· Range Rover introduced to North American market, incorporating as standard features the 3.5 liter V8 catalyst engine (‘31D’ unit), automatic transmission and air conditioning.

VIN Suffix JA(1988 model year)

· Girling brake master cylinder and servo replace Lockheed designs.· Mid-model year introduction: new expansion tank set up in cooling system.· Tilt and slide steel sunroof introduced as option (roof panel has ribs removed

from forward section to accommodate sunroof).

VIN Suffix KA(1989 model year)

· 3.9 liter engine (‘38D’ unit) introduced. Other changes as a result include a new oil cooler system, radiator, engine controls and fuel injection control system.

· New exhaust system with two catalysts (previously three).· Borg Warner transfer box replaces LT230 type; new handbrake design to

· (ABS) brake system introduced, along with ventilated rotors. This feature was standard on all North American spec. vehicles.

· Non-ABS axle assembly design modified, denoted by suffix B instead of A after axle number (suffix B axle phased in gradually over period of several months).

· Another new expansion tank set up in the cooling system.· New design of two catalyst exhaust system.· New air conditioning receiver drier, condenser and pump.· New instrument cluster with electronic speedometer introduced.· Leather trim standardized.· Self-dipping rear view mirror introduced.· High-level stop lamp introduced on modified upper tailgate.

· Plastic fuel tank introduced, accompanied by new sender unit, fuel pump, filler pipework and filler flap.

· Front and rear anti-roll bars standardized (except Hunter model)—spring rates softened as a result.

· Heated door locks introduced.

Engine misfire or stumble under accelera-tion or load may be caused by a poor connec-tion in the diagnostic connector under the rightseat, adjacent to the ECU on the Range Rover.

The pins on the female side of the plugtend to open up and need to be crimpedtighter. Clean the pins with contact cleanerand reconnect. Secure with a nylon wire tie toprevent a recurrence.

Do you get stuck in park? Better check your brake lights.If your Rover with ABS brakes is stuck in park, the prob-lem may not be your transmission. It may only be yourbrake light switch. As a safety device, you must depressthe brake before you shift out of park. When the switchfails, the solenoid in your transmission won’t let youshift out of park, so you’re stuck.

Here is a simple way to test it: turn on the key anddepress the brake pedal. Have someone see if the brakelights come on. If they don’t, you need a new switch.

If you must move the vehicle temporarily, you can tryalternately pressing on the brake pedal while shifting outof park, leaving the car in neutral, of course.

We’ve encountered this problem from ’92 RangeRovers beginning Vin # NA620457. If you need a newswitch, call us right away and we’ll get it to you the nextday, if you like. Order Rover part #AMR2010. The brakeswitch is located on the pedal and is the top switch (thebottom one is cruise.)

Suspension & SteeringAny sign of imprecision or rough handling in your Rovershould be looked into immediately. Its’ combination ofnimbleness and heaviness can be particularly tough onshocks, brakes and steering. Don’t take chances. At thefirst sign of trouble, have the problem diagnosed, thencall us for all the parts you need to make it right. Toomuch “road feel” is not a good thing.


If you loose a bump stop, your air suspen-sion system will allow the car to drop too lowand the level sensor will be damaged. Sensorscost $200, so be sure to have them checkedwhen you have your vehicle serviced.

If your Classic has ABS brakes and your ABS warninglight comes on and stays on, you may have a bad relay.The relays are located under the drivers seat behind theseat surround and under the left seat track. The centerrelay is usually the one that causes the false signal. Thereplacement valve relay is part # PRC9603 on page 50under ABS Sensors.
