Bible Bowl Competition Guidelines and Rules

Bible Bowl Groups

There will be two age divisions: one for middle school aged students (grades 6-8) and one for high

school students (9-12). The order of participation will be chosen randomly. PLEASE NOTE: PER

THE CHURCH LEADERSHIP, IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT ALL PARTICIPATING

CONGREGATIONS MUST REGISTER A BIBLE BOWL TEAM AND AT LEAST ONE SPELLING

BEE PARTICIPANT IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ATHLETIC EVENTS.

Bible Bowl Rules

All teams must consist of four individuals. If you have one or two players, or if you have extra

players, they will be added to another team, or combined with a congregation who does not

have enough players. Coaches are responsible for making substitutions so that all players get a

chance to participate.

All bible bowl questions will be taken from the New King James (NKJ) version of the bible.

There can be up to 4 teams from each congregation

Team members will sit behind each other linear with eyes facing forward. No other seating

formats are acceptable.

There will be two rounds of oral questioning (enhanced through a projection system)

o The oral stage will consist of teams with a maximum of five players being asked questions

by a question caller.

o Each oral round will have a maximum of 12 questions asked of each team.

o There will be NO ELIMINATION ROUND. All teams will participate in all rounds. The

scores will be totaled following each round, and the placing of each team will be

announced during the closing exercises.

Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their team members. We want to emphasize the

aspects of fellowship and good citizenship. Please instruct teams in the benefits of accepting

victory or defeat graciously. Cooperation and proper behavior are essential to the success and

continuance of this event.

In the oral rounds the audience needs to remain quiet. This will help the children not only to

hear the questions that are asked but also concentrate on them. Your cooperation will help us

stay on schedule. Applause should be held until the end of the round.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams in each age division will be awarded. In addition, specific recognition

will be given to those who get perfect scores (bonus points).

All questions will be taken from:

Acts, Chapters 1 – 10

YOU MUST PROVIDE THE NAME FOR A CONTACT PERSON AT YOUR

CONGREGATION AND EMAIL ADDRESS FOR THAT PERSON IN ORDER TO RECEIVE

THE OFFICIAL BANK OF COMPETITION QUESTIONS. It will be the responsibility of your

team coach(es) to review the bank of questions with your youth. Neither the correct answer nor

multiple choice options will be included.

Once a question is read, it will no longer be used throughout the Bible Bowl Competition.

All questions will be randomly selected by the moderator.

All questions will be multiple choice.

Each question will be read twice; however, answer choices will only be read once.

After the multiple choice selection is given, each participant will be given 20 seconds to think

about the answer. The team will have 20 seconds to render an answer after the caller has finished

with the question.

There will be a timekeeper who will let the caller and judge know when time is up.

No points will be given for incorrect answers.

Coaches and Score Keepers

Each team must have an adult coach.

Each team will be assigned an official score keeper.

The coach and the score keeper will sit side-by-side in front of their team.

The coach and score keeper will both keep track of their scores to ensure no errors are made.

If the score keeper and coach identify a discrepancy with the scoring, they must notify the

judge/moderator immediately by saying “STOP”.

Conduct

While teams are in competition, supporters and observers are asked not to:

Cheer for their teams by applauding

Yell/Holler

Whistle

Stomp their feet

Call out answers in any format

Keep talking to a minimum and at whisper level

Enter and leave the competition area in the middle of a set unless it is truly necessary; If

it is necessary, please do so quietly.

Spelling Bee Competition Guidelines and Rules

PLEASE NOTE: PER THE CHURCH LEADERSHIP, IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT ALL PARTICIPATING

CONGREGATIONS MUST REGISTER A BIBLE BOWL TEAM AND AT LEAST ONE SPELLING BEE

PARTICIPANT IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ATHLETIC EVENTS.

Preparation Guidelines

Please instruct your student to say "hyphen" when spelling a word that has a hyphen (i.e., x-ray

would be spelled "x hyphen r a y").

Please instruct your student to say the word “space” when there is a space in a word that has a

space (i.e., jump rope would be spelled “j u m p space r o p e”).

Encourage your student to pronounce the word he/she is given before and after spelling it so

the judge knows he is finished. (No one will be eliminated, however for failing to pronounce a

word.)

All words for the spelling bee will be taken from the grade level list your student is entered in -

except in the case in which all the words on the list have been used and there is still no winner

or if the judge in the round determines after at least 10 rounds that the remaining contestants

are at a "stalemate." At that point the judge may move to the next higher grade list and use those

words to determine a winner.

Encourage your student to practice standing to spell his words. Competitors will stand when it

is their turn to spell.

At the Spelling Bee

All children will receive a name tag with their name and grade level.

These rules will be reviewed with the group and then room assignments will be made.

When the judge gives the contestant a word, the student should pronounce the word, spell the

word and pronounce it again so the judge knows he/she is finished. If the spelling is correct, the

judge will say "correct." If the spelling in incorrect, the judge will say "incorrect" and spell the

word correctly.

No student will be given the same word as another student except in the final round (see below.)

The student may ask the judge to repeat the word, define it or use it in a sentence.

All judges will be instructed to automatically define or use in a sentence any word that is a

homonym or (most of these are marked with * on the spelling list), or any word that might be

confused with another word.

Having started to spell a word, a student may stop and start over, retracing the spelling from

the beginning. In the retracing there can be no change of letters or their sequence. If there are

changes in the respelling, the word will be counted as a miss.

Upon missing the spelling of 2 words, the student drops out of the contest.

Final Round

When there are only two contestants left in the grade level, the first round of the bee is over and

the elimination procedure changes.

In the final round, when one child misspells a word, the other child spells the same word. If the

second child spells that word correctly, he is then given another word. If the second word is

spelled correctly, the second child is declared the winner. If the second child misspells the

second word, the first child gets a chance to spell that word and then must spell the one after it.

In other words, the winner must spell correctly one word that the runner-up missed, plus

another word directly after spelling the missed word in order to be declared the winner.

Judges decisions in all rounds are final.

Essay Competition Rules

All Spring Olympics participants in elementary, middle and high school students are eligible to enter.

Must be a participant of The NCOC Spring Olympics 2017

The OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM must be filled out completely.

Print or type all information and sign at the bottom of the form.

Each essay should be the original work of the youth who enters.

Essays must be free of plagiarism.

Essay must be postmarked by March 31, 2017 by mail, email or fax.

Essays must be submitted in Standard English, typed on 8 1/2” x 11” white paper, double

spaced, and must be at least one full page. Must not exceed 2 pages.

Entries will be judged by a panel of individuals.

JUDGING CRITERIA to be considered for all entries:

Compliance with the rules

Power of the message of the essay

Clarity of thought

Effective use of Bible scriptures

Spelling, punctuation and grammar

Overall comprehension of the topic

The panel of judges will select 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winner from each age level (elementary, middle

school and high school).

1. Respect all chaperones and adults. No disrespectful attitudes directed toward anyone in authority will be tolerated.

2. Treat each other with total respect. Treat your peers with respect and courtesy (no abusive

language).

3. No public displays of affection such as: kissing, etc. (boys or girls).

4. No profanity.

5. No fighting.

6. Headphones may be worn during free time, but no loud music will be allowed. o No music with explicit language (i.e. cursing, sexual overtones and language generally

Dress Code People look on the outward appearance but “God looks at the heart”. The first phase is not the heart of the verse, but its truth. Youth and adults will base their impression of our ministry on their impression of us. For this reason, we will wear appropriate clothing (I Corinthians 9:19-23). The activity should dictate the type of clothing worn. All of our clothing should be clean, communicating personal discipline and recognition of self-worth, be modest, protecting the reputation and image of the Holy Spirit (1 Timothy 2:9, 1 Corinthians 8:27 and 1 Thessalonians 4:6) and avoid masking our inner qualities (1 Peter 3:1-8).
