AUGUST is Membership and New Club Development Month in Rotary

Interactors of Holy Spirit launch 2015-16 pementoring program to assist their schomates improve academic performance

One of the major service projects plannedby the Interact Club of Holy Spirit Na-tional High School for Rotary Year 2015-

2016 is Peer Mentoring.The first mentoring class was conducted onJuly 25, 2015 with ten (10) Grade 7 stu-dents who had been referred by their advis-ers as having difficulties in certain subjects.The students were given review lessons inMath, Science and English by Grade 7 In-teractors assisted by senior Interactorsfrom Grades 9 and 10.

On August 1, 2015, the second mentoringclass was conducted, this time attended by

twenty (20) Grade 7 students. Their men-tors came well-prepared with posters andquiz notes. The students with the highestscores were given tokens by the mentors.Both mentors and students partook ofsnacks provided by RCHS.

The peer mentoring or tutoring classes arebeing scheduled two (2) weeks before andtwo (2) weeks after the students’ periodicalexaminations (the first one slated week of

August 3, 2015). These classes will beheld in August 2015, October 2015 and

January 2016.

During the first two mentoring classes, offi-cers of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit Na-tional High School led by President Jan-nelle Larbio were grouped to provide assis-tance to the junior mentors depending ontheir academic or subject proficiency. Theywill be monitoring the progress of the stu-dents tutored to ensure that they keep up tospeed with their class.Youth Service Chair PP Marcia Salvador

RC Holy Spirit in partnership with PepetGrill sponsored the livelihood skills trainseminar on "Food & Beverage Services some 33 participants last July 27 & 28, 20

at Pepetons Grill.

The participants who passed the assessmdone by TESDA were given certificates licenses acknowledged both here and abrothat is valid for 5 years.

July 26, 2015 was a red-letter day for the Interact Club ofHoly Spirit National High School, Rotaract Club of HolySpirit and Rotaract Club of Central Institute of Technol-ogy. The day marked the formal change-over of leader-ship of the three (3) clubs. This annual joint event which

s part of the leadership development program spon-sored by the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit for its young part-ners in service was held at the Don Enrique Heightsclubhouse.

After the emotional valedictory addresses of the youngBest Class Presidents, RCHS Youth Service Chair PPMarcia Salvador presented the new officers for RY 2015-2016 who were then inducted into office by District YouthService Chair PP Benjie Tan Alonzo with assistancerom Rotaract District Chair Adel Corpuz and District Ro-

taract Representative Patrick Hermoso. Youth ServChair Doc Benjie shared a truly inspiring message the young Interactors and Rotaractors which is relevato grown-up Rotarians as well. Doc Benjie was gifwith a painting done by Interactor artist Rainer Palmia

handed to him by RCHS WC Pres Angel Castro and Kier Berce.

Good Afternoon! I would like totake this opportunity to commendthe Rotary Club of Holy Spirit forbeing awarded as the Most Out-standing Club in Youth Service forthe past 2 years. Your labor is not

in vain. When you invest your time, talent and treasure on ouryouth, you also invest in the future of your Rotary Club and in thefuture of our country as well. And I think unti-unti nyo ng nakikitayan… some of your Interactors are already Rotaractors and whoknows, 5 to 10 years from now, your Rotaractors will be your fel-low Rotarians. It happened in our club and in other clubs whosponsored Rotaract Clubs, it will surely happen to you as well.

It is such a pleasure to be with you all on the occasion of yourJoint Induction. Rotaractors and Interactors, your sponsoring Ro-tary Club, the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit is so proud of you. Theyare all praises when it comes to the kind of service you extendand they are very glad that all of you are their partners in service.For that, give yourselves a round of applause. etong mga sasabihin ko sayo ay tipong payong kaibigan o na-kakatandang kapatid lamang . Just a few pointers that I hope you’llalways remember.

Since this is a Joint Rotaract and Interact Induction I want you toremember 4Rs and 3Is. Makinig kayong mabuti . May prizemamaya ang makakapagsabi sakin ng 4Rs and 3Is.

What are the 4 Rs you will learn or gain in this organization? FirstR is Respect. In order to get respect, you have to give it and not just to the elders and the higher-ups, but to everyone. You respectthe opinion of other people. Listening is one way of showing youare respecting the person. Lalo na ngayon, sometimes we are tooinvolved with our cellphone, na when someone is talking to us, wedon’t look at the person and listen. Oo lang ng oo minsan kasi

busy sa Clash of Clans pero pag tinanong mo kung naintindihanyung sinabi, hindi pala. So guys, do you understand what I’m try-ing to tell you about respect? Good! Diba masarap kapag pinakik-inggan ka?. And this also avoids misunderstanding kase whenyou are really paying attention, you can clarify or validate if tamaba pagkakaintindi mo.

Second is Responsibility. You will have a sense of responsibilitywhen you are involved in Rotaract or Interact. When you are work-ing on a project, there will be tasks assigned to you and you needto be responsible and reliable enough to finish it. Rotaract andInteract will keep you busy with worthwhile activities and events.

Third is Rituals. O baka sabihin nyo, ano ba tong nasalihan ko,may ritwal ? Let me assure you that our rituals are not something

weird or scary. Have you heard about the statement, “That is how

we do things around here”? Rituals is about how we do things.What makes us Rotary or Rotaract or Interact is on the way we dothings. The way we do our induction, our District Assembly, Dis-trict Conference, our regular meetings, fellowships and our projects is what makes us stand out and different from other organi-zations. Also, there are certain protocols that we follow in Rotaryand you’ll eventually realize later on that these protocols were putinto place so that things will be orderly. Standards and protocolsare the guidelines of operation in communication or in a formalsetting. Nowadays the ability to interact quickly and efficiently isconsidered the cornerstone of any organization or business. Perohayaan na natin ang inyong District Secretary to explain to youmore about protocols.

Let me move on to the last R. Relationship. The most importantR that you’ll develop is Relationship. In Rotaract and Interact,you’ll build relationships that are meant to last. In Rotary, we arenot just an organization, we are a family. We don’t believe in dis-pensable relationships. In this family we will meet mentors or bigbrothers and big sisters who can offer us valuable pieces of ad-vice. We will also meet people with the same interests or hobbiesand you know what they say about birds with the same feathers...yes, they fly together. And if you’re blessed, just like my daughterwho is a former Rotaractor, you might find your lifetime partnerhere. Pero saka na yon, mga bata pa kayo. Ika nga nila, study firsbefore love. So those are my 4Rs – Respect, Responsibility, Ritu-als and Relationships.

Ano naman ang 3 Is that you need to develop in order to grow in

this organization? First Be Inspired. Do things passionately andwhen I say passionately I mean with energy, enthusiasm andpositivity. You should not be hindered by your status in life, yourcircumstances, and your lack in experience or wisdom. Instead beinspired by the lives of those people who have humble begin-nings. If they can rise above the challenges of poverty, dysfunc-tional family, some wrong decisions, surely you can also do that.Do not limit yourself. When you dream, dream big… not just foryourself but for the people you love and the people that you wantto help.

Second Be Involved. Don’t just be a fence sitter or a wallflower.We are all meant to shine so go out there, and don’t be afraid todo the “dirty job”. Willingly extend your helping hands, not just tothe Rotarians, but more importantly, to those poverty-stricken

communities who need help. Let me borrow the words of the ac-tivists, Kung hindi tayo, sino? Kung hindi ngayon, kailan? It’s bet-ter when everyone is involved and when we all work together.

And lastly Be Innovative. In this day and age, we need to thinkoutside of the box. Hindi pwede yung ituloy lang natin ito paramadali. If you think you can improve something, be brave enoughto voice it out and suggest. Initiate change and be resourceful.Introduce and implement new ideas. When there are obstaclesand challenges, that’s actually the time to be creative and createsolutions. But do not be afraid to make mistakes knowing that nextime you will be able to get it right.

So those are my 3 Is. Be inspired, be involved and be innovative.To make it short, Be a gift to the world! Thank you and Mabuhay

As PP Marcia Salvador watches, Alyan Silos receivesrom FCP Dr Eui Bong Jung an educational assistancerant to help defray her expenses for the next 3 months.

The monthly stipend is being provided by Atty Park andmembers of his law firm in Korea. FCP Atty Park is amember of RC Sae Gwangju D3710, sister club of HolySpirit in Korea.

From a less fortunate family, Alyan graduated last March015 at the top of her class with the distinct honor ofValedictorian” of the Holy Spirit National High School.

She is now taking up BS Chemistry at the Universitthe Philippines in Diliman QC. A former Interactor, Ais now a member of the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit.

The other equally outstanding young lady in the pictuResha Avelino, immediate past president of the InteClub of Holy Spirit National High School and of thepreme Student Government (SSG) of the school withrolment of over 4,000. Resha is now a member of thetaract Club of Holy Spirit, too.

Holy Spirit members also continue to provide scholarships and educational as

sistance to deserving youth, such as the following for example:

Free tuition scholarships for deserving students enrolled in 2-year courses such as computer programming at Ctral Institute of Technology. Honorary RCHS member PP Edmund Chiu has started to sponsor four (4) scholars

Four-year college scholarship grant covering tuition, matriculation & miscellaneous fees, books and school sup-plies provided by PP Marcia Salvador. A Rotaractor of Holy Spirit taking up BS HRM has been enjoying this scharship since SY 2012-13.

Sponsorship by BCP Marites Nepomuceno of eight (8) needy children through the World Vision Philippines, aChristian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to reach their

potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice and help communities become self-sufficient.

Foundation Chairman’s August 2015 Messa

The Rotary Foundation has traditioused a few annual goals to guide itplanning for the next Rotary year. Hever, there is a more comprehensivplan in place for the current Rotaryyear. At their October 2014 meetingthe Trustees utilized the spirit of thestrategic plan by approving four prioties to stay in place for the next threyears:

changed each year as progress is made on achievemof the priorities, but for the current year our course is sand for the first time, it is measurable!

I will be sharing some of the goals with you in future etions, but it is worth noting that the advent of measuragoals for the Foundation came at a propitious time. RIPresident K.R. Ravindran is a proponent of key perforance indicators (KPIs) for the work of Rotarians in leaship positions, and the new measurable goals made itmuch easier to develop some KPIs for our regional RoFoundation coordinators and endowment/major gift ad

ers. The KPIs are still an experiment, and they will neerefinement and development, but they are a step in thright direction as we try to take a longer look ahead eayear!

Today, 24 July 2015, marks one year since Nigeria last re-ported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting thecountry on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.

The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northernstate of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks,the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nige-ria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The conti-nent is poised to reach its own first full year without any ill-ness from the virus on 11 August.

“Every Rotarian in the world should be proud of thisachievement,” says Rotary International President K.R. Rav-indran. “We made history. We have set Africa on course fora polio-free future. But we have not yet reached our goal ofa polio-free world. Raising funds and awareness and advo-cating with your government are more crucial than ever.”

Progress in Nigeria has come from many measures, includ-ing strong domestic and international financing, the commit-ment of thousands of health workers, and new strategiesthat reached children who had not been immunized earlierbecause of a lack of security in the northern states.

“Rotary’s commitment has been the number one reason forthe recent success in Nigeria,” says Dr. Tunji Funsho, chairof Rotary’s Nigeria PolioPlus Committee. “We have infectedpolitical leaders with this commitment. The government hasdemonstrated this with political support and financial and

human resources. And

that went down the linefrom the federal level, tothe state, to the localgovernments.”

Nigeria has increasedits domestic funding forpolio eradication almostevery year since 2012and has allocated $80

million for the effort this year.

Funsho also applauds religious leaders who championethe vaccination efforts to families in their communities.

Despite the historic gains in Nigeria, health experts are cautious about declaring victory. Funsho says the Global PolEradication Initative partners must strengthen routine immunization especially in hard-to-reach areas, in addition tboosting sensitive surveillance to prevent resurgence of thdisease. If no new cases are reported in the next two yearNigeria, along with the entire Africa region, will be certifiepolio-free.

“The virus can be introduced from anywhere where it is stendemic, particularly now in Afghanistan and Pakistan, intareas that haven’t had polio in years,” Funsho says. “It important we keep the immunity level in Nigeria to at lea

In June, Rotary announced $19 million in grants for continued polio eradication activities in Africa, including almo$10 million for Nigeria. Since 1985, when Rotary launchePolioPlus, the program that supports the organization’s poleradication efforts, its worldwide monetary contributions tthe cause have exceeded $1.4 billion.

“We’ve come a long way and have never been so close teradicating polio in Nigeria and around the world, but it’s noa time to fully celebrate,” says Funsho. “We have some grueling years ahead of us before WHO can certify Nigeria an Africa polio-free.
