The rising concern about the negative impact on the environment by offshore drilling operations initiated the development of new environmental friendly products in the 1980’s.

Radiagreen® is a range of products which covers now almost every segment of the oil & gas industry from seismic exploration over drilling and completion to the production and transport of oil and gas.

Radiagreen® drilling chemicals are applied in both oil-based mud systems and water based mud systems. Based on ester chemistry, they combine performance and environmental friendliness. Radiagreen® base oils and lubricants significantly reduce friction and wear resulting in high drilling rates and extended tool life in the most challenging circumstances. All Radiagreen® products are derived from natural and renewable resources, they are rapidly biodegradable and present absolutely no danger to marine life nor to the operating crew.

The main process leading to Radiagreen® oilfield chemicals is the esterification of fatty acids. More than 250.000 Tonnes/y of natural fats and oils are converted into a wide range of fatty acids, fatty alcohols and glycerine in our ertvelde plant near Gent. A sizeable share of these basic oleochemicals is shipped to our Oelegem plant east of Antwerp, to combine them with other molecules, using processes such as saponification, esterification, formulation, etc. Throughout the entire production, the greatest care possible is given to keeping intact the ecological and human safety features of our feedstock. Large stocks of Radiagreen®

products are available in Europe, US Gulf of Mexico, Middle East and Far East (Malaysia).

On request, our technical staff will supply more detailed technical information on Radiagreen® products, on the IFP laboratory results and on the experience gained from the various field tests.

The Radiagreen BDMF (Biodegradable Drilling Mud Fluid) base oils are based on Ester chemistry and offer the best environmentally friendly alternative to replace mineral oils in formulated inverted oil base muds. The practical experience gained from many wells confirmed the initial findings of the IFP (French Petroleum Institute). IFP extensively tested the evolution of rheology, the dynamic and static filtration and the general stability of Radiagreen BDMF-based synthetic mud systems in a 10-day simulation (accelerated ageing test) in a high pressure and high temperature loop. Systems based on Radiagreen BDMF base oils exhibit very good drilling fluid performance like excellent penetrations rates and better lubricity properties.Radiagreen BDMF is available in various viscosity grades: Radiagreen BDMF LV, VLV and DW. Both LV and VLV are pure esters, DW is based on a blend of esters and synthetic oil. BDMF LV is used in drilling operations where environmental legislations prohibit the discharge of cuttings contaminated by mineral oil based systems.VLV and DW are used under the same conditions but the low kinematic viscosity allows formulations and applications for Deep Water operations, mainly because the temperature and pressure do not adversely effect the systems viscosity. The low viscosity of VLV and DW allows lower ester/water ratio drilling fluids formulations, thus reducing the overall fluid costs by reducing the amount of base fluid needed and the amount of base fluid lost with cuttings. Radiagreen BMDF base oils reduce the coefficient of friction while drilling with 30 to 40 % compared to traditional mineral base oils. These superior lubricating properties are a key element to reduce Torque and Drag especially while drilling highly deviated or extended reach wells.

Elastomer compatibility used to be a problem in the past when using pure esters. However this problem can easily be overcome by using appropriate elastomers such as Viton or Kalrez. These elastomers show less sensitivity to esters in term of swelling which extends the elastomers life generally and drastically reduces the overall mainten ance on the rigs. Other tests at the IFP have among others, clearly demonstrated that: Radiagreen BDMF-based fluids systems satisfactorily resist to possible contaminations during the drilling process, such as Seawater influx or Solids contamination. Redrilled cement does not modify the characteristics of Radiagreen BDMF-based mud systems. The consequences of accidental contamination of Radiagreen BDMF-based mud systems by cement slurry are similar to the consequences when using mineral oil or synthetic based mud systems.Contamination by cement slurry will increase the rheological properties in proportion with the concentration of contaminant. These properties remain stable after ageing for a contamination of up to 10%. The thickening time of cement slurry in the cases of Radiagreen BDMF-based muds is similar to mineral oil or other synthetic based mud systems. The Radiagreen BDMF range of products was developed after comprehensive testing under actual bottomhole conditions and these tests have shown that Radiagreen BMDF-based fluids systems remain stable after ageing temperature of up to 160°C (320°F).The Radiagreen BDMF base oils range has been fully approved by DTI (UK), SFT (Norway) and meet the new GoM regulations of EPA (US). These results make the Radiagreen BDMF range a particularly attractive solution for operators who want to use OBM where stringent environmental regulations don’t allow the use of conventional invert oil based mud systems. Radiagreen base oils are technically, environmentally and economically a true alternative for cuttings re-injection or shipping back and treatment onshore.

Radiagreen® EBL - Ester Based LubricantOleochemicals are derived from natural oil and fats, a safe feedstock for both man and the environment. Starting from these characteristics and from the excellent lubricity of the hydrocarbon chain of natural oils and fats our drilling additives specialists in close cooperation with the IFP (French Petroleum Institute), have developed Radiagreen® EBL, an environmentally friendly Ester Based Lubricant for drilling operations with water based muds.Radiagreen EBL is readily biodegradable and non toxic. It is developed to enhance drilling rates when drilling with water based muds and reduces torque and drag in many cases between 20% and 50%.As a result of its particular composition, it eliminates bit balling related problems, and vastly reduces the risk of differential sticking. To free the stucked pipe in a differential sticking situation, Radiagreen EBL can be added as a concentrated pill in the drilling fluid and displaced and spotted across the sticking zone.

Radiagreen EBL is readily dispersible in any Water Based Mud (WBM). The use of this lubricant does not affect rheology, nor filtration behaviour nor any other mud properties. In some cases

its addition may even improve the API and HPHT filtration properties.

Improved WBM lubricityImproved lubricity results in torque and drag reduction allowing faster, deeper and highly deviated drilling. Extensive laboratory tests have shown that the addition of Radiagreen EBL reduces the friction factor of water based muds to values as low as those of oil or pseudo-oil based muds. These lab results were confirmed in many field tests, where small additions of EBL (1% to 3% by volume) enabled to drill highly tortuous wells.

The performance of Radiagreen EBL has been demonstrated in field tests in the North Sea, Far East, Europe, USA and Africa. The graph on the next page shows the resulting torque drop after the addition of 2% (v/v) Radiagreen EBL in the 12 1/4” section of an offshore well in Vietnam.

Product CharacteristicsRadiagreen EBL is also effective in high density formulations. An addition of 3%, results in a remarkably lower torque. At temperatures of up to 160°C, Radiagreen EBL remains effective and stable.

Radiagreen EME lubricants are two specific lubricants developped to solve torque and drag problems in highly tortuous or extended reach wells. They are both readily biode-gradable and non toxic. They can also prevent bit balling, increase the rate of penetration, and reduce the risk of differential sticking problems. In such differential sticking situations, Radiagreen EME can be added as a concentrated pill in the drilling fluid and displaced and spotted across the sticking zone to free the stucked pipe.

Radiagreen EME is readily dispersible in any solids-free drill-in fluid or brine. The use of these lubricants does not affect rheology, filtration behaviour nor any other mud property. In some cases its addition may even improve the API and HPHT filtration properties. It forms milky dispersions in the brines. After initial mixing, the lubricant will not separate into an oily layer on top of the mud. If however a brine solution with lubricant must be stored prior to its use, it is recommended to keep the entire lubricant-brine solution under gentle agitation. This new lubricant shows no “greasing” problems and also remains into solution without

“phasing out” which is important when the lubricant-brines solution is in place downhole without circulation.

Wherever possible, a freshly mixed solution will always be preferred. The optimum concentration is 1.5 to 2% by volume in order to get the maximum benefits of the lubricant (see graph). This is based on laboratory results. Effectively depending on the actual well conditions and operational conditions (TVD, Well length, Well inclination, Tortuosity, Tubing size,…); the optimum may be higher in the range of 3 to 3.5% by volume. Those concentrations have to be evaluated on a case by case basis. Generally no extra benefit is expected for concentrations above 3%.

Data Points

The graph shows the reduction in friction coefficient when Radiagreen EME Salt was sub-mited to extensive laboratory testing at Westport laboratory using the M-I HLT Lubricity testing equipment. The lubricant was added to a Low-Solids/ Non-Dispersed fluid and the change of the friction coefficient was measured in Metal-to-Shale, Metal-to-Sandstone and Metal-to-Metal contact surfaces. The optimum was achieved with 2.5% concentration and this reduced the average Coefficient of friction of the base mud by 39%.

EME Salt can be added to the active fluid system either by the hopper or directly into the pits. It is recommended to add the lubricant via a concentrated sweep. In any case, the addition should be done at the lowest shearing condition to avoid excess foaming. During mixing a non-persistent foam may occur on top of the fluid. This foam will however gradually disappear after the addition is finished and the agitation is reduced to its minimum. To effectively reach the desired concentration of EME Salt in the active system, it is recommended to make a 30% v/v mixture of EME Salt in the brines in the slug pit, prior to bleeding at a controlled rate into the active system. When the EME sweep has been formulated, check the pH. If necessary bring it back slowly to the initial pH of the brine. For particular applications, like high Calcium Carbonate content in the drilling fluid or Drill-in Fluids, Radiagreen EME Salt is always recommended instead of EBL. It gives the same lubricity properties while drilling but avoids side problems like greasing out. This well in the Irish Sea was drilled with a Drill-in fluid system. The addition of 1.5% (v/v) Radiagreen EME Salt reduced the wellbore friction by 35% while drilling of the 85° deviated well. This allowed the operator to reach TD without time loss. The same concentration in a seawater completion fluid significantly reduced drag when installing the production liner.

Product CharacteristicsAt temperatures of up to 160°C, Radiagreen EME remains effective and stable.Radiagreen EME current uses are for completion fluids, certain particular drilling fluids or applications like Coiled tubing, Expandable tubulars, Sand screens,…

Radiagreen EBO is a readily biodegradable and non-toxic multipurpose lubricant for water based mud systems. It reduces torque and drag and the potential for differential sticking by reducing the coefficient of friction in the common used water based muds.

It prevents bit balling, increases the rate of penetration, helps you to reduce the mud density and additionally provides extra wellbore stability. In deep water applications, the addition of 10 - 20 % v/v to a low viscous (2-3 cSt) paraffinic base oil will significantly improve the lubricity of the mud.

RADIAGREEN®EBO

Radiagreen EBO is recommended for use in environmen tally sensitive area’s where differential sticking and bit balling are likely. Normal concentrations of Radiagreen EBO range from 3 to 6 % by volume depending on the mud density, desired torque and drag reduction and mud system. Higher concentrations may be needed for pills and special applications. After the initial treatment, periodic treatments should be made to maintain the desired concentration. Radiagreen EBO should be added directly to the mud pit.

Radiagreen EBL and EME lubricants give excellent results and benefits in most water based mudsystems. They are however not suitable to be used in high pH systems since esters hydrolise under these conditions. High pH mud systems (i.e.: Silicate mud) are often used when drilling through highly reactive formations in a sensitive environment with dis charge limitations. Silicate mud system provide optimum inhibition properties, high penetration rates and wellbore stability. But still the lubricity is a major concern due to the nature of this system. Oleon nv in collaboration with IFP (French Petroleum Institute), have developed Radiagreen® SL; a lubricant specifically designed for Silicate mud systems (also suitable in other high pH mud systems; i.e.: K formate muds). It reduces torque and drag and the potential for differential sticking by reducing the coefficient of friction and is readily biodegradable and non-toxic multi-purpose.

Improved WBM lubricityImproved lubricity results in torque and drag reduction allowing faster, deeper and highly deviated drilling. Extensive laboratory tests have shown that the addition of Radiagreen SL reduces the friction factor of Silicate muds and doubles the EP tolerance of a Silicate mud system.

A well Offshore Vietnam was drilled in the 8 1/2” section with a Silicate mud. The addition of 1.5% Radiagreen SL (v/v) reduced the wellbore friction by 15% and up to 36% torque reduction with SL concentration of 4% (v/v) while drilling of the 70° deviated well. This allowed the operator to reach TD without time loss. The graphs show the resulting torque drop after the addition of 1.5% to 4% (v/v) Radiagreen SL.

RADIAGREEN® SL

Radiagreen SL is recommended for use in environmentally sensitive area’s. Normal concen-trations of Radiagreen SL range from 2 to 5% by volume depending on the mud density, desired torque and drag reduction and mud system. After the initial treatment, periodic treatments should be made to maintain the desired concentration.

Reservoir Activator is an environmental friendly water-base fluid additive for drill-in and completion fluids. It is a molecule engineered to easily pass through a drill-in fluid filter cake (external/internal) along with other filtrate components to maximize wellbore productivity and prevent formation damage.

Optimizing a water-base drill-in fluid -With Radiagreen® RA, a water-base drill-in fluid can be designed to stimulate reduction in residual water content in the pore spaces in a similar manner observed with invert emulsion systems.

-In other words, the permeability of a water-wet formation can be increased in the near wellbore zone by reducing the volume of trapped water when contacted by invaded filtrate containing the Radiagreen® RA.

-The presence of Radiagreen® RA in the fluid filtrate induces a strong decrease of brine/oil interfacial tension even at low concentration. This means that during oil back flow, the capillary forces will be considerably reduced thus inducing a higher and easier oil back flow.

-The water-base mud filtrate that classicaly plugs the nearer well bore can be formulated with the Radiagreen® RA so that the wetting phase that would be trapped in fact induces a better mobility of the oil and thus a favourable relative permeability effect.

What does Radiagreen® RA do?-It inhibits the adsorption of the drill-in and completion fluid polymers on the in-situ surface areas of the reservoir.

-It reduces the water saturation level of the formation rock to increase flow area.-It enhances compatibility between the brine filtrate and formation crude.-It reduces the surface tension between filter cake particles, thus enhancing the ease of well-bore clean up during displacement and natural cake “lift-off ” during the onset of production.

-Collectively, these benefits, when used to complement pre-established drill-in fluid design criteria, further increase reservoir productivity in open hole completion applications.

These results confirm that after back-flow, the return permeability of the porous medium is enhanced in presence of Radiagreen® RA. The product is preferentially adsorbed, thus limiting adsorption of the polymers of the mud, preventing plugging of the pores and as a result enhancing the oil permeability.
