Even in a lackluster economy, with projected growth of less than 2% in 2016, there

is still a relatively healthy demand for engineers both to replace retiring Baby Boomers

and to accommodate the gradually improving investment climate driving capital

expenditures and infrastructure spending. It is projected that the retirement of older

engineers will especially increase demand for civil, mechanical, electrical/electronic, and

computer engineers over the next few years.

Any assessment of salaries for engineers must of necessity start with a forecast of demand for the

professionals within the various engineering specialties. The demand for engineers is primarily driven by

the health of the manufacturing sector and growth in investment in public and private infrastructure. The

growth – or lack of growth – in these sectors will drive the demand for engineering talent and therefore

affect their salaries. Within the sectors, there will be variation by engineering discipline and geography.

Here are some general industry sector observations:

    Manufacturing

Last year Canadian manufacturing employed 1.7 million people and accounted for around 11% of

growth in GDP. The outlook for growth in demand for engineering talent in the manufacturing sector is

uncertain, but forecasts tend to discount the sector’s near-term role as a consistently vibrant job engine.

While many manufacturers recognize the need to increase their investments in technology and processesto compete globally, reinvestment rates are sluggish. Weakness in the Canadian dollar exchange rate is

somewhat an obstacle as it makes imported equipment more expensive. While globally manufacturers

intend to increase their R&D/new product development initiatives 32% in 2016, for Canadian

manufacturers that figure is only 17%.

    Infrastructure

The vitality of demand for engineers in the infrastructure sector varies greatly by geography. In the West,

declining oil prices have put a brake on infrastructure investment growth. In eastern Canada, private

investment might drive healthier demand for a variety of engineering disciplines. Even in the face of

overall sluggish business investment, there are bright spots. In 2015-2016, Infrastructure Canada plans to

spend over $3.6 billion on infrastructure investments. Planned spending figures for 2016-2017 and 2017-

2018 are just over $3.8 billion and $3.5 billion respectively.

    Eastern Canada outlook

Engineering construction in Toronto will be healthy especially in the utility and transportation industries.

Non-residential building permits in Toronto are expected to decline 3% in 2016 but anticipated to

rebound in 2017. The Ontario unemployment rate is below the national average for the first time since

2006. Those engineering disciplines anticipated to be most in demand in eastern Canada over the next

5 years include metallurgical and materials engineers, mining engineers, aerospace engineers, computer

    engineers, and software engineers.

    Western Canada outlook

Right now, it is anticipated that job growth in the West will trail job growth in the East. Investment in the

oil and gas industries has stalled; however, there are growing opportunities for engineers in robotics and

software development. Over the next 5 years, it is anticipated that civil engineers, mining engineers, andgeological engineers will be the most demanded engineering disciplines in western Canada.

the key work skills engineers will need over the next10 yearsIn its publication Agility Quotient – Developing the Future in Today’s Workforce, Randstad assessed

information gathered by The Institute for the Future on the key work skills employers will find important

for their organizations. Those soft skills identified as being the most important for workers in technologyand engineering were found to be novel & adaptive thinking, sensemaking and social intelligence.

    novel & adaptive thinking

Apple’s mission statement is: “We believe in challenging the status quo. We believe in thinking

differently.” Thinking differently makes perfect sense in all industries and businesses. Things change

very quickly, and organizations and workers who want to remain relevant and competent have to keep

learning, looking ahead, and understanding new realities if they are to create value.

    sensemaking

Sensemaking is all about the ability to “connect the dots” to generate ideas. In a Forbes article discussing

skills of the future, writer Reuven Gorsht quotes Maria Popova, the mind behind Brain Pickings, a very

popular content curation platform, who explains the notion of Sensemaking: “In order for us to truly

create and contribute to the world, we have to be able to connect countless dots, to cross-pollinate ideasfrom a wealth of disciplines, to combine and recombine these pieces and build new castles.”

    social intelligence

Social intelligence is not just about being nice to people (although being nice does help develop

good relationships), but about understanding people’s emotional triggers. In an era where the focus

is on individuals (think self-improvement books, self-made entrepreneurs, selfies), there are as many

motivations as there are people. Social intelligence deals with the ability to take a more human approach

to business, connect and engage in a meaningful and personal manner, and ask the right questions.

    can soft skills be learned?

The good news is that when both employers and job seekers were asked if there were ways for

individuals to develop and improve soft skills, the vast majority (92%) believes that there are. This should

be instructive for engineers looking to make themselves more attractive to potential employers.

    skills of your employees.
