Our 8 Best Parenting Tips for 2015 from http://www.empoweringparents.com/
By Denise Rowden, Empowering Parents Coach Parenting is one job that never takes a holiday vacation. As families are celebrating holidays, parents are also coping with sibling bickering, backtalk, temper tantrums, and power struggles. Here at Empowering Parents, we hear about these struggles every day. The fact that you, as a parent, are willing to reach out and share your challenges and struggles with us speaks volumes about your commitment to building a good life for you and your family. Your job as a parent is to provide your child with the tools and opportunities to be successful. What they do with those tools and opportunities is not something you have control over. Raising children certainly can feel like a thankless job at times. The job can get easier, though, when you learn new parenting skills and reach out for support. So as we move together into the New Year, here are eight tips that we’ve seen make a difference in families’ lives and that we want to share with you. 1. Control what you can: your response. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you by responding with harsh punishments in the moment. The reality is, when you are giving a consequence, it isn’t about how bad it stings or how much you inconvenience your child. It really is about how consistent you are. Being steady, measured and predictable will work even if your child is not demonstrating his or her discomfort in a visible manner. Stay focused on what you do have control over: your response. The wonderful thing about being confident in this process is that you can stay calm and in their corner, which is where you want to be anyway.
2. Walking away is often the best response in the moment. When parents call into our coaching line, they are frequently frustrated and burned out from constant power struggles. The technique we recommend often is setting the limit and walking away. This means not engaging in a power struggle with your child. When you respond this way, you are showing your child you will no longer reinforce negative behavior. By taking some time to cool down and allowing your child to do the same, you are increasing the chance that you will be able to have a calm conversation with your child that’s more effective and productive.
3. Tackle one behavior or issue at a time. When we speak with parents, they’re often focusing on several behavior issues at once. This is understandable. School attendance, grades, chores, arguing and tantrums are all valid reasons for a parent to step in and teach their kids how to meet their responsibilities respectfully and on time. Trying to do it all at once is not an effective way of bringing about behavior change. Most parents and kids just become too overwhelmed with the pressure to improve every part of their lives at once. Giving yourself permission to slow down and focus on a plan to help your child practice better behavior will be more effective in the long run. It will give you and your child a chance to stay grounded and clear about expectations and limits at home and school. 4. Role model the behavior you want to see. Role modeling is a powerful way to influence good behavior. It’s true that kids watch what we do more than they listen to what we say. Even if it doesn’t seem as if you are having any influence at all on your child’s choices, remember that perception is not always reality. If you’re practicing a consistent method of teaching and coaching your child with clear limits, expectations and appropriate consequences and rewards, then you’re providing them with the opportunity to solve their problems more successfully. Remember, your job as a parent is to provide them with the tools and opportunities to be successful. What they do with those tools and opportunities is not something you have control over.

School Counselors http://kidshealth.org/
Counselors Help You Cope
Add school counselors to the list of people you can turn to when you need help. They know how to listen
and can help kids with life's challenges. Counselors have special training in how to help kids solve
problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves.
That doesn't mean your counselor will wave a magic wand and the problem will go away. But it does
mean he or she will help you cope with it. Coping is an important word to know. Sometimes, kids and
grown-ups have difficult problems. Coping means that someone is trying to handle these problems and
make things better.
Your school counselor is available for you and wants to make your school experience the best it can be.
The counselor's job is to take your problem seriously and help you find a solution. The counselor also
wants to help you learn as much as you can in class, be a contributing member of the school community,
and be a positive influence on your environment. A school counselor's job is different from what it was 50
years ago. Today, counselors are called upon to help students in a broader way. They help students
handle almost any problem that could get in the way of learning, guide them to productive futures, and
try to create a positive environment for everyone at school. So if you need a counselor's advice, just ask!
School Counselors teach social skills and character education.

MR. TURNER
9/14/15 – 9/18/15
WELCOME BACK TO P.E. with Mr. Turner!!!!
Whenever your child is in physical education they NEED TO HAVE SNEAKERS
with rubber soles. This is for their safety! Not coming to class prepared will result in
your child being unable to participate and having to complete an alternative
assignment.
I look forward to a great year with your children! I hope they’re ready to work hard!
INTRAMURALS:
Starting on 9/22/15 at 8:00 a.m. there will be intramurals before school for
students in grades 4-6. I need to have a permission slip on file before your
child can participate!
Play…Play…Play… and learning while we play!
This week we learned about the upper case and
lower case letter A. We practiced writing the
letter in the air and on paper while learning the
sound it makes. You can practice with your child
at home! Look for the letter A and a outside of
school too, the more your child sees this letter
the better they will know it! We will be focusing
on the letter A all week while we enjoy many
tasty treats made of apples!
All About Me
We are reading books that are
part of our unit, All About Me. As
a class we are talking about things
that make us special, that are
special in our world, what we can
do by ourselves, and what we
want to do when we get older! In
your child’s folder we are asking
you to help your child bring in
something special in their world.
Make sure to look for it! Read,
Read, Read!

ELA This week we were introduced to the classroom library. Students learned how shop for books, organize them, and use their book boxes. We’ve been practicing our STAMINA for independent reading as well. So far we are up to 5 minutes! **We will be going to the school library on Fridays for book exchange. Please return books the following Friday.***
Math We started our first module this week. All of our lessons start with a fluency activity, followed by a word problem and then the actual lesson. Students are just starting to get the hang of these lessons. We have been working with decomposing numbers into its parts.
Rules/Expectations
We brainstormed some reasons that we come to school. We then read a story about a little boy who makes bad choices in school, called David Goes to School . We decided that we needed some expectations for each other so we are all able to learn.

Skarù:ręɁ Uháheh Mrs. Weinholtz
Welcome back to another year at Tuscarora School.
The floors are shining and the walls have a new coat of paint throughout the school.
Nyá:wę to all of our cleaning staff and student helper Iris Curtis for the terrific look in
our classroom and school.
We have been busy getting to know our classroom or reacquainting ourselves. Third
grade is new to Culture Class therefore we began with a tour of the classroom and an
overview of the curriculum. Fourth grade listened to a beautiful book telling the story
of the ledger drawings from the students of the Carlisle Boarding School. Fifth grade
has been busy creating a cover page mosaic of indigenous images for their yearlong
binder. Sixth grade covered the lesson on the Tuscarora Times covers that they will
be illustrating throughout the year.
Please make sure to stop by the Culture room for Open House Thursday evening.
Fourth grade parents please sign permission slips to view the 500 Nations series this
year at Open House.
What is Corn? This is a question posted on the bulletin board outside the Culture
Classroom. It is a question I am asking of adults in our community to write about for
posting at Open House. All community members are welcome to share their thoughts
and drop off their written response by the end of today. I would like students to see
how people in our community view corn. If you miss the deadline for this evening you
may still drop a note to add for the students.
