Good Foods To Eat!

The collection of songs and poems in the “Raise Your

Voice for Good Food” song book have been gathered through many channels. It is a work in progress and

we welcome contributions. We hope that teachers will find many opportunities to help their children raise

their voices for good food during the course of the school day. Circle time, transition times, literacy

block are all excellent times to include nutrition related songs. Songs can be calming or energizing, so

use your creativity to incorporate them anytime you feel the occasion lends itself to the dramatic effects of

singing!

Sung to the Tune of “Adam’s Family”

Words by Joanne Colosimo

Good foods to eat, (snap fingers twice)

Good foods to eat, (snap, snap)

Good foods to eat, Good foods to eat,

Good foods to eat. (snap, snap)

There’s carrots, corn and broccoli,

Cheese, milk, grapes and spaghetti,

There’s apples and tomatoes,

And then there’s Cheerios.

Good foods to eat, (snap fingers twice)

Good foods to eat, (snap, snap)

Good foods to eat, Good foods to eat,

Good foods to eat. (snap, snap)

Sometimes I eat some candies,

Cake, soda, chips and cookies,

But they don’t keep me healthy,

Don’t give that stuff to ME!

Good foods to eat, (snap fingers twice)

Good foods to eat, (snap, snap)

Good foods to eat, Good foods to eat,

Good foods to eat. (snap, snap)

Good 4 Me!

(To the Tune of “This Old Man”)

Words by Bonnie Hallam

Good 4 Me! Good 4 Me!

I know 4 ways to grow healthy

One! Drink lots of water everyday

I’ll grow up the healthy way!

Good 4 Me! Good 4 Me!

I know 4 ways to grow healthy

Two! Choose 5 fruits and vegetables each day

I’ll grow up the healthy way!

Good 4 Me! Good 4 Me!

I know 4 ways to grow healthy

Three! Buy fresh foods along the way

I’ll grow up the healthy way!

Good 4 Me! Good 4 Me!

I know 4 ways to grow healthy

Four! Grow my vegetables in May

I’ll grow up the healthy way!

Good 4 Me! Good 4 Me!

I’m as healthy as can be!

I can jump and skip and run all day and play

I’ve grown up the healthy way!

I’m a Big Red Apple

(To the Tune of “I’m a Little Tea Pot”)

I’m a big red apple

Juicy and sweet,

I grow on a tree and I’m good to eat.

Put me in a pan and bake me ‘til I’m done.

Eating apples is lots of fun!

Broccoli Song

(To the Tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)

Broccoli, broccoli, green and bright

On my plate, it’s a yummy sight.

A little green tree that’s good to eat,

Steamed or raw, it’s a special treat!

Broccoli, broccoli, green and bright

On my plate it’s a yummy sight.

Broccoli, Broccoli, green and bright

For lunch or dinner, it’s a real delight

When it’s raw, it goes crunch!

When it’s steamed, I eat a bunch.

Broccoli, broccoli, green and bright

On my plate it’s a yummy sight.

The Strawberry Patch

(To the Tune of “Sweet Betsy From Pike”)

The farmer went out to the strawberry patch

Taking his basket, he picked a whole batch.

He brought them home to his good family,

And he saved some strawberries for

you and for me!

Orange, Orange

(To the Tune of “Little Brown Jug”) You can use any round tree fruit and adapt the lyrics to the fruit you choose!

Try the song as Apple, Apple..it works too!

Orange, Orange

Big and round

No better fresh fruit

Can be found

Orange, Orange

Good for me

Growing on the orange tree!

Oranges in the orchards grow

The farmer picks them this I know.

He brings them to the corner store

Then goes out and picks some more.

Orange, Orange

Big and round

No better fresh fruit

Can be found

Orange, Orange,

Good for me

Growing on the orange tree!

Green Peas

(To the Tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)

Green peas in the pod

Cook them till they’re done

Yummy, yummy,

yummy, yummy

Eat ‘em till there’s none.

(Sing as a round)

One, Two Three Tomatoes

(To the Tune of “Ten Little Indians”)

One, two, three red tomatoes

Four, five, six red tomatoes

Seven, eight, nine red tomatoes

Ten red tomatoes growing

Pick up one, put it in the basket

Pick up two, put ‘em in the salad

Pick ‘em all up, put ‘em on the table

And slice them up for dinner

Mother likes fresh tomatoes

Father likes fresh tomatoes

Brother likes fresh tomatoes

I like tomatoes, too. Don’t you?

Out in the Garden

(To the Tune of “La Cucuracha”)

Out in the garden,

Out in the garden,

There are pretty things to see

Out in the garden

Out in the garden

There are lots of things to eat!

Have an apple or a banana

Strawberries taste so good, too

Out in the garden

Out in the garden

Delicious things for me and you!

There is a peach tree And a pear tree

Underneath the sky above

Carrots grow fine

When the sun shines

Bell peppers are friends of mine.

Have an apple or a banana

Strawberries taste so good, too

Out in the garden

Out in the garden

Delicious things for me and you!

Did You Ever Squeeze a Lemon?

(To the Tune of

“Did You Ever See a Lassie?”)

You can replace lemon with other fruits in this song, too. Why

don’t you try kiwi or strawberry!

Did you ever squeeze a lemon

A lemon, a lemon

Did you ever squeeze a lemon

And make lemonade?

Eating a Banana

(To the Tune of “I’ve Been Working On the Railroad”)

While I’m eating a banana

I pull the peel away

While I’m eating a banana

My blues are chased away

In my lunch or on the table

They’re so yummy all the time

While I’m eating a banana

I always feel so fine.

While I’m eating a banana

I feel a healthy glow

While I’m eating a banana

It helps me grow and grow

It’s so full of good things for me

I’ll eat one any time

While I’m eating a banana

I always feel so fine!

Let’s go out there and see it!

An apple tree grows in

Your back yard

Your back yard

Your back yard

An apple tree grows in

Your back yard

And it’s a lovely tree.

I’ll reach right up and pick

One that’s ripe

One that’s ripe

One that’s ripe

I’ll reach right up and pick

One that’s ripe

Just for you and me.

Apples are a

Yummy treat

Apples are a

Yummy treat

That grow in your back yard

"FAVORITE FOOD SONG"

(Sung to the Tune of "Skip to My Lou") We have to eat, so we might as well eat

Some food we think is a special treat,

_______________'s my choice. It can't be beat,

So serve it every Monday

Second time, so serve it every Tuesday and so on.

"BREAKFAST'S READY"

(To the tune of"Are You Sleeping?") Breakfast's ready, breakfast's ready

Sister Sue, Sister Sue.

We are having pancakes.

We are having pancakes

Just for you, Just for you.

Breakfast's ready, breakfast's ready

Brother Bill, Brother Bill.

Oranges, toast, and oatmeal

Oranges, toast, and oatmeal

Eat you fill. Eat your fill.

Come to breakfast. Come to breakfast

On the run. On the run.

"ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT VARIATIONS"

Drink, drink, drink your milk, or eat a piece of cheese.

Yogurt, too, is good for you. Eat any kind you please.

Eat, eat, eat your breakfast happily each day.

Chew your food and chew it well, Lots of pep for play.

Eat, eat, eat good food for Breakfast every day.

If you do, you'll healthy be with lots of pep for play.

Meat, milk, bread, and fruit, vegetables, too,

Eat them every day and you'll be strong and healthy, too.

"IT'S A SMALL WORLD"

Oh, we need to choose what we'll eat each day

So we'll feel our best when we work and play

If you're one who would care,

Then it's time you're aware,

We must eat nutritious food.

Chorus:

Did you eat nutritious food?

Did you eat nutritious food?

If you eat nutritious food,

Then your health will tell.

There is breakfast, lunch and then dinner too,

Skip the candy bar, it's not good for you.

If good health's what you want, and some go

power, too

Then it's time to eat good food.

"VEGETABLE RAP"

Get up in the morning, what's the first

thing you do?

Squeeze a little grapefruit or an

orange or two.

Bananas on your flakes, raisins in

your mush,

Peaches or berries in a yogurt slush.

Slice 'em up, dice 'em up,

Sip 'em up, dip 'em up,

Stew 'em up, chew 'em up, raw! raw! raw!

Does your lunch come in a bag?

Do you eat it on a plate?

Any way it comes, well, carrot sticks are great.

Chomp a bit of celery, salad on the side.

Every little vegetable is waiting to be tried.

You get the call to dinner, don't forget to wash.

You just can't believe it, they're having squash.

Go ahead and try it. you'll like it, you'll see,

Then eat your potatoes and your broccoli.

Last night was cauliflower, tomorrow, will be beets

Utterly amazing the vegetables you eat.

Always try a little bite, if you please,

And if all else fails there's com and peas.

Copyright The Food Trust 2005. Materials developed with support from the Claneil Foundation.

Mash 'em up, smash 'em up,

Steam 'em up, cream 'em up,

Heat 'em up, eat 'em up, raw! raw! raw!

After dinner you're ready for dessert.

Oh, my goodness, it's a cantaloupe alert.

Have a slice of watermelon, mmmmmmm, it's nice.

Take any of the fruits, and juice them over ice.

All day long it really doesn't matter

If you nibble on fruit and a vegetable platter.

They're only going to help you, 'cause they're the best

And now it's time to give this rap a rest.

We have been shown what is best

To help us choose from all the rest

Foods that are red, yellow, orange or green

Colors that can be easily seen

We get to try a snack to see how it is

So that we may become a

“Fruits and Veggies”

I like bananas

And apples too!

I like carrots and corn

How about you?

Fruits and veggies

Are good to eat.

Some are juicy

And some are sweet!

There are oranges,

Grapes, peaches, and cherries

There are pears,

Melons, plums and blueberries.
