Harmful Effects of X-Rays
Why X-Rays Are Harmful
X-rays are high energy electromagnetic rays, which have a strong ability to
ionize air or gas. When X-rays fall on human body they break up the
molecular bonds and produce free radicals.
These free radicals are highly reactive and disturb the proteins, which are vital
to health. Also it damages the cells and sometimes a damaged cell survives and
continues to produce more damaged cells, which results in cancer.
Important:
Even a very low dose of radiation may destroy tissue or initiate tumor
development.

Application of X-Ray Protective Products
Protection against secondary (scattered)
radiation
Products developed for personnel in the field
of radiation
Types of radiation:
- hard radiation > 100 kV (e.g. for bones, lead, plaster)
- soft radiation < 100 kV (e.g. soft tissue, breast tissue)
![Page 5: Radiation Protection](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052900/5563ca32d8b42abe468b4f10/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
X-Ray Protection for Patients and Medical Staff
Radiosensitive Organs
Organs with a high cell division rate are
lymphoid organs, bone marrow, blood, testes, ovaries, intestines
Organs with fairly high radiosensitivity are
skin and other organs with epithelial cell lining (cornea, oral cavity, esophagus,
rectum, bladder, vagina, uterine cervix, ureters)
Organs with moderate radiosensitivity are
optic lens, stomach, growing cartilage, fine vasculature, growing bone
Important:
Patients are exposed to the x-ray extremely briefly, which reduces the impact of
any damage to their bodies. Medical personnel, however, is often exposed to
radiation every day for several hours.

Scattered Radiation
Where does the X-Ray Radiation Come
from?
In addition to primary radiation, there exists a
secondary or scattered radiation.
Scattered radiation originates primarily in the body of
a patient as radiation during its passage through a
substance comes out with a changed direction.
Radiation can also undergo subsequent scattering
from the walls and other objects in the examination
room.

X-Ray Protective Accessories for Eyes
Cataract Risk
Lens of the eye is very sensitive to iodizing
radiation, which can cause permanent damage
Due to that, eyes should be protected from radiation
Risk of cataracts exist
The statutory annual dose limit for eye lenses has been
150 mSv. With the recommendations of April 2011, the
IRCP (International Commission on Radiation Protection)
advised a further dramatic reduction of the limit values:
- annual exposure should not be more than 20 mSv
over a 5 year average
- no annual exposure should exceed 50 mSv

X-Ray Protective Accessories for Eyes
X-Ray Protective Eyewear
MAVIG has designed a new collection to provide a comfortable
fit for a wide range of facial shapes and sizes.
Important: It is the lenses and not the frame that protects the
eye lenses from radiation!
Glasses should sit on the cheekbones to close the space
between face and lenses to protect from radiation coming
from below
Glasses should also press against the temples to protect from
radiation coming from the sides
Glasses should be chosen by each user personally by trying
on different models
