new buildings and free up classes for increased enrolments in 2017. There will be limited access to parking next door during the remainder of the year so please be courteous and aware of the signage.

QURAN COMPETITION

Once again, parents are invited to the 14th Annual Quran Competition on Saturday, 25 June in the Al-Taqwa Multipurpose Hall. It will commence at 11am however guests are invited to arrive earlier in order not to miss the start of the program and avoid interruptions. The categories include Adhan, Khutbah Hifz and Juzu memorisation. I was informed that out of 40 participants, only 3 or 4 have been successful for the finals. It is going to be an interesting competition, and I encourage parents and guardians to attend to support the contestants.

MASJID MARQUEE

On behalf of the Trustees, this is to inform you that the marquee has been set up in front of the Masjid especially for the ladies and children during Ramadan. Sisters will be using the marquee only and no access to the second floor of the Masjid. This area will be reserved for the Brothers to accommodate the increased crowd during Ramadan. Lectures from Imams are being organised by the School Imam which will be announced including Itriqaf/Lailatul Qadr during the Friday Jummah prayer, inshaAllah.

ZAKAH FITR AND EID

Our Masjid will open from 7.00am for the Eid Jummah prayer. Meantime, please note that the Zakah can be received at the Administration Office during the month of Ramadan. The recipients of Zakah come under 8 categories – most deserving are:• Those who are poor and who earn less than half of their basic needs.• Those who are poor and who earn half or more yet less

than what meets all their basic needs.• The Zakah workers who are assigned by the caliph.•The new reverts to Islam whose hearts are to be reconciled.•The slaves who are short in satisfying their contract to get their freedom from their Master.•Those who are unable to pay their debts•The volunteer fighters •The travellers who are unable financially to reach their destination

It is neither permissible nor valid to pay Zakah to other than those eight types of people specifically mentioned in the Quran. That’s why it is not valid to pay Zakah as funding of any charitable project such as building a mosque or the like.

EID DAY JUMMAH PRAYER

During the school holidays all Muslims will be celebrating Eiddul Fitr on 6 July (to be confirmed by the Board of Imams) and will be announced at the Masjid at Terawih prayer. Our Masjid will start the Takbir as usual from 7.00am and we request our Brothers and Sisters follow the carpark attendant’s instructions pertaining to safely parking.

On behalf of the School Council and staff, I take this opportunity to thank all teaching, administration and maintenance staff for this year’s hard work and support. I wish all “Eid Mubarak”, and may you have an enjoyable and restful term break. May the term-break enlighten you the quality time with family and friends, inshaAllah. I look forward to yet another challenging and exciting Term 3. May all our expectations in life be fulfilled.

This Policy is designed to protect the safety and integrity of Al-Taqwa students at all times. The Policy outlines behaviour that Al-Taqwa students are expected to adhere to at all times, including out of school hours and online. Students were provided with both the legal and school policy consequences that their behaviour may result in. Students were informed of how their private, after-school online behaviour can have real life consequences both now and well into the future. Grade 2-3 DepartmentTerm 2 was very busy but exciting with heaps of activities planned. Apart from assembly performances, all students had the opportunity through inquiry, to participate in various excursions, incursions and special sport programs, giving their best efforts. As Ramadan commenced, activities such as class decorations, competitions and class mosque canvas painting enabled students to work collaboratively showcasing their creativity and innovation and most importantly emphasising the importance month of Ramadan.

Thank you to all the Grade 2-3 teachers who have worked so hard to organise these events and parents who attended the performances showing your valuable support. We would also like to thank the Arabic, Religion and Quran Department for organising memorable activities for our students and teachers.

Grade 4 – 6 UpdateA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M P A R E N T S

This month, the grade 4 students went on a team building exercise to Taskworks. Here are a few words from some of our students.

“During the Taskworks excursion we did team building and we got to together and got to know each other. We also worked together as a team. My favourite was Peg Fast, dress ups and Cable Maze. I loved it.”

S A L A M 4 G

“The activities at Taskworks helped me learn that I need to respect my partner and cooperate with him all the time. We even had to work with each other and I needed to say to my partner ‘Touch that one Russel’ so we could finish the task.” Y A Q E E N 4 E

“During our horse riding experience I learnt how to control and ride a horse. We did a lot of fun activities and everyone just forgot about school. I think this wonderful excursion was planned based on the Prophet’s Hadeeth PBUH about teaching your children how to ride a horse, do archery and swim.” A R A K S O N 5 E

“My experience at horse riding was very educational for me. We did many tasks and activities; the three main activities were horse riding, bike riding and archery. In horse riding I learnt to keep my balance and I learnt to cooperate. In archery, I learnt to aim and try my best. Bike riding was easy for me because I have always done it.” A M I R A 5 D

Religion, Arabic & Quran Department PrimaryA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M P A R E N T S A N D S T U D E N T S

On behalf of the Primary Islamic Department, we wish you are gifted with the blessings of Allah and many treasured moments of joy during this Ramadan.

Ramadan has been full of accomplishments, activities and celebrations in the Islamic Department and across the Primary School.

1. Kicking off the Holy month, the Ramadan Food Drive was an absolute success, thanks to the generosity of Al-Taqwa parents and students. Food items were donated across the school for Muslim families in all parts of Melbourne who are underprivileged. These families include both migrants and those who are just doing it tough. We filled 18 large wheelie bins, 13 medium sized bins and two large boxes with the generous amount of food donated by our families, mashaAllah. Needy individuals and families had their food packs delivered during the first week of Ramadan. It was reported to us that when deliveries were made, it was heart wrenching to see the meals the needy families had planned to eat for Iftar that night. We thank you for your generous donations and care towards our brothers and sisters. May Allah provide them with all they need and more inshaAllah.

2. On the first day of Ramadan, Opening Ceremonies announced the welcoming of Ramadan. Each year level created their own Ramadan fanous (lantern) and sang the Ramadan Nasheed for this year. Students also took part in a teacher versus student fun quiz, they listened to a mini talk about the importance of Ramadan and viewed Ramadan at Al-Taqwa clips.

3. Zaky also visited our Foundation to Grade 3 students this year. He showed students the latest Zaky Ramadan video and provided them with cuddles and entertainment which was thoroughly enjoyed. Students were also thrilled to receive Zaky Showbags.

This year, sadaqa donated by Al-Taqwa students towards the Royal Children’s Hospital amounted to $2,880! This beat last year’s donations by more than $1,000! Mrs Assafiri, Mrs Olga and the School Captains visited the Hospital with the substantial cheque on behalf of Al-Taqwa College. School Captains were given a tour of the Hospital’s main facilities and the donation was passed on to help the unwell children, inshAllah.

On 14 June, we were privileged to have 120 students from Point Cook College visit the Al-Taqwa Masjid to learn about Islam during Ramadan. The session with these students was rewarding and positive for all involved. Along with SRC students, teachers from the Islamic Department showed the students through the masjid. After the tour, Mr Abdulshaheed gave a short speech to the students about the Holy month of Ramadan. Ibrahim from 3E also recited the Quran beautifully for the students and gave the athan, mashaAllah. The Point Cook College students asked many questions and were keen to learn all about our religion. It was a great morning and we hope to see them again next year, inshaAllah.

One of the Ramadan in-school events this year was the Ali Gator Book Fair. The Ali Gator Book Fair was held in our school library last week. Students across the primary school were able to browse the collection of Islamic books and resources brought into the school from Islamic Books and Clothing. The turnout of students was fantastic and there were many Islamic games, activities and Islamic based stories, texts for reading and purchasing.

The Annual Quran Competition will take place on Saturday 25 June from 11.00am to 1:30pm. The students and their teachers are working very hard to be ready for this big event. The categories for our primary section this year are as follows: ½ Juzu, 1 Juzu, 2 Juzu, 3 Juzu and 4 Juzu. There will be a Khutba and Adhan Competition as well. We wish our contestants all the success in reaching their potential. All parents are invited to attend and support our students. I would like to thank Sister Hadla Abuzeid and the parent volunteers Mrs Amal Chebib, Mrs Mona Hassan, Mrs Hana Hurruy and Mrs Nuraine Mohammad for donating their time and effort in practising with the students.

In addition to all the Ramadan festivities this term, students conducted their end of semester Performance Tasks and Assessments. Performance Tasks took place in class during week 7 and the end of unit tests took place during week 9. Wishing our students all the best in their results, inshaAllah!

We wish you a wonderful end of term and a blessed Holy month, inshaAllah.

Religion, Arabic & Quran Student FeedbackThe Royal children hospital was an amazing experience. It was also such an honor to be able to represent Al-Taqwa College and to be part of a good cause. I think this is such an awesome hospital because a lot of thought has gone into the facilities they provide to the sick children. H I N D 6 C

On Tuesday 14 of June, the School Captains, the Vice Captions, Ms Olga, Ms Assafri and I, went to the Royal

Children’s Hospital to give money that the students of Al-Taqwa College raised. I really liked the fish tank located at the entrance of the Hospital. Did you know that 140 patients were moved from the old Hospital to the new Hospital in one day? Isn’t that amazing? N A J M A 6 D

My experience to visit the RCH and donate money on behalf of Al-Taqwa College was amazing. The facilities the Hospital provides to entertain the sick children are excellent and that’s what the kids need when they are feeling unwell.E K R A M 5 D

RMIT Presentation and PanelOn Thursday 2 June, RMIT representatives gave an overview about various occupations to our Year 11 and 12 students. They discussed courses offered under each of their faculty, pathways when ATAR is not clearly-in and the advantages of being a University student.

A lot of advice was given regarding subjects, transitioning from school to University, campuses and travel, hopes and achieving dreams. Each presenter spoke about their personal journey. The session was an eye-opener for our students who were eager to study more effectively, to get into the course they want. To conclude the session, a Q&A was offered in a panel setting. A lot of questions were asked by our students especially about an RMIT program that the school is with called SNAP, and courses.

The speakers were; Engineering: Alexandra WareHealth and Medical: Harrison Vu Science: Bethany Green IT: Sarah Longhurst

The aim of the guest speakers was to encourage students to develop a better understanding for different career pathways. The objective was exposure for the students to see as many different careers as possible. Students also got to hear about other people’s personal journeys, experiences and passions for their job. The guest speakers helped build connections between our school and the local community, and offered glimpses of the various realms that students are studying and may one day enter. They had an essential role to play in preparing students for course objectives and career goals.

3 June 2016 Assalamu Alaikum

Re: Notice of NCCDSSD TO ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS In May 2013, all Education Ministers from Commonwealth, state and territory governments endorsed the implementation of a nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability in all Australian schools (government, independent and Catholic). The nationally consistent approach to data collection will provide all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students with disability in schools and the adjustments they are provided to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students. All Australian schools will participate in the NCCD. The information collected by schools for the purposes of the 2016 national data collection will ultimately be provided to the department. This includes, in relation to each student with a disability at a school operated by the approved authority:

• The student’s level of education (i.e. primary or secondary) • Category of disability (i.e. physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional) • The student’s level of adjustment (i.e. support provided within quality differentiated

teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustment). The information will not identify individual students. Privacy of children participating is of paramount importance. Data will be de-identified, i.e. data that does not include any children’s names, ages, addresses or schools, prior to its transfer to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. The collection of this information from states and territories will inform future policy and program planning in relation to students with disability.
