    WOW Ramadan is near! 46

As salamu alaikum! May peace be upon you all!

In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful and peace and blessing be upon his final messenger. This is the tenth edition of the Ramadan Guide 1437AH / 2016. It is an honour and a privilege to welcome you

to the most anticipated month in the Islamic Calendar. This very month, the final revelation (Al Qur’an) from Allah was sent down, to connect heaven and earth for the last time with His final message & guide for

humanity. It’s a month for us to recharge our souls and refocus our life towards the unlimited permanentlife, the Akhira.

In a busy world of constant material chase, Muslims in UK and globally must keep Allah alive in our wordsand deeds, in open and secret - this is the true purpose and goal of fasting and Ramadan, anything less is

indeed a sad loss. As the God conscious, Al - Muttaqoon! Let’s remember our service to humanity is service to the Creator.

As viewers, and supporters of Europe’s No 1 British Bangladeshi Channel and the choice ofcharitable giving, we cannot thank Allah and you all enough. Together we will keep pushing British

& Western Bangladeshis to make their individual and collective mark. Channel S has done thismany a times, Ramadan is where you break records to support needy causes in UK, Europe and globally.

Though we celebrated Bangladeshi cricket in the T20 and Nadiya Hussain’s royal baking in2016 but we cannot forget the world’s tragedy and despair. Be it the senseless, criminal acts

of violence in France and Brussels, the plight of refugees in Europe or the ongoing injusticetowards the Syrian people.

Our duty and responsibility as a media outlet will be timely and consistent; Channel Sand you together are known to be Europe’s most generous. This coming Ramadan is

    another opportunity to give millions.

With your prayers, feedback and support we’ll maintain transparency, accountability and trust especially with your donations, ensuring your generosity

is only with whom you and we know and trust.

This Ramadan Guide will not only guide your charitable giving but inspire eachone of us (especially our young, to get them involved with our ‘Big@Heart’ fundraising challenge) to prepare, plan and work for a life changing

    Ramadan.

Let us remember those no longer with us since last Ramadan through good work (Sadqah al Jaariya) becoming a means of Allah’s mercy and

     forgiveness for all.

Allah, forgive me and you; ac cept our prayers, including the nightlywhispers with humble hearts. Allah give us all Tawfiq and divine strength to make the most of possibly our final Ramadan, especially

for a connection with his final revelation, Al Qura’an revealed on aodd night in the last ten days of Ramadan. O Allah, do not leave us

to ourselves without your guidance for the blinking of an eye – Ameen.

    Ramadan Mubarak!

“He has succeeded who purifies himself, remembers the name of his Lord, and prays.”(Surat al-A’la 87:14)

We need to do righteous deeds to purifyour souls. We need to act for the benefit ofthe world, for everyone. This is the methodby which we purify ourselves internallylike we cleanse our body with water andsoap externally. If we do not have a friendlyrelationship with others, we cannot havesocial harmony, happiness and peace. Butbecause of our greed, we have developedan aggressive, exploitative relationship with

others. That greed burns up the whole earthas we can see in natural disasters and humanconflicts, wars.

In recent history, migration has been a factof life. Millions of people are leaving theircountries to escape human rights abuses, such as torture, persecution, armed conflict, extreme poverty and even death. They areuniquely vulnerable, without the usualsupport structures most of us take for granted.Everyday we are witnessing an increasing

number of vulnerable migrants. Around 1,700refugees and migrants died trying to cross theMediterranean in January-April 2015 alone.People in poverty are wailing across the globe– striving for food, clothes and shelter. Someof them do not have two meals a day, some

“Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come

to know each other. The noblest among you in Allah's sight is the one who best performs his duty (one with the most

    taqwa). Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Surat al-Hujurat: 13)

     Are we performing our duties?

Are we caring for each other? Are we doing the righteous

    deeds in our everyday life?

Life – the transitory one, like

a daffodil. In this short span

of living in this world, are we

    too much obsessed with the

    worldliness? With greed? With

    malice, envy, and arrogance?

Are we following the principle of

     sharing, of sacrifice, of mutual

     self-giving? Do we realise that

    when we cook for ourselves,

    without caring for others and

without sharing it with who need

it most, we eat nothing but sin?

Our greed makes us sin against

    ourselves. Whatever we are

    doing, we ourselves are going

to reap the fruits thereof. It is

better for us to do what is right

so that we will not be harmed.

If we do not work in a selfless

spirit, our own actions willbecome our enemy. We are

behaving either as our own fiend

    or our own friend.

do not have clothes to wear, and someare struggling to protect themselves fromthe clutches of severe cold. The situationof violence in different parts of the worldhas worsened as well as natural and man-made disasters taking place in differentcountries.

But are we caring for the people in destitutesituation by disasters, ethnic cleansing andunjust war in different countries?

For the first time since the World War IIera, the number of refugees worldwide

including Syrian, Palestinian, Iraqi,Ukranian, Egyptian, African, Afgan,Rohingya refugees has passed 50 million, the United Nations announced in itsannual Global Trends Report. We areliving in an age of the crudest paradoxes:unbelievable wealth amidst unbelievablepoverty; record levels of food amidstrecord levels of hunger; and the paradoxof rising economic growth alongside risinglevels of poverty.

But we have the power to change ourlives, and the lives of those around us. Allthey need is a little help. Our moral dutyalways should be to act in ways that willmaximise human happiness and minimisehuman suffering. A society can flourish

only when its members do not spend alltheir wealth to fulfil their own desires butreserve a portion of it for parents, relatives, neighbours, the poor and the debilitated. Asthe saying goes, ‘Charity begins at home’. Atrue believer is thus always prepared, aftermeeting the needs of their family, to assistother people in need of their help. Thus thespirit of kindness and well wishing is the

essence of charity. The giver is not to expectany reward from the beneficiary, as thereawaits for him an abundant reward fromAllah – material, moral and spiritual.

The British Bangladeshis have alwaysbeen extending their hands with the truespirit of helping others in need. They havenot limited their charity work only inwar-torn and disaster-stricken countries, but played a significant role in the socialreform of the people of their home country

Bangladesh. They have established manysocial, educational, cultural, charity andhumanitarian organisations one after anotherfor the orphans, unemployed, vulnerablestreet children, and homeless people. Therole of the Bangladeshi community to set anexample to come forward in promotion ofIslam and to extend a hand of compassionin the welfare of people in need has alreadygained global recognition.

The Qur'an encourages the Muslim todonate their funds:“the likeness of those who spend their wealthin the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grainthat sprouts seven spikes. In every spike thereare 100 grains, and Allah multiplies for whomHe will” (2:261).

Giving charity is thereby not seen asdetracting from income, but rather asa multiplication in terms of spiritualobservance. When one spends in the way ofAllah, he or she receives in return (reward inthe Hereafter) on the scale of one to seven

    hundred.

In keeping with the social reform, ChannelS has been maintaining its position asthe Channel of choice for about ten yearswhen it comes to charity during themonth of Ramadan. Mosques, educationalestablishments, humanitarian institutesand international charities continue tomake Channel S their first choice to extendto the communities in Britain, Europeand the United States. This is mainly

because Channel S has firmly upheld itsethos of providing a platform for charityorganisations to demonstrate their worktransparently throughout the year.

    •  Always before starting a charityprogramme a very skilled team of ChannelS use to visit every organisation more thanonce to see their activities.

    •  The expert team use their won way ofhaving a clear sense of financial transactionsof the relevant institution.

    •  Apart from the Live Appeal programmethe team gives support and advice fromtheir own experience on every details offundraising.

    •  A Ramadan Magazine is published every year to introduce and highlight differentdetails of an organisation to ensuretransparency and accountability

    •  To facilitate the preparation of fundraisingprior to the month of Ramadan, Channel

S provides each of the organisations/institutions with training and technicalguidelines called Fundraising Guidance Pack.

    •  To find out whether the money collectedfrom Live Ramadan Appeal has been spentproperly the television observes the on-going activities after the month of Ramadanand broadcast a special live program calledCharity in Progress.

Over the past 9 years, the most populartelevision of the community, Channel S hasbeen working tirelessly pouring out itselffor humanitarian and social activities or toaid social reformation. The television hasbeen involved in various social activities andwelfare of the suffering people in Bangladeshand many countries around the world:

    •  Channel S provided aid of almost £1million last year to the victims of the mostterrible religious conflict in recent memory, the Rohingya Muslims.

    •  To promote the teaching of the HolyQur’an, Channel S successfully held its thirdnationwide Qiraat competition, Q Factor3 and distributed the Qur’an translatedin Bangla and Nepalese language in India,Nepal, the United Kingdom and around theworld.

    •  Provided humanitarian assistance to

the disaster areas of different parts of theworld including Nepal, Haiti, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine,Syria, Iraq, Ethiopia, Central Africa, Sudanand Afghanistan.

    •  Provided assistance to the developmentand establishment of schools andeducational institutions including mosquesand madrasas in England, Ireland, Canada,Italy, Germany, and Australia.Arranged iftaar and sahri in the month of

Ramadan and Qurbani in Eid-ul-Adha for thepoor in many countries around the world.

    •  Jointly with Ibrahim College launched anew Umrah and fundraising project calledMakka Twin Peaks Challenge.

We need to remember, which is spent inthe way of Allah should be clean, pure andhalal (lawful). Spender should be good inintentions and righteous in deeds. The one towhom Sadaqah (charity) is given should alsobe deserving of it. It should not be wastedby spending on the non-deserving. That iswhy Channel S Television gives high priorityto the transparency and accountability incharity work.

The success of charities on Channel S canonly be truly attributed to the continuousgenerosity of its viewers who have respondedto each and every call. Allah said:

“But the righteous one will avoid Hellfire, who gives from his wealth to purify himself.”

    (Surah Al-Layl 92:17-18)

And Allah said: Take from their wealth acharity by which you cleanse them and purifythem, and invoke blessings upon them. (Surah At-Tawbah 92:103)

When we give away our wealth in charity, this removes worldliness from our heartsand envy of what others have and it makesus hope for our good deeds stored in theHereafter. Let us ask Allah to bless us with

the ability to reap maximum reward in thisholy month of Ramadan with the ability toadorn the heart with spiritual virtues suchas generosity, compassion, benevolence, humility, and asceticism. Ameen.

Muslim Charity was established in 1999 with a group of volunteers and today weare partners with United Nations (UNRWA). We have always taken initiatives witha diverse range of projects which have been beneficial to communities around theworld. We do not just deliver our projects but work for the dignity of the communities,

and this commitment has been unshakable. To achieve our goals we have got a strongnetwork of partners, which are local organisations of the communities we work for.Following this structure, we try and reach out at the root cause and try to mitigate it.We work majorly for Maternal Health, Women Livelihood, Water, Orphans and lastbut not the least, for the Street Children in Bangladesh.

One of the most important and crucial ongoing projects of Muslim Charity inBangladesh are the "Street Children Project". We are rescuing children from the streetsand bringing them to a shelter, which we have established in Sadarghat, Dhaka. Weare giving these street children education, clothes, food, hygiene and sanitation anda safe place to sleep to avoid them being abused or trafficked. We are also providingthem psychosocial treatment and trying to reunite them with their parents. We arealso sponsoring their education to secure them in the future. We want to give themthe chance that every child deserves.Under Honouring Our Mothers campaign we are working for maternal health aroundthe globe. Besides having five established maternity hospitals in Pakistan, we areproviding incubators, ambulances, safe deliveries and Fistula treatment in variousparts of the world. In Bangladesh, we have recently supported and sponsored CMHin Dhaka for heart surgeries for children born with heart problems. Besides that wehave joined hands with Friendship, a renowned organisation in Bangladesh, whoare running hospitals on ships around the coastal areas. We will be establishing safemother houses which will provide locals who do not have access to hospitals at all,

with initial treatment during their pregnancy. Furthermore, we will also be preparing apool of patients and inviting satellite clinics to these sites for treatment and surgerieswhenever they are needed.

    The blessed month of Ramadan,

    aimed to build spirituality or

    God-consciousness amongst

Muslims, is again with us. Behind the

basic rituals of fasting from dawn till

dusk lies the deeper spirit and

    teachings of endurance and giving.

The agenda for this month is to

ensure we spend time in lifting

    ourselves to spiritual heights

    through transforming our life in

    personal behaviour, dealings with

our near and dear ones as well as

    with our neighbours and colleagues

in the wider society – irrespective of

    their background.

This is a great opportunity to build

    better relationships, help one

another in virtue and keep away

from any evils that tempt us. Thecurriculum for holy period is the

    Qur’an, as Allah blessed humanity

by revealing it in this noble month.

As Muslims go into a deep reflective

    and consciousness mood, the

agenda should be to learn more and

build resilience so that one can

    always remain God-conscious. It is

vital to ensure our fasting does not

end up in mere starvation and our

    prayers simple exercise.

Our life in Ramadan must be

    entirely balanced and meet our

    physical, mental, emotional and

spiritual needs. Only then can we

    feel the envelopment of God’s

limitless love within and around us.

I would venture to remind my

Muslim brothers and sisters of our

    obligation towards people surround

    us in Ramadan and beyond,

    especially in our neighbourhoods,

    work places and education

institutions. We all breathe the sameair and enjoy Allah’s provision, we

have similar hopes and concerns for

our safety and security and we share

     AS A COMMUNITY OF

    PURPOSE, IT IS OUR MAIN

    TASK TO WAGE A WAR

     AGAINST OUR COMMON

    ENEMIES – IGNORANCE,

    FEAR AND INACTION. OUR

    WORLD DESPERATELY

    NEEDS A MESSAGE OF

    HOPE TO HEAL OUR

    FRACTURES AND FIGHT

    FOR JUSTICE.

needs a message of hope to heal our fractures

and fight for justice. We desperately need a

spiritual regeneration in a world much centred

on individual fulfilment, material wealth and

short-term gains. We need a strong moral

anchor to navigate through the complexities

and challenges of modern life. Ramadan is the

best time to prepare and practice all this.

As a people of faith we have a unilateral

obligation to work for the good of all. We have

    the obligations of good-neighbourliness, of

being concerned for others, to share their joys

and feel their pains and to provide support and

help wherever we can. We have a religious

obligation to encourage all that is good and

discourage what is harmful, with a sense of

urgency but with patience and wisdom. Let

Ramadan fasting be a catalyst for us to become

    the ‘best community’.

the same land as His slaves and stewards on our

beautiful planet. Our religion teaches us to be a

    force for good to all.

It is vital we build bridges with other people,

    proactively clarify misunderstandings and correct

myths about us. We are a relatively new and young

minority in Britain and we must connect with ourfellow citizens. We have little influence on changing

the negatives abroad - the despotic regimes, rise of

bloodthirsty groups or foreign invasion of Muslim

lands - but we can improve our standard and

dignity where we live. We can reach out to others,

the moral majority, get proactively involved in

broad based community organising and involve our

own youth to project our faith positively.

As a community of purpose, it is our main task to

wage a war against our common enemies –ignorance, fear and inaction. Our world desperately

O you who believe! Fasting isprescribed to you as it was prescribedto those before you, that you may(learn) self-restraint, (Al-Baqarah:183) In this very month Allah(swt)revealed the guidance of mankindand jinn, the last testament, thebook of salvation, the holy Quran. The history says in this month Allahswt granted us many victories overthe transgressors, the battle of Badr

took place in it. Hence, we musthonourRamadan and we must takeall the advantages of it through ouribadah.

The best month in Islamic calendar is undoubtedly Ramadan, we cannot compare this

month with any others. Indeed Ramdhaan can be compared with itself just!

Allah(swt) has not onlyprescribed fasting in Ramadanrather He Almighty has openedall the doors of the blessingsin this holy month. However, all praise and thanks be toAllah(swt) that He has grantedus such an amazing month

for this Ummah to learn self-restraint through fasting asAllah(swt) says in the holyQuran:

    Ramadan and thesignificance of Fasting

If we read the following ahadith of theMessenger of Allah(swt) then we willrealise how significant is Ramadan andhow much we should value it,Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (May Allahbe pleased upon him) said that theProphet (PBUH) said: Whoever fasts in

the month of Ramadan out of sincerefaith, and hoping for a reward fromAllah, then all his previous sins will beforgiven. The Prophet (PBUH) said,"Whoever established prayers on thenight of Qadr out of sincere faith and

Ramadan is a month of the Quran, many Tabee'n would

recite the whole Quran quite few times in it, Imam Malik

(May Allah be Merciful to him) would stop all the lessons

in Masjidun Nabawi rather he devoted himself for the

recitation of the Quran only. Children need to recite

with their parents and we should take them to the localMosques for taraweeh so that we can build a relationship

with the Quran. At least we should finish the whole Quran

    once in this month.

hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven. Sahihal-Bukhari 1901, Book 30, Hadith 11.Prophet (PBUH) said, in Ramadan thegates of heavens are opened and the gates of hell are closed, and every devil ischained up.(Bukhari and Muslim)

Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (PBUH)saidevery (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deedreceiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic,

has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give areward for. Sahih Muslim 1151, book-13, Hadith:213.

We must not be careless in Ramadan , one must not give up fasting without anyvalid reason. So, let us take advantage of this greatness during these few daysand you will soon see abundant blessings, high levels of reward and a very longperiod of rest and relaxation, by the Will of Allah.

    Feeding Iftar

The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged feeding iftar tothe fasting people as the reward is tremendous,Imam Zuhuri (May Allah be Merciful to him) usedto say to him Ramadan means recitation of theQuran and feeding the people.Recitation of the Quran:

Ramadan is a month of the Quran, many Tabee'nwould recite the whole Quran quite few timesin it, Imam Malik (May Allah be Merciful to him)would stop all the lessons in Masjidun Nabawirather he devoted himself for the recitation ofthe Quran only. Children need to recite with theirparents and we should take them to the localMosques for taraweeh so that we can build arelationship with the Quran. At least we shouldfinish the whole Quran once in this month.

    Charity/Sadaqah

Give as much charity as you can: ensure, however, that it is regular and constant as Allahswt likes deeds that are constant. The Prophet (PBUH) would be even morecharitable, and the most charitable, when Jibreel(PBUH) would come to him to teach the Qur’an,he would give like anything. And the hadith says,‘he was even more giving than a rain laden cloudthat takes its rain everywhere, to every part ofthe earth without restraint.(Sahih Bukhari)

I'tikiaf We must try to perform i‘tikaf even if it is onlyfor one day,'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported thatwhen the last ten nights began Allah's Messenger(PBUH) kept awake at night (for prayer anddevotion), wakened his family, and preparedhimself to observe prayer (with more vigour).Sahih Muslim, Book 14, Hadith:Also, the lists of ibdah that can be done inRamadan are performing Umrah, duaa, speciallyat Iftar time, extra salah (nawafeel).

SayeedunaYousuf (Alaihis Salaam) was thebest out of eleven brothers, similarly, Ramadanis the best out of eleven months, hence, mayAllah(swt) grant us all the blessings of thismonth, may He grant us ability to get Closer toHim and to stay away from all evil. Aameen.

Stepney Shahjalal Mosque was established around 1983 by the community eldersand youth in the corner of the Shandy Park in a Caretaker's Hut. Initially there werefacilities to accommodate approximately 40-50 worshippers. In late eighties due tothe increasing demand Tower Hamlets Council granted permission to extend prayer

facilities by installing a portable building. Since then further extensions were builtto accommodate increasing worshippers. By 2002 with the support of communityleaders and worshippers the land for the Mosque was purchased from Tower HamletsCouncil. In 2005 additional portable buildings were installed to accommodateapproximately 800 worshippers inside the Mosque, but approximately 500-700worshippers still pray outside in the park every Jummah and Ramadan come rainor shine. In 2010 full planning permission was granted to build a new Mosque largeenough to accommodate more than 3000 people.

The Mosque is open for 5 time’s daily prayers, Jummah, 2 Eid prayers and Taraweeh in

Ramadan with separate prayer facilities for Women. Other activities include Children'sEvening Madrasha, Weekend Madrasha, Arabic language Classes for adults, Islamic& Social Studies Classes for Women, Supplementary & Homework Support Classes,Weekend Islamic & Social Studies Classes for all and various activities throughout the year.

Alhamdulilah, since last Ramadan work has progressed towards starting thefoundation of the new Mosque (Phase 1). This included appointing more Engineers& Consultants, whom finalised detailed drawings and documents in preparation fortendering. Site for phase 1 has been demolished. We have now appointed a Contractor

who has started work on site. We need a total of £3.5m to £4.0m to complete toMosque. We urgently require minimum £1 Million for the foundation and structuralwork.

"Whoever saved a life, it would be as if they saved the life of all mankind."(Qur'an 5:32)We are an independent non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in the UKin 1984 by a group of concerned postgraduate students. As well as responding to

disasters and emergencies, Islamic Relief promotes sustainable economic and socialdevelopment by working with local communities – regardless of race, religion orgender.

Some interesting facts…1. We are the largest International aid agency in Gaza. We are there, NOW.2. We are accessing more areas than anyone else in war torn Yemen! More than anyMuslim or Non-Muslim charity.3. We are operational in over 30 countries, so it costs less for us to deliver relief, because we have a presence on the ground.4. We go to areas that many charities won’t, like in Baluchistan, Iraq, Yemen and

Helmand.5. And we are deep inside Syria, at the heart of the conflict. We’ve helped over 6.5 million Syrians since the conflict began, providing over £140million of vital relief.

We take your donations seriously. We know this is an Amaanah for which we areaccountable. So when we say “we are on the ground”, we mean it. We’ve gained thetrust of organisations worldwide. This is important because we are able to multiply your donations. Institutions, charitable trusts, governments, corporate enterprises areall multiplying your donations!

In Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Yemen and Niger we’ve multiplied £4.5m that you’ve

donated into a staggering £9.5 Million! SubhanAllah! And that means more people helped and more lives saved. We couldn’t do any of this without you and our wonderful community, so THANKYOU and may Allah SWT reward you for your continued support.Together, we are winning the fight against extreme poverty. Tips Related to the FirstNight of Ramadan

During the first night of Ramadan, Muslims allaround the world wait for the announcementof the month. Start collecting reward from thismoment!

Try to look for the new moon with the family, make the little ones busywith this. However, if the religious authority in your country announces thebeginning of Ramadan and you are still not able to see the new moon, youshould accept the decision without any fuss.

Send greetings to family members and friends. If you live in a non-Muslim

community, try to explain the significance of Ramadan to your neighbours. It is important to explain to them that Ramadan is more than just abstainingfrom eating and drinking.

Share the joy of Ramadan with your children. And don’t refer to the nightof Eid! Kids should feel that the coming of Ramadan is a special event tocelebrate even if they do not fast it yet. Involve them in decorating the house, making lamps using craft work etc.

Do not miss taraweeh: Many people miss the first taraweeh for differentreasons. Some say the first day of Ramadan starts after midnight, so they

don’t attend the prayer, or between the joy and many phone calls, they getexhausted and nod off and some may just forget it!

Keep niyyah:The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (The value of) an action depends onthe intention behind it. A man will be rewarded only for what he intended.Narrated on the authority of Umar b. al-Khattab. [Bukhari].Intention (niyyah) in Islam has immense importance. During the first nightof Ramadan, make a lot of good intentions which Allah will help you fulfill.Examples:

    • Fasting for Allah’s sake• To have a productive month• To attain inner peace• To forgive friends/ family members who have wronged you• To attend the night of Qadr and get its reward• That all efforts in the kitchen during Ramadan is to break the fast offamily members

    How to Plan

    a Schedule forthe Month of

    Ramadan

    Our dear Prophet(peace be upon

him) said: “He whoobserves fastingduring the month ofRamadan with faithwhile seeking itsreward from Allah, will have his past sinsforgiven.” Reportedby Abu Hurairah[Bukhari].

We are now at themost important yearly spiritualexperience ofa Muslim’s life,Ramadan 1437 AH /2016. During these30 continuous days

of rahma (mercy)and maghfira(forgiveness) we havethe privilege of beingheard by Allah at anymoment during theday or night, and tobe given whateverwe ask for! This
