On 12th December, 2016,
Cyclone Vardah tore into
the city of Chennai with
a vengeance buffeting it
with 200+ km strong winds
and torrential rains. By the
time the storm had abated,
the lid had been blown off
the city’s green cover with
roughly 3,000 – 4,000 trees
uprooted.
Amongst these was a banyan
tree in Little Mount, Chennai
that had stood the ravages of
time for more two centuries!
As the city authorities literally
swung into action to clear
the fallen trees, surprisingly
they found some life in this
particular tree! Immediately,
environmentalists and tree
lovers were called in to try
and rescue this tree.
L&T was approached to lend
a hand for this exercise and a
team from Heavy Civil IC lent
their mite and machines to
lift the hefty trunk into place.
“It was tough work and we
had to work very carefully,”

Although blessed with three
rivers and 300+ lakes, water
has perennially remained
a matter of grave concern
for Chennai. However,
paradoxical though it may
sound, a lot of attention has
been trained on maintaining
the existing water bodies and
creating new ones.
Administrative Boundaries
Kancheepuram District
One case in point is
the suburban village of
Karasangal nestled outside
the Tambaram, Kanchipuram
district on the Vandalur-
Oragadam highway that is
home to a large lake, 4 ponds
and a connecting stream to
the Adyar River. The floods of
December 2015 ravaged the
Stages of restoration:
Manual and voluntary clean up of the lake to remove physical and non-degradable trash from the water body.
Scientific mapping to understand the water and soil type
Mechanized desilting and deepening of the water body across the lake bed area to increase water holding capacity by 20%. 2 to 3ft silt was removed from across the contour based on measurements. The excavated silt was used to lay bunds around the lake.
Bund strengthening efforts through packed layers of fresh bund and its maintenance
Protective fencing of the bund area to prevent future accumulation of trash
Planting of native species
Inlet and outlet channels regulated to ensure free flow of water
Extended awareness campaigns throughout the project period in the neighborhood to sustain the efforts of maintaining the restored lake

L&T took the lead and along
with the Environmentalist
Foundation of India (EFI)
have been in the process of
restoring the Karasangal lake
over the last 7 months.
Voluntary Scientific
restoration of the lake
was undertaken with
permissions from the
district administration. L&T
supported the initiative with
machines, fuel, raw material
and labor. Executed by
EFI as a community based
conservation project, it
involved the local community
right through from the initial
stages to completion.
Project Green Hands is a
green initiative started by L&T
Construction with the help
of ISHA Foundation originally
in the form of an in-house
‘Nursery’ over a 500-sq-feet
area where tree saplings
are nurtured, transplanted
and distributed to various
locations for planting.
The nursery is nurtured by
employees who find time
during lunch breaks, evenings
and/or over weekends. They
also assist a full time gardener
for pocket filling, seedling,
transplanting, pocket shifting,
cleaning, etc. Different
species of tree saplings like
fruit bearing, flower, shade
trees and timber trees are
grown in the nursery to meet
public demand. The pockets
and seeds are provided by
Isha Foundation free of cost
apart from their expertise as
and when needed.
With the help of the CSR
team the grown saplings are
transplanted in public places
like government schools,
parks, institutions and some
sent to ISHA for redistribution
to other nurseries. Employees
are also encouraged to
increase the green cover by
planting tree saplings in and
around their living areas.
Two ‘bio-bins’ are used for
composting vegetable waste
collected from the various
canteens. This is a continuous
process that involves collection
and segregation of wet and
dry vegetable wastes. At the
bottom of the bio-bin is a
pipe through which the waste
water is drained out leaving
only the dry vegetables at
the top of the bin. A thin
layer of cow dung is spread
over layers of vegetable peels
that provides the necessary
microbes for compost. After
40 days, the dry waste
becomes a fine powdered
organic manure which is
then used for plants. On an
average 30 kgs of manure
gets produced through this
process. All plants nurtured
in the nursery are chemical
free as only organic manure and panchakavyam are used for
growing them.
In the past six months, more than 12000 saplings have been
nurtured and transplanted and around 9325 saplings distributed
to various schools, universities, nurseries across Chennai and
several villages in Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram districts.

6 EDUCATION
The Single Teacher Schools programme,
L&T Construction’s flagship CSR initiative,
has already embraced 3,125+ students
across 125 locations in the Tamil Nadu
districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur.
Through an integrated approach, children
in the primary and middle levels are
strengthened with learning thereby giving
them the hope for a better tomorrow! The
programme’s versatility is that it is proving
to be a sound platform to launch other
CSR initiatives.
Single Teacher Schools
programme is making
consistent progress in the
areas of nurturing academic
excellence and improving
soft skills among some 3125
children. The programme
aims to infuse quality
into education through
supplementary supports after
regular schooling hours. Now,
three years old, the results are
very evident and encouraging.
The learning levels and
performance of children in
schools have gradually risen
and as of today more than
seventy percent of students
have scored above 80% in
assessment tests.
A significant value-addition
to the programme has
been the creation of a
children’s newsletter with
the entire content exclusively

the children. The motive is to
infuse a love for writing in the
children and thereby improve
their linguistic skills from a
very young age. Trained for
this purpose, they came up

helps build and develop their
confidence in communication
and creative writing but also
makes them think about their
community.
An editorial committee
formed by the children drawn
from the higher primary
classes collect and decide
the stories to be carried on
the basis of merit and other
parameters.
Children have been
enthusiastically participating
in this exercise and are, just
as adults, overjoyed to see

makes it aspirational for other
children to start participating

This exercise has made
everyone realize that children

Seth Vidyalaya is a co-
educational primary school
located at Madanpur Khadar,
New Delhi that provides
education to over 500
children belonging to the
underprivileged sections
of society from the nearby
colonies. The school has
employed qualified and
experienced teachers to
provide quality primary
education that will help
mainstream them into
Government schools.
L&T has been lending
educational and infrastructure
support to this school for a
while and as a CSR initiative,
the Delhi Regional Office,
along with Prayatan has taken
up the development of Seth
Vidyalaya.
Through participative
learning, the potential of
the children is developed to
the fullest preparing them
to be confident to face the
challenges of the world. The
progressive and dynamic
methods of teaching adopted
inculcate the desirable values,
proper attitudes and habits in
the children. By attending the
school, children are exposed
to educational programmes
in a comfortable environment
which reduces the incidence
of drop-outs and certain
essential levels of learning
are achieved. The quality
of education imparted, the
low fees and the superior
performance of the children
when compared to those of
other neighboring schools
have made Seth Vidyalaya a
big hit with the parents and
teachers of the area. Personal
monitoring is ensured at all
levels and special coaching
is provided to slow learners

In a world of increasingly unhealthy lifestyles, L&T with its outreach programmes is seeking to build and sustain a healthy society. Be it through comprehensive medical or specialized eye camps, the effort is to bring the smile back on faces even if they are elderly and have been abandoned on the streets of Chennai.
L&T increased its ambit of
influence in the villages of
Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram
by introducing visual care in
addition to the educational
intervention that was already
on stream. First, a base line
survey was conducted with
the support of Single Teacher
Schools to identify the villages
that required immediate
visual care based on which,
in association with Sankara
Netralaya, 11 exclusive eye
camps were organized either
at Government schools or
Village Panchayat Office
premises.
The initiative was extended
to the rural teachers of Single
Teacher School Villages as
well that benefited 409
women teachers.

City streets can be very
unforgiving especially for
those with no help. The
streets of Chennai have
however been made just
a bit friendlier for the less
privileged elderly people
through the efforts of L&T
in partnership with HelpAge
India. What began as a rescue
initiative for the abandoned
elderly has grown into an
integrated health care service.
A toll-free number – 1253 -
has been integrated with a
modern control room at the
office of the Commissioner
of Police, Egmore, Chennai.
On receipt of a distress call
that elderly people have been
abandoned on the streets,
the Helpline van rushes to
the spot with a counsellor
and a social worker along
with a facility for medical
treatment and rescue. The
Chennai city police has
helped significantly to make
this initiative a huge success.
Further, the involvement
of multi stakeholders has
made this project far more
impactful.
It soon became evident that
the elderly people who were
neArLy
rescued from the streets
underwent severe mental
agony and thus psychosocial
interventions through
counselling and recreational
activities were introduced.

To improve skilling in
india, L&T established the
first CSTi at Kanchipuram
in 1994. This was followed
by the one at Panvel four
years later and presently
there are eight CSTis across
the country that have been
cumulatively adding to
the country’s skilled labor
force. The numbers tell
the success of the CSTis:
over 50,000 technicians,
150,000+ workmen of
contractors and over
125,000 workmen through
MoUs and tie-ups have
been trained over the past
two decades. 200,000+
workmen have also been
trained through e-learning
modules.
CSTI Panvel, walked away
with the Annual Quality
Trophy for 2016 on the
basis of some sustained
performances over the last
couple of years. The well-
deserved award was decided
on the basis of 6 parameters
with varying weightages:
1| Quality Audit Reports
2| Sourcing Methods and
Achievements
3| Engagement (Placement)
and Retention of
Candidates
4| Support for Site-based
Training
5| Optimum Utilization of
Training Resources
6| Customizing/Adopting
Innovative Practices as
part of Trade Training
These attributes are analysed
through the prism of
Skills Training Concepts,
achievement of yearly
targets, development of
new trades as per specific
needs from BUs, extent
of site based training and
support to the BUs, optimum
utilization of all resources like
admin staff, trainers, training
infrastructure, teaching aids,
tools & tackles, consumables
and adoption of new skills
training techniques to achieve
safety, quality, productivity,
minimize wastage and ensure
proper housekeeping.
Trainers are instructors
and demonstrators:
Experienced trainers are the
backbone of any successful
institute and their longevity
vastly enhances the quality
of training imparted. At CSTI
Panvel, 80% of trainers are
CSTI-trained students and
more than 90% of them
have been working since
2008! Various programmes
like Training the Trainers,
refreshment courses for
trainers and master trainers’
programmes are regularly
conducted. No wonder that
CSTI-Panvel scored 90.1%
marks and also got the grade
of A+ for Fy 2015-16 in this
area.
Superior trade
infrastructure:
The success of an institute
also depends on the quality
of trade infrastructure that
embraces not only the
practical yards and materials
but also requirements of
knowledge and skill sets
for each trade. It is directly
connected with the number
of students, number of
practical exercises, number
of practical yards, minimum
tools & tackles, teaching
aids, lesson plans and finally
cost. At CSTI – Panvel, trade
infrastructure is spread over
8 acres of land and there are
clearly earmarked training
yards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd
month’s training periods and
hence month wise learning,
tracking and evaluation are
possible. Further, sound

training is only possible by
using the right kind of tools
and material and the most
advanced in the market are
available to the trainees.
Developing new trades as
per the Skills Standards
Falling under the aegis of B&F
IC and serving exclusively to
the RB&F BU, CSTI Panvel has
been constantly upgrading its
existing conventional trades
to meet the needs of the BU
like masonry to advanced
masonry that has stimulated
entire site activities and the
CSTI have been able to send
trained candidates to B&F
sites. The simulated trade
infrastructure accommodate
all trade variables in every
practical module which has
been one of the standout
features of CSTI Panvel.
Similarly, a new trade of
Tiling & Stone Work has
been developed and installed
from curriculum design to
trade infrastructure within 11
months. The newly designed
trade was evaluated by
High Bury College, UK
under United Kingdom India
the site recommended
productivity. A monthly
internal quality audit is
conducted to assess the
trainees and the ground they
have covered which allows
for course corrections and/
or corrective actions. Though
the CSTI has been able to
retain their trainees during
the handholding period,
there have been discouraging
declines post it.
Cost per Trainee
connected with optimum
utilization of resources:
Target achievement is directly
connected with the optimum
utilization of trainers, trade
infrastructure, tools & tackles
and fulfilling the lesson plan
which has been consistently
high at CSTI Panvel.
Budgeting and monitoring of
costs have also been efficient.
Customizing innovation
practices to achieve
results
Being closely aligned to the
requirements of the BU has
made it easier for CSTI Panvel
to update its trade curriculum,
practices, modernize tools
& tackles and machinery to
improve safety, quality and
productivity which have also
been translated into efficient
site-based training, training
the trainers programs, sound
accounts & admin practices
on admission, placements,
training, certification,
distributing and tracking
of trainees for further
opportunities.
Innovation is also in the
adoption and use of material
to make courses more
industry relevant. A case in
point is the widespread use
of gypsum plaster instead
of cement & sand plaster. As
training cannot be conducted
on gypsum, through R&D,
the CSTI has found a new
material – sand-crushed,
limestone mix – as a very
good alternative.
11
As our CSTIs have grown and
matured, they have assumed
relevance as a key aspect
of our Corporate Social
Responsibility programme
with more and more
unemployed rural youth
finding the opportunity to
train themselves and get
gainfully employed. We are
also proud that this endeavor

Despite its geographical
disadvantage of being
located in the outskirts
of Mumbai which is a
poor catchment area for
