symbol: the animal dance

what it represents: the dance expresses feelings about the animal and the knowledge that they gained from that particular animal

explanation - (paraphrase what happened in the book and how this applies to Cole):

the wolf dance - Cole saw a lone wolf, and felt like no one helps the wolf, but then realizes that wolves get strength and help from their pack. He learns from the wolf that he needs to help others too, and that he needs to appreciate the help he's gotten and continues to get.

explanation (what happens in the book and how this applies to Cole)

chapter 20 -

the animal dance

the expression of the knowledge learned from that animal

the SB dance

Cole relives the attack, breaking branches like they were bones, he ends pretending to touch the SB. He relives the scene where he learned to trust the SB.

Edwin appears and reappears, but only comes back out when Cole and Garvey don't look for him. Edwin ends his dance by kneeling in front of them. His kneeling could show respect or honor to the SB, or he could be showing that he has mastered what the SB is there to teach him.

chapter 21 -

the animal dance

the expression of the knowledge learned from that animal

the eagle dance

Cole pretends to fly around in the air. He wishes he was an eagle, to stay strong and proud, and see things differently from a distance. He should remember to stay proud of the effort he has made and is making. He should see things from other people's perspectives.

chapter 21 -

the totem

the totem represents ancestry, a story, your search and your past

For Cole...

ancestry - not to make the same mistakes his dad did

his story - violence and aggression

his search - a better attitude, healing

your past - move forward from his bad experiences
