Tarang Success Story MIDAS – Making an Impacting Difference at Schools - In the realm of the externally focused long term initiatives we have taken up school education & health covering cover socially disadvantaged children as our focus area. Our interventions presently cover children in 10 government primary schools (MIDAS). Mission To enhance the academic status of disadvantaged children by improving their learning levels, improving infrastructure at schools, motivating and incentivizing parents, teachers and students for success, providing health care and social inclusivity. Social Inclusivity
Social Inclusivity is very important as it gives disadvantaged children an idea of how it feels to be successful, and gives them the confidence to try. Thus we exploit every opportunity to throw the children and our associates together. We bring the children periodically to our office, where they see the work environment & interact with associates. The children participate with our associates in various events of ADP like Company Day, Family Day, Independence Day & Republic Day. Various aspects of our life are touched by the children – we decorate the office with pictures drawn by them, and our desk calendars are designed from the pictures. Our senior leaders in India and US frequently visit the schools and interact with the children.
What Did We Achieve?
Improvement in learning levels as measured by third party (Educational Initiatives) & attendance
o About 5% overall in 2008-09 o About 15% overall in 2009-10 o About 30% between baseline & end line in 2009-10 o About 38% between baseline & end line in 2010-11 and 2011-12
Constant increase in enrollment with a huge jump of Rs 40% (from 1300 to 1800) in year 2010-11
Big improvement in the infrastructure, appearance & functioning of the schools after we took over. Now all the schools look neat & bright, and have running water, drinking water & functioning toilets.
ADP funded and installed a special type of Sulabh toilet in Bandlaguda School in 2010, and a solar pump in Gnanodaya Sangham school in 2011.
Parvathinagar school has been upgraded to a high school last year.
One of our schools (Gnanodaya Sangham) won the Design for Giving Award in 2009 for their initiative in improving their environment by involving government agencies & the community.
The MIDAS program received much attention in our US locations. This has led to our US counterparts starting a similar program for inner city schools in New York.
Having noticed their success in MIDAS schools, Government adopted the techniques & workbooks of the Cooperative Reflexive Methodology in the entire Hyderabad educational region last year.
