s not a Group One horse. He is only a little fella. He is in pre-training at the moment and if he is placed in the right races he can win. He can still run in black type races, but below the weight for age Group One races.

YearlingsI have only ticked them through and I

haven’t done a lot with them as yet. We were down on numbers this year. I only got 70 and usually we need a minimum of 80 to 90. Last year we had good numbers but they were more three-year-old types, which is how it has turned out. This year we only have 70 and I will know more in the next few months when they filter back through the stable

Monday 31 July 2017

OverviewOdyssey Moon, a Group-winning son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice),

will stand at Twin Hills Stud in 2017.A winner on debut of the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) at Randwick

in December 2014, Odyssey Moon had six further starts as a juvenile, finishing second in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and third in the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). He finished eighth in the 2015 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) before dead-heating for second in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry).

Odyssey Moon raced 12 times at three, winning two of those and placing five times including a second in the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and a third in the Straight Six Handicap (Listed, 1200m). The son of Snitzel raced on at four, winning the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) in January this year. He retired from racing the winner of four of his 22 starts and he was placed another eight times for earnings of $723,275.

“We are delighted to have purchased a majority interest in Odyssey Moon who, as one of Snitzel’s best ever two-year-olds, is a very exciting stallion prospect,” said Olly Tait, owner of Twin Hills Stud.

“He danced every dance as a juvenile and was still winning top class races at four, showing how willing and tough he was. He is a great looking horse that is athletic and strong. We are going to syndicate him and I know breeders will love him when they see him.”

Odyssey Moon is out of the placed Arch (Kris S) mare Run To The Moon, a daughter of the stakes-placed Moon Drone (Drone), the dam of five winners including the dual Grade One winner Jostle (Brocco).

Originally sold by breeder Arrowfield Stud for $25,000 at the 2014 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, Odyssey Moon was a $120,000 purchase by James Harron Bloodstock at the Inglis Ready To Race Sale later that year.

“Odyssey Moon was a very good two-year-old who was one of the best of his generation. He was precocious, talented and tough. Mrs Bateman has retained a significant interest in Odyssey Moon and will be supporting him with her broodmares. I am really looking forward to seeing his progeny,” said James Harron, adviser to Belinda Bateman.

Spirited bidding ensured a premium price-tag for top foals at the Inglis Great Southern Sale this week.

The Top 10 buying-bench included four FBAA members and topping them was Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) with $165,000 for a Written Tycoon filly from Woodside Park.

“She is quite a strong filly by a good two-year-old stallion,” RBA agent Steve O’Connor told ANZ News. “Written Tycoon is very much the flavour of the month and she really fits the mould of a mature early type.”

RBA owner Brett Howard enjoyed his role as a vendor at the Magic Millions National Sale earlier this month selling Written Tycoon mare Shakespearean Lass (as agent) under Glenesk Thoroughbreds. She won a stakes sprint at Caulfield for Pat Carey and was purchased by Aquis Farm for $360,000.

The Magic Millions National Sale news cycle was dominated by Aquis Farm CEO Justin Fung and his bloodstock advisor Julian Blaxland of Blue Sky (FBAA).

Their overall was $4.50 million (Broodmares), $1.59 million (Foals) and $300,000 (Yearlings). The Gold Coast Sale coincided with Aquis Australia sealing a three-year partnership deal with the Gold Coast Turf Club that will see the racecourse renamed Aquis Park.

Aquis Farm paid top-price of $820,000 for Tremor (Commands) at the Broodmare Sale. A Canterbury winner for Godolphin, she is a three-quarter sister to G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake and was sold in foal to Medaglia d'Oro.

“It’s impossible to get into a family like this generally and it’s a terrific opportunity for a new stud farm like Aquis,” Blaxland said. “Tremor could return to Medaglia d’Oro this season.”

Foals by Swettenham stallions Puissance de Lune (Ire) and Americain (USA) were targeted by Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) for a combined $145,000 at the Great Southern Sale.

The grey colt from Puissance de Lune’s first

crop is out of Anatomica (Choisir) who won at Randwick and Rosehill for Joe Pride. She also finished fourth in Sebring’s 2008 Golden Slipper.

Belmont Bloodstock’s Damon Gabbedy teamed up with Woodside Park to purchase five mares for a total spend of $387,000 at the Magic Millions National Sale. They will be covered by Woodside Park’s new shuttle sire Cable Bay later this year.

Irish-bred Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit) has covered two large books at Highclere Stud. His first southern book will include Belmont Bloodstock’s six-figure buys Tiz My View (Snitzel) and Berkeley Gardens (Bernardini).

Perth agent John Chalmers has been in winning touch this month with NZ-bred winners My Magic Miss (Mastercraftsman) and Abebe (Pentire).

My Magic Miss won again at Belmont after residual-enhancing stakes placings in the Bunbury AHA Cup and Pinjarra Cup. She is a half-sister to Stripper (G3 Sweet Embrace Stakes) and cost Chalmers $26,000 as a foal for owners Nick & Tina Tufilli at the 2012 Magic Millions National Sale.

Abebe was initially purchased by Chalmers from Rich Hill at the 2012 Karaka National yearling sale and won twice at Northam before

transferring to Eric Musgrove. Tried as a jumper, he improved leaps and bounds to win the Grand National Hurdle at Morphettville on June 10.

Chalmers also brokered the deal to stand Vert De Grece (Ire) at Geisel Park this year. He will replace All American who returns east to stand at Chatswood Stud after covering 113 mares in WA last year.

Vert De Grece (Verglas) was a runaway winner of the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in 2014. He was also runner-up to Irish champion Gleneagles in the G2 Curragh Futurity earning an International 2YO rating of 116.

Trainer Caspar Fownes bought Vert De Grece (pronounced Ver D Gree) as a Group 1 prospect for Hong Kong but he blew a tendon in the G1 Classic Cup at Sha Tin.

Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) was formed in 1988 to maintain, improve and develop the standards, status and services of bloodstock agents throughout Australia. Its members operate with the utmost integrity and professionalism and are bound by the strict Industry Code of Conduct.

Analysis: After placings at his three starts since resuming, Lindsay Park-trained two-year-old colt Regal Embrace broke through for his first win in very good style here. He began well from his outside barrier (12), settled in third place, but caught three deep without cover, before moving up (deep) to challenge at the home turn. He took the lead at the 200m and then drew away to score easily, despite a difficult trip.
