Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Creekside,

The Washington Post and Newsweek Magazine released its list of “Most Challenging” and “Best High Schools” in America. CHS is listed prominently in both!

The Academy of Environmental and Urban Planning at Creekside High School (CHS) has earned national distinction as a Model Career Academy. This is the highest designation awarded by the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) and brings the total number of model academies within the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) to four.

Student Leader Megan Cromwell (2012 Ms. Creekside) has expanded her platform of suicide prevention. Megan has been invited to Washington, D.C. to serve as a field advocate on the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Megan will use her access on Capitol Hill to meet with Representatives and Senators discussing the importance of mental health issues in our nation.

CHS Athletic Boosters recently hosted the Third Annual Running of The Knights. This annual event witnessed over 700 participants engaging in the Centipede Race, One Mile Fun Run and the featured 5K. Truly the Running of The Knights is centered on Fitness, Family and Community.

Alexa Parsons, a senior is a recent recipient of First Coast News $1,000 Scholarship. Alexa was voted by her peers as “Most likely to Become President.” She serves as a Youth Commissioner with the Florida Children and Youth Cabinet. Alexa is active in a variety of school and community organizations, always willing to pitch-in and be of service.

Congratulations to CHS Athletics as both the Baseball and Softball Teams have garnered tremendous accolades; both are making it to the Final Four. The Lady Knights played in the State Championship and finished as Runner-ups. The Baseball team is competing for a shot at the State Championship game.

In closing, I leave you a quote from George Washington Carver: “… new developments are the products of a creative mind, we must therefore stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every way ...”

Let’s be a blessing to others,

Sincerely,

Hispanic Honor Society The Hispanic Honor Society is wrapping up another very successful year! The club has been very busy. On April 20th, Creekside’s Interact Club hosted the Suicide Prevention event: Out of the Darkness. The event was sponsored and organized in large part by HHS member Megan Cromwell. HHS is so proud of her hard work and determination. We hosted a booth and sold our famous quesadillas during the event. An HHS favorite is our tutoring program at Julington Creek Elementary School. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, several HHS tutors at JCE held a “field morning” with their classes, during which they played games and worked on crafts. The students truly have enjoyed their year of Spanish with our tutors!

The HHS Senior Award and New Member Induction Ceremony were held on Thursday, May 2. HHS awarded twenty-one stoles and twenty-six honor chords. The recipients have provided tremendous service in and outside of the club and have demonstrated a true dedication to the Spanish language. Congratulations to all of our seniors! During the ceremony we also handed out certificates for the National Spanish Exam and announced the recipients of the HHS Scholarships. Diana Gomez, Sarah Mountfort and Kelli Cavalari each received a $200.00 scholarship from HHS for their outstanding essay performance. We also had the honor of inducting 53 new members to our club. We are looking forward to next year! HHS also celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week. As a token of our appreciation for all of our teachers and staff who have worked so hard for us, the club held a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday May 7th. Finally, this quarter we also held our Spanish Department’s annual field trip. This year, the Spanish 2, 3, AP Spanish Language, and AP Spanish Literature classes took a fieldtrip to St. Augustine. Spanish 1 and 2 visited the fort and had lunch at the Spanish Bakery, while the upper level classes visited the Picasso Exhibit at the Visitor’s center and had the opportunity to view several of the famous Spanish painter’s works. The tours were offered in Spanish. The students also had the opportunity to admire a piece selected for the exhibit done by our very own Spanish 3 student artist, Parul Marulendra. To everyone from the Hispanic Honor Society: have a great summer and we will see you next year!
