MEME VS REMIX

• Meme: An element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation

• Remix: A piece of me dia which has been altered from its original state by adding, removing, and/or changing pieces of the item.

• Parody: an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.

• Mashup: a recording created by digitally combining and synchronizing instrumental tracks with vocal tracks from two or more different songs.

REMIXING IN MOVIES

• Most box office hits rely on existing material

• Approximately 7 out the top 10 movies of each year are either: • Remakes• Sequels • Adaptations

WHY?

• Why do consumers still find remakes attractive?

• With respect to music, why should I listen to a remade song if I can listen to the original?

• Has the human imagination come to a dead end? Is this why “borrow” from the material that has come before us?

• Is it considered plagiarism? If one person remakes a work, does it make it inherently permissible for anyone to remix the work thereafter?

• How does this differ from academic material? Why cant a student remix a scholarly article?
