From the Desk of Father Raaser

There are certain days that will live in infamy: Pearl Harbor, the assassination of President Kennedy, the explosion of the Challenger and tomorrow, September 11th. We all know where we were, what we were doing when the news first came to us at 8:46 AM on that clear and beautiful Tuesday morning. We want to, indeed, need to remember.

Remember the innocents that died that day, the heroes who were created that day; we remember what evil can do to us. But I think the most important thing to remember about 9-11 is what happened after the terrible fact. We as a nation and for a bright shining moment even the world came together—all the differences were gone, and together as one family of humanity we prayed, we helped, the most noble of virtues came alive. Our sense of faith increased, the churches were crowed again, and people went to Mass and prayed the rosary. Life seemed to be changed; the word sacrifice was mentioned, even admired. People realized what was truly important in this life: God, family, nation. Out of the horrible evil, good was emerging. There was hope; a better world was being born. As time went on, however, we forgot, we began to feel secure in our own power and self-reliance, faith and trust in God were forgotten, and sacrifice once again was for the sucker.

Ribbons, candles, even doves can never take the place of God and sincere prayer. The entire event will never make any sense without the eyes of faith. No one will ever give us all the answers we are looking for, but faith tells us that despite the evidence, God is still with His people.

We are called, indeed, to look back, to remember, to give pause to grieve the violence, destruction and death as well as to rejoice the acts of courage, mercy, and solidarity the day and those that followed. But we are also called to look forward, into a future that is not defined by the evil of that day but instead is shaped by hope, possibility, and the grace of God. The essence of forgiveness is the lifting of a burden, the releasing of a debt, the refusal to allow past actions and failures to define the future.

As we remember the events of September 11 a decade and six years ago when four hijacked airplanes wreaked such destruction and evil; neither can we forget the events of 2,016 years ago when God's own Son, surveying a field of broken lives and desolate hearts, chose to call down from heaven forgiveness, not vengeance, and opened a future marked by mercy, trust, and hope. That's what forgiveness can do. May God rest the souls of those who died, and bring peace of soul to their families, most particularly our 81 brothers and sisters from Rockland County.

Try to attend Mass tomorrow and pray for the dead, their families and friends and for peace in our world.

Welcome Back to School

We welcome back to the 64th academic year of our school our Principal, Mrs. Maldonado, our dedicated faculty and staff and our 267 students and their families. May the prayers of St. Thomas Aquinas, patron of schools bless our school family and our benefactors.

Parish Picnic

I hope to see you all next week at our annual Parish picnic. Tickets are available after the Masses this weekend as well as in the Parish Center, and if your other plans change, you can purchase tickets at the Naurashaun Swim Club on Sunday.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Sirach 27:30—28:7 Sirach advises all to forgive the faults of their neighbor. Only by forgiving the sins of others, can a person expect to be forgiven his sins.

Second Reading: Romans 14:7-9 Paul stresses that no one is his own master; we are responsible to the Lord, and we belong to him in both life and death.

Gospel: Matthew 18:21-35 This narrative points out the difference between mercy and justice. When Peter asks how often he should forgive someone who wrongs him, Jesus answers, “…not seven times: I say seventy times seven times.” Jesus then narrates the story of the king who was merciful to his official by forgiving him all his debts, but this same official showed no mercy to his own servant.

Saint Margaret School News…

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL

Our Kindergarten - Grade 8 students officially began the 2017-2018 school year on Thursday, 9/7. However the 11th is when we can excitedly share that all students from PreK - grade 8 are raring to learn.

St. Margaret of Antioch's mission of educating the whole child is to ensure that our students are college, career and heaven ready. We are proud of our Catholic identity that enables us to truly be stewards of the Lord. We look forward to participating in endeavors that deepen our understanding of self as we follow in Christ's footsteps, in addition to using such graces to achieve our academic goals.
