Maths LO: To solve division problems with remainders.

Look carefully at the question:

On Thursday, Esther collected 37 eggs and collected three times as many on Friday. If the eggs are put in boxes that hold 6 eggs each, how many boxes will Esther need?

What is the question we are being asked? List the calculations that we will need to do in order to get the answer. 37 x 3 = 111 (Friday’s eggs) 111 + 37 = 148 (Friday’s eggs plus Thursday’s eggs) On Thursday and Friday, Esther collected 148 eggs altogether. If the eggs are put in boxes that hold 6 eggs each, how many boxes will Esther need? 148 ÷ 6 = 24 r 4 Have we answered the question? To answer the question, we need to round up. There will be 24 full boxes but we will need an extra box for the leftover 4 eggs. The answer is 25 boxes.

If we reword the question slightly, the answer will be different.

On Thursday, Esther collected 37 eggs and collected three times as many on Friday. If the eggs are put in boxes that hold 6 eggs each, how many full boxes of eggs will Esther have?

The calculations we need to do are exactly the same. No. To answer the question we need to round down. There will be 24 full boxes. Read the questions carefully before answering so that you know whether you will need to round your answer up, or round your answer down.

4. You have agreed to bake 23 bread rolls for the End of Year party. If you can fit 8 rolls in a baking tray, how many trays will you need to bake all the rolls?
