Message from the President...HAPPY NEW YEAR! Here we are with our first edition of the Park Bench in our second year of publication. I cannot tell you how excited I am for the upcoming year - 2013. We are going to have a blast together. Our commitment to offering balance and variety in the programs we offer is our commitment to you.

Your support of the Friends of the Clark County Park District has positively increased awareness of Clark County Park District’s Parks and we are so proud of the work you have

accomplished. We had such a successful year in 2012, but we feel 2013 will be even better. Let’s continue to make a difference together.

My New Year’s resolution is to help everyone in our community reach their goals as well as live healthy, happy and long lives. Come on out to any of our Clark County Park District properties. Walk with us. Get to know us better. I know you will love staying fit and healthy with us. See you in the Parks!

First Mad River Light Artillery Mark your calendars. The first meeting of the new year will be held at the Gathering House on January 17 at 7:00 p.m. Elections for new officers will be conducted during this meeting.

For more information about the First Mad River Light Artillery and to discuss scheduling a cannon shot for your event or activity, please contact the Clark County Park District offices at 882-6000.

The Estelle Wenrick Wetland PreserveThe Estelle Wenrick Wetlands offers an oppor-tunity for winter hikes. The snow cover we have seen in the past few weeks brings a whole new look to these critical wetlands that help purify our groundwater and provide habitat for many rare and endangered species.

A work party will be scheduled early this spring to remove invasive plants including the Japanese honeysuckle that are quick to take over every-thing. This event is coordinated through B-W Greenway.

For details on helping to improve the quality of this wetland and to preserve this valuable eco-system contact the offices of the Clark County Park district or B-W Greenway at www.bwgreenway.org.

Little Miami & Prairie Grass TrailsAlthough the weather may not be the best for enjoying these trails by bicycle, they are always a beautiful place to take a stroll. Getting out, walking a few miles, and enjoying the scenery can give everyone a break from the drudgery of day-to-day life and may even contribute to losing a few of those holiday pounds that came with the family dinners we have all enjoyed.

For more information about the Little Miami & Prairie Grass Trails, contact the Clark County Park District Offices at 882-6000.

The 1854 Hertzler House closed its 2012 season with an Open House on December 2 that featured old German customs. Over 100 guests enjoyed seeing fresh greenery, fruit, nuts, and cones arranged throughout the house. The tree in the parlor featured popcorn and berries, antique pewter holders with candles and Scherenschnitt (German paper cutouts), some made by our day campers during summer Living History Day Camp.

Costumed members of the Hertzler House Advisory Committee explained the various rooms of the house in relation to the Daniel Hertzler family. The guests traveled downstairs for refreshments of mulled cider and homemade gingerbread boys, German twists and Pfeffernusse.

The Hertzler House will be closed until spring unless someone makes a special appointment for a tour. A tour can be arranged anytime by calling 937-882-6000 or 937-864-1046. Adults are $5, Students $1. School tours address state standards and benchmarks and 1 adult is admitted free with every 10 students.

The house is open periodically throughout the summer for unscheduled tours. Special tours can be arranged at any time of the year for special groups or occasions by contacting the offices of the Clark County Park District at 882-6000.

George Rogers Clark Park is beautiful in the winter especially when there is a coating of snow. Take time to find your way to the limestone falls and see what nature can create with snow, ice, rocks, and flowing water.

Many activities are available in the wintertime with groups coming in and many people enjoying sledding on the steep hills. Please be careful when enjoying the parks in the wintertime as slippery trails can lead to falls.

Feel free to stop by the Davidson Interpretive Center, explore the displays and warm-up for a few minutes after your brisk, cool winter hike. Learn more about the natives that lived here and the Battle of Peckewe.

The Gantlet at George Rogers Clark Park, our annual 5K run/walk, will be held on Sunday, April 21. This challenging run/walk through the woods and trails of George Rogers Clark Park provides an excellent opportunity to test yourself on some difficult terrain. An entry fee of $25 is required with all pre-registered participants receiving a high-tech T-shirt and the first 100 participants getting a special medallion for surviving The Gantlet. Pre-registration is available at Speedy Feet: www.speedy-feet.com.

Ways You Can Help...Volunteers have been the lifeblood of the Clark Co. Park District since its inception some 35 years ago...

The Clark County Park District is always looking for volunteers to help with activities around the parks system. Each of us has our talents and it is easy to find a way to donate some of your time, talent, and treasures to the benefit and preservation of our natural resources. Ways you can help include...

Volunteers are needed to help at the reception desk, with clerical duties, presenting programs, helping with the preservation and presentation of our 1854 Hertzler family home, and numerous other areas. Your support is always welcome.

Link your Kroger card to the Clark County Park District. Spend 10 minutes and log on to the Kroger website (www.kroger.com), go to the Community Rewards section, and link your card to the Friends of the Clark County Park District (organization 82248). Nothing else has to be done, ever. By doing this, you allow a percentage of all of your purchases to be donated to the Friends of the Clark County Park District to help support our work.

Special Projects: The Clark County Park District will begin planning for special projects and programs that re-quire additional financial support. Please consider a financial donation to help with various projects in the park.

Financial Support: We are currently looking for financial support for The Gantlet to sponsor the cannon shot that starts the race ($250), the special medallions for the first 100 participants ($400), and operating expenses for setting up the course, handling pre-registration, and keeping track of participant times ($500). Other pro-grams, such as the Hertzler House Day Camp for Youth held every June have expenses as well. We are always looking for ideas and programs to engage the citizens and youth of Clark County in getting out and enjoying our parks. Ideas for financial support for those programs are always welcome.
