Our Director of the Institute of Distance Education invites you to apply for the 100% Online MEd.

Welcome to the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) at the University of Zambia (UNZA). UNZA, through IDE, has been offering distance education to mainly undergraduate learners since 1966, postgraduate programmes under the distance mode were only introduced in 2014. This innovation provides a unique opportunity for those who may for one reason or another not be able to enrol into full-time programmes, offering learners the convenient combination of education with work and/or family life.

UNZA celebrated 50 years of service and excellence in teaching, research and community outreach in 2016. In that same year, the UNZA Council approved the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Policy to guide/regulate practice of distance learning. One of the key components of the UNZA-IDE ODL Policy is introduction of Information, Communication and Technology (online) platforms as means to improve service delivery to distance learners, which in turn supports the decentralization of IDE activities throughout the country and beyond.

The 100% online Masters of Arts in Education programmes are set to provide an opportunity to go beyond the known educational strategies and pedagogical theories, hence providing leadership to diverse populations in the field of education. Specialists in the fields of Education Administration and Instructional Technology are required to create professionals, researchers and teachers who continue to contribute to the ever-growing dynamic environment of education.

The Master of Arts in Education is designed for students who have an

Undergraduate degree in any academic discipline from an accredited

University and who seek careers in the field of education. The curriculum in

this program focuses on the foundational theories, current research, emerging

trends, and a personalized opportunity for students to pursue a chosen area of

interest. Students will investigate the historical, theoretical, and philosophical

foundations in the field of education to identify a problem, propose a solution,

implement the solution, and communicate the results of their findings. The

Master of Arts in Education provides an opportunity to go beyond the known

educational strategies and pedagogical theories. The core courses in this

program provide the foundation of knowledge and skills that the student will

need to provide leadership to diverse populations in the field of education.

There is growing need for talented professionals in education that are up

to date with new trends in the way education is transforming and evolving.

The demand is also due to the fast pace of technology and the way that it

collaborates with young learners, not to mention how it can facilitate other

types of learning such as vocational training and higher education. Special

needs across the region is also a growing need that needs to be addressed to

close the gap in inclusion. Specialist in the areas of Education Administration

and Instructional Technology are needed to create professionals, researchers

and teachers that continue to contribute to the ever-growing changing

environment of education and that are ready to apply these new trends in

the classroom and in the overall education management to be more efficient

in the overall goal to serve and educate.



The M.Ed. introduces teachers to the design, methodologies and

techniques of scientifically based educational research in making informed

decisions that positively impact student achievement. This program aims

to provide the tools to understand the strengths and structure of learning

communities that develop a culture of change and improvement for

student learning through team building and mentoring.

Graduates of the Masters of Education will be professionals in

education ready to work in private and public environments in

positions ranging from leadership positions at all educational levels

as well as corporate settings to faculty members, educational

researchers, learning coordinators, and many other positions that

become available as the specializations continue to expand and adapt.

Program Objectives

Graduates of the Master of Arts in Education program will be able to:

• Investigate historical, theoretical and philosophical foundations of human

learning with an emphasis on adult learning;

• Develop curriculum, instructional strategies & assessments that leverage

educational resources and emerging technologies in diverse education;

• Apply learning theories and models and engage in reflective practice

regarding curriculum and instruction;

• Utilize pedagogical models, frameworks, and approaches;

• Apply and evaluate assessment models for decision- making related to

student learning;

• Apply principles of legal and ethical decision-making to inform policy

and practice;

• Critically analyze issues of cultural diversity; and

• Apply emotional intelligence, communication and leadership skills in

diverse learning communities.

The M.A in Education consists in twelve (12) full courses and a Master Thesis

to be fulfilled in 18-24 months or 9-12 terms of 8 weeks each plus 4-8 months

for the Master Thesis Completion. All courses with the exception of the

Master These are worth 3 credits each.

The student has the option to follow a Regular Track which consists in

finishing the coursework within 9 terms plus the thesis or the student has

the option to opt for the accelerated or Fast Track which allows the student

to complete his course work in as little as 6-7 terms. The student can study

as well at his own pace and will retain enrollment in the programme with at

least 4 courses per year allowing no more than 2 consecutive idle terms at

any time during enrollment.
