Threads and stitches to use Cross Stitch Use a double strand of the colours shown below, and in the key to each chart Backstitch Left hand design: For the backstitched border, use one strand of violet 333. Right hand design: For the rainbow lines either side of the heart use a double strand of the colours shown below. red DMC 321 orange DMC 946 yellow DMC 444 green DMC 700 blue DMC 3843 darker blue DMC 796 violet DMC 333

How to use the chart Print the chart out, so that you can mark the areas you have done. You can do this with a highlighter, or simply with a light pencil mark, in case you want to use the chart more than once. My preference is to put a tick at the side when I’ve completed a row. The arrows at the top and the side, and the crossed red lines show where the centre of the design is. Use these to help you decide where to start stitching. Work your way through the design as you prefer. Generally, my preference is to stitch blocks of colour, working from top to bottom of the block, and stitching paler colours first. Try to avoid carrying bright colours across the back of unstitched areas. For more advice, visit www.nickybrungercrafts.com
