Kindergarten students read Bee-bim Bop by Linda Sue Park

Kindergarten students reported their favorite foods are pasta, pizza, mac n cheese, carrots, sandwiches, chicken,

pancakes, ice cream and broccoli

Most kids have tried some of the ingredients in bee-bim bop, such as eggs,

rice, carrots, garlic, spinach, meat, and onion

Most students said breakfast was their favorite meal

Grade 1 read The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin

• Students realized that something can look ugly, but still be good—like the delicious vegetables in the soup. Thegirl in this book changed her mind aboutugly vegetables once she found out they made delicious soup.

• If grade 1 students had gardens most would grow flowers, but many would grow vegetables such as lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. Some students would grow fruits such as apples!

• Vegetables give you healthy delicious soup! Even though flowers are prettier, you can eat vegetables.

Grade 2 read Sam and The Lucky Money by Karen Chinn

• In this story, Sam gave his own moneyto a poor man. We could tell he was poor because he had no shoes or socksand he was cold and dirty.

• The way Sam spent his money showed he was thoughtful and kind-hearted.

• At the end of the story Sam feels proud, like a good man. He is grateful for what he has.

Grade 3 read The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi

• Most students thought the main character should keep her name!

• Students with unusual names shared their stories:– When I was in preschool, I used to get frustrated because no one

could say my name

• Students debated whether they’d change their name to help people in a different country:– Yes! People could pronounce my name more easily– At our community meetings, we welcome new people and try hard

to say their names correctly– No! it would be confusing to have 2 names

• Students shared stories about where their names came from:– I have my grandma’s name. She died before I was born– My name is from the Bible and means “gift from God”– Many students were named after family members or dear friends

Grade 4 read The Tree of Cranes by Alan Say

• Students decided the mother in this story was celebrating Christmas becauseshe had a pine tree decorated with origami,and candles

• Our favorite holidays are Christmas and Easter

• If we could have a wish it would be for:• A happy life• A fishing rod• A bike• An iPad

• Students realized that kids often don’t fit in when they are new in a school or a neighborhood. It is important to help new students.

• We discussed our special talents, such as making strange voices or making your eyebrows dance
