Rittal In IT

• Rittal has OEM rack deals with HP, Dell, IBM, Cisco, Hitachi Data System, NEC and Network Appliance.

• OEM cooling contracts with HP, Oracle and Cisco• In 2010 Rittal integrated Lampertz into the IT division in order to strengthen

resources, products and competence in delivering turnkey data centres• The company has experience in delivering more than 3,500 turnkey data

centres globally• On average Rittal delivers150 turnkey data centres per year

Key Data Centre Issues

• Financial– Energy prices continue to rise at an accelerated pace– The cost of powering the DC is now outstripping the

budget for new IT hardware• Speed

– There is a need to ramp up and down infrastructure to deliver processing power as dictated by the user

• Reliability– Average age of DC is 14 years old– IT infrastructure is critical to business operation in most

organisations and many current DC are either under or over engineered

• Efficiency – Increased efficiency reduces costs and ensures

maximum lifetime of components– Social and corporate governance are driving the need

to minimise an organisations carbon footprint

Shifting Expectations In The DC

• Traditional perception is that a DC is a multi-year, site constructed, low density environment

• There is a transition in expectation to where customers expect modular, flexible, scalable and perhaps most importantly rapidly deployable expansions

• Modular, pre-engineered and pre-fabricated building blocks are being deployed to meet the requirements of the new generation of Data Centres

Containerised Data Centre Market

• Data Centres in a container are nothing new– Early solutions were driven by hardware vendors and were powered and

cooled by conventional methods» Clients showed interest in these solutions but really didn’t grasp how they

would fit with existing infrastructure or benefit new applications– Second generation solutions are characterised by their use of air side

economisers which are supplemented by DX or other cooling systems» Clients have now moved from the information gathering to determining

suitability based on a higer level of education

• The market is breaking down into two main offerings– ‘All In One’ self contained pods– Infrastructure Containers

» Data Halls» Power» Cooling» Other

Application Environments

• Remote Locations– Where critical skills may be in short supply– When space may be constrained– Where traditional build-out may be difficult– Examples include remote offices or manufacturing and the mining / resource

market• Temporary DC

– When disaster strikes – fire, flood, earthquake– To address short term increase in demand– For DR sites

• Mobile Data Centre– Defence– TV / Movie production

• Cloud– HPC applications– Point of use locations– Low cost operating environments

Financial Benefits Of A Containerised Approach

• Capital Costs– Higher density deployments require less space– Just in time construction reduces oversizing– Off site fabrication negates potential labour price issues

• Energy Costs– Containerised solutions capable of using the latest technologies to reduce energy

consumption eg air side economizers• Capital Efficiency

– The pay as you grow approach enables easier start up for new projects as businesses can be supported with less capital commitment

• Risk Reduction– Pre-engineered and tested environments reduce the time spent performing

integration activities and gets the facility operational quicker• Investment Protection

– The asset can move with the organisation as and when required – no longer is the investment lost when a move is required

ASHRAE Recommended Envelopes

• The increase in the recommended temperature and humidity envelope in 2008 was done to increase the opportunity to use compressor-less cooling solutions

2004 2008

Low End Temperature 20 deg C 18 deg C

High End Temperature 25 deg C 27 deg C

Low End Moisture 40% RH 5.5 deg C DP

High End Moisture 55% RH 60% RH & 15 deg C

ASHRAE Recommended Envelope 2011

• ASHRAE have been keen to point out that the ‘Recommended’ envelope is one which provides the best reliability with minimum power consumption and best performance

• The drive for an increased use of air side economizers for as many hours per year means that the server inlet temperature may sometimes fall outside of the recommended levels

• The expansion of the ‘Allowable’ envelopes for Class A3 & A4 therefore gives further opportunity for a reduction in the number of hours that compressors are run each year

• Initial research conducted by ASHRAE indicates that there is little or no difference in operational reliability for IT equipment when sited in a data centre that utilises air side economizers
